Owner description: The superhighway of pre-Civil War America, this marvel of human engineering and labor, built from Albany to Buffalo, opened up America's frontier to the west.

The trail from Buffalo to Lyons is predictably good though with many on-road section still. The best continuous portion is from Lockport to Lyons NY. the trail runs though farm land and small interesting villages generally little shade. We left our car each morning and arranged a ride back to pick it up each evening riding 45-55 miles each day and lodging in charming, convenient B&Bs. We were very lucky with the weather as thunder storms were predicted each day and they happened at night. The people of the towns are welcoming and helpful. we look forward to the trails completion!

We visited the Erie Canal in Fairport today to stroll around the Fairport Canal Days. It was fun as always, and we took our time visiting all the vendor booths, exhibits and food stands. It's a very fun day, if you've never done it before, and this year they improved it by adding even more tables for eating next to the food stands by the canal itself.

Tip - if you don't feel like walking a mile from your parking spot, there are "vendors" with parking lots right next to the festival, although you do have to pay $5.00 to park there. Still, it's worth it rather than walk for five miles! This is a fun day; do your holiday shopping early here!

Industry pollution has been curtailed and largely eliminated, stretches of the canal have been rebuilt to resemble the original, lots of hiking and biking paths, old bridges and locks restored, and it looks beautiful. With a rented Canal Boat or your own watercraft, a leisurely canal trip stopping at quaint (rehabbed) canal towns and other historical or attractive sights and the NY Wine Trail, you can have a vacation trip that rivals a canal trip in France, with the Finger Lakes also to be explored.

Strolling along the Erie Canel is a great place to go to get away from the hussle and bussle of city life. Not that Rochester is all that big of a city but it is still a nice place to go to get away from it all.

We travel to the Victor, New York area often to visit my Mother who lives there. When we can, we bring our two dogs--an English Mastiff and a Frenchie. They LOVE to walk along the towpath. It's fun to see the old Erie Canal, and get a glimpse of history while getting some exercise with your doggie pals!
