We went there looking for Mark Twain's burial site and a few confederate soldiers who are buried there. The office was closed and it was mid day. So, we were left on our own to try and find these sites. We could not find the confederate soldier's burial site but we stopped a maintenance worker to ask where Mark Twain was buried. We got confused since he told us the wrong turn off but we eventually found the little sign at another turn off in the same area that pointed us to the grave site.

Woodlawn National Cemetery's claim to fame is being the final resting place for Samuel Langhorne Clemens, noted author and humorist of the 1800s who wrote under the pen name of Mark Twain.

Signs easily direct visitors to Clemens' family plot shared by his wife and daughters. Historical data on the headstones tell stories of their own merit.

The cemetery itself is a charming place for driving around and noting the very old headstones, some so unique such as one that resembles a tree stump and another that looks like a dollhouse.

This section of the cemetery is very dramatic Viewing the 3000 tombstones of Civil War soldiers, most confederates who died in the nearby prison camp is a sight to see. A real tribute to these men.

Very well maintained and an enjoyable time of site seeing. It was a great historical fieldtrip for our homeschool. The staff was even helpful with questions that we asked. We may go again next year.

Woodlawn is a special place. It definitely will cause you to stop and feel grateful for life and liberty. I think it's prettiest in the fall, the entire area is!
