Our stay at Black Dog Lodge was nothing less than wonderful. Linda and Rick were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The Lodge is decorated extraordinarily better than any others - very, very tastefully done. Breakfasts were amazing and so-well presented. Yum! We enjoyed the pond, decks and the patio. We enjoyed a fire in the chimnea at night - the stars are beautiful here. We, like so many others, did not want to leave. We cannot wait to go back and bring friends. Thanks Rick and Linda - you are very special people!

Had an AWESOME time. If you are thinking of booking some where else, don't. Great people, great property and we had a great time. The grounds are beautiful in the summer and just as depicted on the Black Dog Web site.

We emailed Linda on a Monday evening to book a room for the following night. She was more than helpful and got back to us promptly.

We were all set to stay there Tuesday night. As she doesn't live on the property but lives right next door she met us there and showed us around. Very helpful and even offered to help with our luggage but as we were traveling light there wasn't much to carry.

We had originally booked the Scottish Room but as the ceiling fan wasn't functioning as it should, Linda gave us the larger suite with the double Jacuzzi tub. We had the run of the entire house as we were the only guests that evening. It is the off season in Ellicottville as it is primarily a ski town in the winter. Pretty sleepy place in the summer but a great place to relax.

Breakfast was AWESOME! Didn't need lunch after that. Linda was kind enough to ask if there was anything that we did not want to eat for breakfast.

The towels when it came time to try out that big double Jacuzzi were large and absorbent and if we didn't have enough, there was a decorative basket in the corner of the bathroom with a bunch more folded up.

If you go there in the winter there may be ice on the property and there may be some snow for that matter. In the northern part of the U.S. that tends to happen.

We had an awesome time and this B&B is going to be a hard one to beat.

Don't hesitate to book a visit.

Our stay at the Black Dog Lodge was wonderful. We stayed there from June 6th - 8th 2008; we were in the area for St Bonaventure's Alumni Reunion. We had originally booked the Dog House because we have little ones, but since there were vacancies, Linda, who along with her husband Rick are the proprietors of the b&b, allowed us to upgrade to the Master Suite.

The Master Suite has a kitchen, living room with pullout couch and a table for eating meals, and bedroom with queen bed and futon. The living room and bedroom both have tvs and there are cds and movies available to watch.

Breakfast was banana muffins one morning and a danish the next, along with fresh fruit, yogurt and cereal, coffee, tea, milk and juice. The fridge was also stocked with water and soda and the cabinet was stocked with scotch, though we didn't have an opportunity to imbibe.

The grounds were beautiful. There is a little waterfall among the garden off the patio with fish swimming in the pool of water. It would have been wonderful to sit there and read if we hadn't had a lot to do that weekend. There is also a big pond and a paddle boat to go out on it.

The beautiful spacious bathroom had two sinks, which the kids got a big kick out of. It also had a shower and giant jacuzzi tub, which the kids didn't like too much.

There was a hot tub outside our door, but it was broken, not that we would have used it since the temperature was in the 90s during the weekend. There is no air conditioning and that was tough the first night. There are ceiling fans.

The dogs, Maggie and Mack are wonderful to play with and they are great with kids. Our kids were very sad to say goodbye to them.

Rick and Linda are lovely and completely laid back. They made our stay a delightful one. We hope to be back.

We stayed for one night and although the reviews were extremely positive we found our stay to be fairly mediocre. We had called earlier saying we would be arriving earlier than expected and were told that we woulnd't be able to check in but we can drop off our stuff. That wasn't really offered when we arrived likely because the hosts were no where to be found. In fact, we didn't meet the hosts until the next morning at breakfast.

That evening when we returned from dinner we had to ask other guests to help us with the gas fireplace in our room because there were no instructions and our room was cold. I would have expected some written directions on how to start the fire. There was a thermostat in the room but there was no heating vent so it was useless.

Our biggest concern was driving down the driveway which was a sheet of ice. Once we made our way down (holding our breath) we found even the walkway was covered in ice. We laughed about it but it was serious and dangerous. The other guests were not able to get out of the driveway (they got stuck) and ended up not going out for dinner! We offered them chips to snack on! When we returned from our dinner we decided it would be safer to park up at the top of the hill and walk down. Even the newlywed couple arriving that evening were forced to do the same. Unacceptable in my opinion. A lawsuit waiting to happen.

The breakfast was good but nothing to write home about. Giving each guest one half of an english muffin doesn't cut it for a $200/night fee. My boyfriend doesn't eat eggs so in exchange he was given a couple of pieces of cantalope.

We had two very fancy Christmas towels that barely covered our privates to use as bath towels. As it was my first B&B experience I envisioned big, plush, soft towels, not hard, fancy ones with Christmas embroidery on them.

Linda and Rick were lovely and very welcoming once we met them but I would have expected a greater presence - at the very least I would have wanted them to find out if we are enjoying our stay prior to the last 2 hours of our stay.

Grounds were beautiful.
Beds were comfortable.

All in all we were disappointed but we had a few laughs.

We spent a night at the Lodge in the middle of an early September heat wave. Since the rooms aren't air conditioned it was pretty warm even after the sun went down, That aside it's a great place for a quiet getaway. We spent the afternoon sitting on the porch just idling away the day and visiting with the two dogs.

Had a great dinner at a restaurant recommended by Linda. Since the lodge is outside of town it can be hard to find the driveway in the pitch black night.

Breakfast was excellent and we sat around talking until it was time to carry on our journey.

Next time we'll stay longer and take advantage of having two four footed guides to go walking with, the setting would be spectacular in the fall.

This lodge had great reviews in Trip Advisor, and they were all right on the nose. The place is absolutely lovely. It has the homey feel of a lodge, but the tastefulness, cleanliness and detail of a better bed and breakfast. The hosts are absolutely wonderful, the rooms are spacious and tastefully done, the grounds are spectacular, the food is great....an added bonus are the dogs, Mack and Maggie, they'll happily accompany you on a tour of the many acres around the lodge.
If you go to Ellicottville, the Black Dog is a wonderful treat and retreat.

My husband and I wanted to book a quick getaway for two nights in Ellicottville, New York, which we had driven through a couple years ago. We got online and found the website for the Black Dog Lodge, read a couple reviews, and really liked what we saw. We booked the Lodge only a few days before our trip. The Black Dog was awesome! We arrived on a Saturday evening a little after 5:00 p.m., and were greeted at the door by Rick & Linda, our hosts, who introduced us to two other couples who were staying there also. We all shared a few glasses of wine and great conversation around a beautiful fireplace in "The Gathering Room". My husband and I then drove the five minutes into Ellicottville for a great dinner at Foster's Pub, and returned to our cozy room (The Scottish Room) for a refreshing night's sleep. After a hearty, delicious breakfast, the hubby and I grabbed our walking shoes and took Mac and Maggie (our hosts' black lab dogs), for a nice walk on one of the trails in the adjoining woods on their property. We walked back through an awesome tunnel in the spruce trees! We then spent some time visiting with Rick about the water garden they have in the back of the Lodge. We spent the rest of the day shopping in Ellicottville, then driving over to Franklinville for the Maple Fest. We ate dinner at the Birdwalk Restaurant (about ten minutes from the Black Dog). Upon return to the Black Dog, Linda had a fire prepared for us, which we enjoyed with a bottle of wine we had picked up earlier in the day. Overall, this was an absolutely perfect weekend at a marvelous Bed and Breakfast! We plan to return in the winter to go snoe-shoeing, and again during the summer months to view Linda's flowers! Can't wait to go again!
