“Paradise”
Reviewed August 8, 2007

My boyfriend and I stayed at Kurumba for 7 nights in June. The only word that can describe it - “Paradise”. After much research on the internet we decided on Kurumba due to its 5 star status. We like to be spoilt to luxury accommodation and we certainly weren’t disappointed.

We arrived at Male airport and within minutes we were greeted by a representative who took us to our transfer…a private speed boat. We were given a bottle of water and a cold flannel (much needed after our 11 hour flight). The transfer to the island is roughly 10 mins. There we were greeted by another representative who took us to reception where we were given a cocktail. The moment we arrived on the island we knew we were in for a fantastic holiday.

From reception we were taken to our bungalow. There are no cars on the island, except golf type buggies. Beware! The staff are lethal drivers so hold on tight!! We were given a tour of the island on our way to our bungalow. Even though we were told the island was 70% full, you hardly see anyone, it’s so quiet and peaceful.

We booked an ocean front deluxe bungalow and it was well worth paying that little bit extra. The room was amazing, with a four poster bed, luxury bathroom with outdoor shower (watch out for the lizards) and decked outdoor area. The view was stunning, we were literally steps away from the sea. Gorgeous. The rooms are cleaned thoroughly twice a day and the staff decorate the bed with flowers in the evening. Lovely.

The weather was fantastic, we had read that June wasn’t the best time to visit the Maldives however we had beautiful weather all week. Although it may be cloudy, beware you can still get sunburnt (as I found out!). We had one evening where it rained, unfortunately for us the heavens opened as we left our bungalow to go for dinner. But as always the staff were on hand and within minutes we saw a golf buggie heading our way to collect us!

The staff, in our opinion, are what make Kurumba so special. They treat you like royalty from the moment you arrive. They are always there to help and do everything with a smile, they can’t do enough for you. They keep the resort immaculate and credit should be given to each of them.

We chose to stay on a bed and breakfast basis. As I’m vegetarian we wanted the variety of the 9 restaurants on the island to choose from. The buffet breakfast is outstanding, there is so much choice. For guests staying on a half board basis, the theme for the buffet in the main restaurant changed every evening and we actually went there most nights. There was always plenty of choice for vegetarians. Being chocoholics we particularly enjoyed the desserts! Mmmm! Some reviews say that the food and drink are expensive, but we found the prices very reasonable and the food is top class. The Chinese restaurant, Ming Court, is a must…the best Chinese we have ever had!

There is plenty to do at Kurumba. As a treat we booked the hot stone massage for two – quite expensive but worth it. You get an hour prior to the massage to use the Jacuzzi and steam room. All very relaxing! Feeling more adventurous and energised we hired a two man kayak and went around the island (this is very good if you can master steering it…I didn’t! I left my boyfriend to do the work while I laid back to catch the sun).

All in all the holiday was fantastic and we have lots of happy memories. The crystal clear water of the sea and the white sandy beaches are divine. The staff are amazing and the food is gorgeous. The service we received was outstanding. We haven’t got a bad word to say about our experience at Kurumba. We had high hopes for our holiday, but Kurumba was way beyond our expectations. We are definitely returning next year and we can’t wait!!!

My boyrfriend and I stayed at Kurumba between the 17th and 29th of July. We loved it! We stayed in a deluxe bungalow, number 252, which was one of the numbers I requested by emailing the hotel as we wanted one closest to the beach. We were on the side away from the airport and male, good view. Excellent room, cleaned twice a day. Lovely bathroom, my boyfriend used it but I didn't use the outdoor shower cos there was a lot of shrubbery and i was a bit scared of showering with lizards!
Spent the days lazing on the beach, snorkelling, lazing, and when we could muster up the energy we went kayaking. Very tiring in the midday sun!
We booked in the spa for a double massage, the spa was lovely and the massage was very good, if a little sore! Worth it for a treat!
We also booked the champagne breakfast on our last day, expected just a glass of champagne bur got a bottle, not so good at 10 in the morning, had to go for a lie down after one glass!! It was expensive, but was something you don't do everyday( well I dont!)
Weather was rainy the first two days( was expecting this anyway) but lovely blue skies the rest!
Food excellent. Great choice at the main restaurant. We were half board but ate in the ocean grill and the italian twice. Both were top class.
Service at the hotel was excellent, we tipped most nights, everyone always had a smile for you.
Would definetely return to the maldives and Kurumba but for for our next visit we would like to try another island, a bit further away. The planes flying overhead were obviously quite noticeable but it didn't detract anything from our holiday!

We booked this resort as it was the nearest to Male airport. On the recommendation of our travel agent we took a deluxe bungalow. For two adults, it was ideal. We had a four poster bed and several seats to lounge about in. The bathroom was wonderful - we would both recommend the outdoor shower. The snorkelling was awesome - lots of Nemo fish, reef sharks, sting rays and lots more. The orchid house is well worth a visit and I would recomment the seaweed treatment at the spa.

Javed, who is mentioned in other reviews, is a real treasure. He made up our sun loungers every day and brought them in if it rained (which it did a lot!!!). He brought me flowers every day - which I loved.

The only fault we had (and nothing to do with the resort) was the rain - we were there during monsoon.......enough said except there was very little else to do.

We spent our honeymoon on the beautiful island of kurumba, arriving on 4th June 2007. We had an absolutely fabulous time and believe it or not we only had a couple of rainy days, and we were there in the monsoon season. We stayed in a deluxe bungalow and were told by our Kuoni rep that we could if we wanted have an upgrade to a garden villa, but we decided against this because our room was just so stunning, the views are to die for, especially the view from our bungalow.

The food is fantastic and cannot fault the choice we had. We were staying half board and dinner in the main restaraunt was always full of choice, would definitely recommend eating at the Ocean Grill a la carte diner, the lobster is simply gorgeous. You can look into the sea beneath you and we saw baby sharks and even a ray feeding.

Cannot fault this island at all. We went on an island trip to the capital Male and wouldnt necessarily recommend this, not an awful lot to see and do and plus they escort you round with a local chap, you only get to visit souvenir shops (which are a bit over priced)!

Tried the night fishing but unfortunately the weather let us down and we had to return back to the island without a catch, can honestly say that boat trip was the scariest thing we have ever encountered, when it rains in the Maldives it rains HARD!!!! LOL

All in all had a magical time and would definitely book again, maybe for our years anniversary. If you are flying Monarch can I just recommend that you pay that little extra and get upgraded premium seats its well worth the extra money, if only for all the free drinks you get at both of the airports and throughout the plane journey, after all 10.5 hours is a long time.

Hope you have a fab hol - we're sure you will

We flew in on the 2nd July and spent 2 weeks at the Kurumba. We had a ground floor superior room which was adequate as there were 3 of us. Our daughter slept on a sofa bed. The views were beautiful. We could have upgraded but it would have been to a pool villa (a big jump in price) and none were available. If you have a large family the superior rooms have connecting doors between them.
The rooms are decorated to an extremely high standard, cleaned twice a day and flowers placed everywhere in the evening. We had an outside shower and the bathroom was huge!
We really went for the diving - the diving school is exceptional so helpful and the staff are all friendly - they arranged breakfast on the boat on our last day which was such a lovely thought. Fish, manta rays, wrecks and night dives what more do you need. Book in advance before your trip and you get a discount! Look on the hotel website or through euro divers.
We made loads of friends and are already planning to return next year.

We travelled to Kurumba for a much need holiday the last week in June 07. Flying time from UK (Gatwick) is about 10h. As we were only going to be away for 1 week we selected an island with a short a transfer time as possible from Male airport, 15-30 min by boat. Kurumba is great, the service and the food in the a la carte restaurants was excellent. We selected not to go on the full board option but B&B instead because of the variety of restaurant on the island. We were not disappointed, it cost approx $100 per night for the two of us. Which given the quality of the food and the resort I consider to be exceptionally good value. The room was excellent, as you would expect for a 5* resort, fully air conditioned, modern and comfortable, with an open air bathroom (totally private!) which was great. We had a deluxe room, which was a kind of detached bungalow about 15 meters from the beach on the NW side of the island. Walking around the island I would suggest that if you want to push the boat out you go for a beach side villa. These looked awesome, right of the beach. There are pools but we didn’t use them, instead we lay around on the pristine beach, it was easy to find a private spot between the palm trees near our room. Temperature when we where there was approx 30C with a nice breeze. When we started to roast we’d jump in the sea for a dip, or go snorkelling out to the reef. The sea bed is very gently shelving with a sandy bottom stretching out for about 30 m to the sea defences. Beyond this is the reef with a great variety of fish to watch and then another 15 or so meters the reef wall plummets to the depths. I have read some comment that other visitors consider the sea defences unsightly, but I really did not, and they do provide a lovely enclosed beach area for those that just like to swim. We went diving 4 mornings, the dive school is very efficient, we took our own gear, but obviously you can rent everything you need or even learn. We dived a wreck and did 3 reef dives. The highlight was diving at a Manta Ray cleaning station, we spent about 30 min just watching these 4 meter! rays circling only meters in front of us. One of our best diving experiences ever. There is a water sports school, with everything you would expect . My wife used the SPA, and was very pleased with the pummelling she received by the way of a Thai massage. Kurumba island itself is quite built up (many guest rooms) and given its proximity to Male you can see the main island and boat traffic on the Southern side of the island, I really didn’t consider this a big deal but have read some reviews that were disappointed. I would suggest you ask for a room on the opposite side of the island or else look to a more remote island all together, if that’s your thing. Again, this island was perfect for us, we had a fantastic stay, and I would recommend it to anyone. We met a couple there who return every year, commenting that for quality and price its very hard to beat !

What can we say!! Kurumba is a truly special place.

We have just returned from our honeymoon, we initially went to Sri Lanka for 6 days and then flew onto the Maldives, where we spent 8 days on Kurumba before going onto Dubai.

Of all the places we visited, Kurumba was the most romantic of them all. We stayed in a deluxe beach front bungalow, which was perfect. It was 8 steps from our veranda to the ocean. The outdoor bathroom was a real hit, and the attention to detail was exceptional, we had flowers on our bed, in our bath, on the dressing table and on our day beds, every day. The beach is swept every morning and the room serviced twice daily and a turndown service.

We were on a B&B basis as we wanted to enjoy all the various restaurants in the evening. Our favourite were the Kurumba Mahal (Indian) where the service and fod were amamzing, the Ming Court (Chinese) and the Italian were also particularly good. The Ocean Grill served a wonderful selecton of seafood and our "honeymooners" meal on the beach there was very special, my only complaint over the ocean grill is that the entire terrace and inside is a smoking zone, and most people were smoking, whilst we were eating our meal. As others have said, it is not a cheap place to eat out, we spent £50 - £70 on a single bottle of wine each night, which seemed too expensive, however the food was about £80 - £100 for 2 to have 3 courses, and due to the excellent quality and service seemed appropriate.

We enjoyed the kyak hire from the watersports centre and the sailing. We did the trip to Male, we declined the offer of a guide as it realy is not neceessary, it is a very safe city and very small and easily navigated (lonely planet guide book do a guided walk, it took about 1 hour, we saw loads) others from the resort were given a guide and they were then taken to various "friends" of the guide's shops to be pressured to buy things. As others have said the snorkeling is very good and very safe we saw so many things and the reef sharks were a real pleasure, mainly babies about 1 foot long but when we were kyaking we saw a larger one of abut 5feet within the lagoon, we never felt unsafe though.

My husband did the "Big Game Fishing Trip", this cost $550 (£275) and was a total waste of time and money, he was only alowed to go by himself, and then the 3 boat crew / guides spoke no English and were not interested in showing him anything about the local way of fishing, probably because their knowledge was evidently very basic and they did not even offer him a drink!!! It was basically a 4.5 hour boat trip. We do not reccommend that you do this activity. We did complain to the manager, but he was unable to justify the $550 cost.

The location was great as it is such a short boat ride to Male, the planes did not bother us at all, however, if your looking for a tropical hideaway then the Kurumba is not for you, there are lots of boats around and you never really get that feeling of being on a small island. The weather in June/July was good we only had 1 afternoon of rain, but the sea is still warm!!

The spa was excellent, we had a couples massage, the relaxation room and hydrotherapy pool were lovely. I was disappointed though at the fact that a 10% service charge is added to all treatments, which seems odd that you pay a service charge on an already charged service? But it was worth the money.

Our stay at the Kurumba was truly lovely, and we definatley want to return to the Maldives, however i am confident that other resorts have more to offer and i would therefore not return to the Kurumba, however be asured that it can be reccommended for excellent service, food, rooms and beaches.
