“Wonderful resort island”
Reviewed May 5, 2007

We have just returned from a 10 night stay on Kurumba. This being our second visit to the Maldives (the first was great but our initial accommodation on another island was not up to standard) we where keen to ensure that we had "ticked all the boxes". We had made detailed assessments of our ideal island/accommodation to ensure we would be totally satisfied.

The leg work we went to was certainly justified and Karumba proved to be a tremendous destination.

Tips for future travellers would include:-

- Aim for at least a deluxe beach front bungalow. Well furnished, spacious and certainly provides that extra special touch.
- If you want to avoid views of the islands that make up Male and the airport you need to be on the north side of island, perhaps somewhere around nos 175-225 ish.
- Go on the seaplane excursion. A truly memorable experience!
- Visit Male. Small but for the limited time you will get there its well worth a visit and offers a fascinating insight into one of the Worlds smallest capital cities.

Service, food, accommodation, general facilities, pool, entertainment (varied live music) where all of a very high standard. If you where to be very picky the only faults you could raise would perhaps be:-

- You are very close to the flight path for a small no. of flights each day.
- Proximity to Male (15 min boat ride) could mean that depending on where you are on the island you may have views of container ships in the distance, together with the airport and other industrial type facilities.

We would certainly return there and would gladly recommend it for those people not wishing to be too remote.

We just got back from 2 weeks at Kurumba and had a fantastic time. Yes, it's near the airport and yes you can see the captial Male from the island, but if you can get past that, you will have a fantastic time. You do get used to it!

The food is fantastic we didn't have one meal we were dissapointed with, it's not cheap but it's not extortionate either. We spent about $70 a night without wine. For lunch most days we would get room service delivered, you could pretty much order anything from any of the restaurants so don't feel you have to stick to the somewhat limiting menu in your room.

Room was great. We were in a superior room which is the least expensive but we were thrilled with the space and standard of the room. There didn't seem to be too much difference between our room and the beach bungalows apart from ours were in blocks of 4 and perhaps the views from the beach.

We went principally to dive and weren't dissapointed. We are relatively new to diving so can't comment with too much experience behind us, but we found the school, instructors, boat and equipment to be first class. Most of the dive sites are less than 20mins away by boat which means that most of your day isn't taken up by long boat rides. They normally have 2 dives per day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. We saw some amazing things.

As most people say, if you are looking for the robinson crusoe feeling, then may be this island isn't for you. But, if you want good food, lovely beach, fantastic service and that feeling of luxury, then Kurumba certainly delivered that for us.

We stayed at the Kurumba in February and found the accomodation, service, food to be excellent. You could not fault the resort. A great selection of restaurants, however the food was so good in the half board restaurant we didn't make full use of them. The entertainment was also great, with some excellent bands playing most nights. What we didn't realise was that to get the quick transfer time from the airport, we sacrificed the views. Only one part of the island had a lovely view the rest looked out either onto Male, the airport and some sort of boat stopping point, which looked just like Pearl Harbour. Not quite the paradise we had experience at Bandos a few years ago. Airport noise was also an issue: the travel brochure had not mentioned this. It took a couple of days to get used to. All in all an excellent holiday, just be aware of the location.

We stayed at Kurumba for 10 days in October 2006. The weather was excellent - we had two half days of rain but nothing that affected the overall trip.

Collection by boat from airport as swift and you're checked in within 30 minutes, having had a nice drink and a cold towel. Suitcases are delivered for you and you are driven to room in a golf buggy.

Our superior room was on the first floor and very nice - the outdoor shower is great for rinsing off after swimming and there are lines for drying swimwear. The bathroom is kept immaculately clean and you are providd with both beach and bath towels.

Beds were comfy (all superior rooms have twin beds, not double) and turndown service was cute. The balcony is large and we had a good view of ocean and Male. We did consider upgrading to a deluxe bungalow however the only one free was quite far inland and you had to walk over shrubbery to get to beach, whereas the superior room was 2 seconds from beach.

We stayed on BB which was a good choice - the restaurants are not that expensive compared to London, and choices are excellent, best of all, room service is same price as in the restaurants so you can be very lazy...breakfast is excellent, large choice and proper cooked food available, both full english, pancakes and curry. Pizzas for lunch are a good choice, large enough to share.

The pool is clean and large although a little bit low on sunloungers. The sea's nice and calm due to the somewhat ugly wavebreakers, but you do get used to both them and the sometimes industrial views of Male, and the seaplanes going overhead. I quite enjoyed watching them go by.

We went on several excursions - night fishing is excellent and as it includes next nights dinner, very good value, and catching large curious fish is good fun. The Male trip is not really worth it, sights aren't great, but you do get to go to a supermarket and stock up on chocolate, crisps and softdrinks - good choice on one of your first days. The open reef snorkelling, local island and "deserted island" is good value again as it includes food. The local island is stressfull due to the amount of souvenir sellers, however souvenirs if you want them are VERY cheap - do haggle. The deserted island is nice although has bathrooms and lots of other groups etc. We also saw dolphins on this trip.

We also tried scuba diving which was great, swimming with the reef fish is certainly an experience. Remember this cannot be done within 24 hours of flying.

There is a fully equipped gym, table tennis and tennis courts as well as a second pool at the sports centre - we played tennis, although it is very hot, the pool is abandoned at night (closes at 8) so great for a post sports swim.

All in all, great holiday, would go there again although may try out a more deserted area next time, as Kurumba is rather cosmopolitan. Aqua shoes are a good idea as the corals are sharp and there is some debris in the water occassionally.

My husband and I have just returned from a week at Kurumba and what truly was the most amazing trip we've ever had together. We've visited a number of countries together and the maldives is by far our favourite.

We stayed in a superior room and whilst we had originally intended to upgrade to a different room, once we saw how beautiful our room was we decided not to.

We went bed and breakfast and are very glad that we didn't want to be restricted - the restaurants are fantastic and a meal for two with starters, main course and a pudding to share plus a bottle of wine a water was roughly 140 us dollars. Breakfast was fab with loads of choice too.

Most people seem to snorkle within the shallow waters inside the wall but the best most colourful fish are outside the protected area. I was swimming in this area one day and a 5ft shark came swimming alongside me. You do get lots of baby sharks and stingrays in the shallow bit though.

We went on the sunset cruise and saw lots of dolphins whilst sipping a glass of champagne. The best day of our holiday by far was going on a trip where you catch a seaplane for a 15 minute ride and then a seaplane to a sandbank that is in the middle of the ocean for snorkelling. You then get taken to a island where you have to walk for 5 mins across the shallow ocean to an uninhabited island for a picnic. The day ended with a visit to a local island, which for us was a touching experience as the island was badly damaged by the tsunami and we were both hurt by the tsunami whilst in thailand.

Please don't be put off by the mention of passing boats, planes etc as you will be having too good a time to notice. - enjoy

I just returned with my wife from a 4 day honeymoon trip to Kurumba.

We had a very great time at Kurumba.Pickup at the airport was on time although our flight was late by an hour. We were then taken to the resort and given the Deluxe Bungalow - beach facing as promised. I was really surprised that it looked the same if not better in real than in pictures. Amazing bathroom with an open-air shower. Excellent ocean view from the bedroom.

One thing that stands in Kurumba is the staff. Extremely friendly, helpful. Very fast service from Housekeeping and Reception.

We were on Half Board. One advice to pure vegetarians is to go for BB as the dinner that was served on 2 of the 3 nights was all non-vegetarian. If you love sea-food, meat, go for HB or FB, but vegetarians stick to BB. Restaurants are really good. One really good Indian and an Italian restaurant as well. Drinks were very affordable. The bar and eat-out by the sea was the place to be during noon and the evenings. This place has great ambience. Be it the indoor or outdoor restaurants. Good food.

Spa is great. simply great. Had tons of fun there.

Water sports, Sports center, Dive school, etc All of them have very good helpful staff. The only thing this place does not offer is Jet-skiing. They can take you to a different island if you want to, though a little expensive. The ocean reefs for snokerlling and scuba-diving was good, not great. I am sure there are better reefs than this but since it was my first time it was a great experience.

Kurumba's crowd is very relaxed. You wont see too many people in too many water sports activities. Lots of privacy for honeymooners. We did not see more than 2/3 people at the beach at any point of time.

Deluxe bungalows that are beach facing is a must and worth the money.

The candle-lit dinner menu for vegetarians is not good. We got it customized but didn't help. Didn't matter to us too much.

One big compliant about Kurumba is the noise caused due to air/sea traffic. I sincerely think it is exagerrated when they say it is noisy. I thought the atmosphere was very silent and peaceful. Occasionally you get to hear planes fly by but I doubt you even notice it unless you are being too critical. Probably the only downside is the view from Kurumba. We were taken to other islands on our picnic from which we get to see unobstructed view of the sea with nothing beyond it. From kurumba, you don't get to see that. You will get to Male, airport and a few steam boats in your view all the time. However, from our bungalow we had a clear view but not all parts get that view. This will not stop me from going to Kurumba again. I love that place and will defnly make a visit again.

In short, no complaints whatsoever. Had a fabulous honeymoon.

The Kurumba Maldives is a magnificent island and thoroughly deserves its 5 stars. It is a very romantic place and ideal for honeymoons or a relaxing break. We had an amazing time in august and enjoyed the luxury and beauty the island had to offer. Take a good book as there is not much going on both during the day and at night (there is a karaoke bar though which we frequented!) but there are plenty of excursions you can book. It is quite expensive to eat and drink in the restaurants but i would recommend not paying for full / half board as you will be disappointed to not eat in the a la carte restaurants - they are simply divine.
