The Hunting Inn is a very tranquil retreat for a long weekend. The Inn is beautiful, with quaint décor and staff. A great location with moment walks under tree awnings to the beach, East Hampton Center, a short walk through gardens and a small pond with swans, and other recreational interests. The Palm restaurant at the hotel serves the best summer lobster on Long Island.! It’s a great place to get away, and relax.

My husband and I had scheduled a rare getaway weekend in East Hampton, and as we made our way east we were a little apprehensive. We had just come upon a less than favorable review of the our proposed accomodations posted on this site. And an enormous blizzard was barreling our way. We arrived in East Hampton just as the snow was beginning to fall, turned down East Hampton's beautiful colonial-era main street and easily found the Huntting Inn, a lovely old inn with an empty parking lot!

As it turns out, all the other expected guests had cancelled their reservations for fear of the snow, and we were to spend the next day and a half as the Inn's lone guests. We were quite relieved to find our room to be clean, cozy and charming. The room was small, but the (king size?) bed was fabulously comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean. We did, however, get upgraded to a "better" room when we arrived, so perhaps there are less attractive rooms in the Inn. However, we saw no evidence of the mold, dust, peeling paint and leaking bathroom fixtures reported in the other review. A continental breakfast is served in a lovely room downstairs with a fireplace (next door to the well-known Palm restaurant). (Breakfast our second morning was somewhat sparse, but I assume that was because everyone was snowed in and deliveries weren't being made.)

Don't get me wrong: the Huntting Inn is not a glitzy, spanking new hotel. It is an historic inn, with small rooms and somewhat rickety stairs. (I don't think there is an elevator.) But it is charming and comfortable and the staff went out of their way to welcome us and see to it that we were well taken care of. We did get plenty of snow that weekend and had to leave early to begin our trek back to the city. We would definitely return, perhaps for a long summer weekend. The Inn is very well located--right in the middle of town, but close to the beach.

Such a shame that the historic Hunting Inn seems to be on the decline. I stayed here in October 2004 and was really quite disappointed with the quality of the room decor, TV, and worst of all the bathroom. Peeling paint, mold on the walls, shower fixtures that leaked all over the place, this was the stuff of a $30 dollar motel. I don't think the mattress had been properly cleaned for a while either as the level of dust (and for dust read other peoples skin tissue !) was playing havoc with my allergies.
