New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott
Ranked #4 of 12 Hotels in East Elmhurst
Reviewed August 30, 2008

We booked this hotel online based on location, amenities and price. We wanted a hotel close to the airport and close to transportation to travel into Manhattan everyday, and Yankees stadium. The price was reasonable for this area and comparable to others close to the airport (with the exception of the Crowne Plaza which was much more expensive for the days we were there). There was a bus stop right across the street with connection to the subway. It was very convenient. We purchased Metro day passes for $7.50. Our one issue was that the passes were sold out at the hotel gift shop on 2/3 days that we were there. Recommend that you get there early in the morning or purchase them ahead of time. We had to purchase them from the Crowne Plaza Hotel across the street. The room was very nice and spacious. We had four adults (my husband and 2 older children,19 and 22) stay in one room with 2 double beds. We didn't spend much time in the room anyway. Three of us had a good meal in the bar and used the pool area and fitness room. They had a variety of equipment available. The staff was all very helpful and friendly. We were able to use the shuttle service to take us to a local restaurant that was recommended to us by the staff attendent at the pool. I left an article on the shuttle bus on our return to the airport and after one phone call it was sent to my home in a very timely manner.

We stayed at the Marriott LaGuardia the night before an early morning flight. The hotel is beautiful and well-appointed. Travelers can print their boarding passes in the hotel's lobby. The hotel has two restaurants for diners. We ate at the casual restaurant and had a very good meal. Additionally, the hotel has a gym for guests. We would recommend this hotel to other visitors.

With room and tax costing $410 and Internet at $12.95 more, this was my most expensive night in a regular hotel room away from the downtown area. My king room was clean, comfortable and quiet in the standard Marriott mold. Nothing exceptional. But the staff was pleasant and helpful enough to make me almost forget the steep charges. They accommodated me late in the evening on a weekday even though I had no reservations and they were overbooked by "minus four". Five minutes of discussions and amusing heavu-duty "airline-counter"-like clicking yielded a second floor room at regular room rates. They all seeemed genuinely happy to help me. The hotel provides frequent free shuttles to La Guardia airport. There isn't much to do in the vicinity. If you have some time and want to go to midtown Manhattan without taking the cab, then it's worth investing in a $7.50 one-day transit pass from the hotel snack store. You can hop on the #48 bus, go to the subway stop and take #7 to Times Square. The journey is half the fun!

I was looking for a relatively inexpensive place to stay for a weekend in New York. I normally stay in Manhattan when I go, but anyplace decent was $300/night and up.

I thought about staying in one of the outer boroughs, and perhaps putting up with a longer subway ride. The LaGuardia Marriott seemed like a good choice; near the airport and its transportation, and a reasonable (for New York, anyway, rate)

The hotel runs a shuttle (you call the hotel and request that they pick you up), but it can take a while to get over to your terminal. It's also possible to walk, although the path is not immediately obvious. (it involves a pedestrian bridge over the parkway). The neighborhood seemed ok, just a little too quiet at night to be walking around much in.

You can also pick up buses at the airport: the M60 goes to the subway station in Astoria, then on to Harlem and Columbia University. It takes a while though. Car services (about $40) are also available.

The hotel itself is clean and comfortable, everything in order (except a bathroom door that had swollen a bit and wouldn't close all the way--no biggie). At the desk there's a panel of jacks allowing you to connect your computer, Ipod, etc. to the big digital TV in the room, but I didn't investigate this facility.

There was a medical convention one night I was there, and it was a little noisy, but that was really my only complaint.

My sister and I stayed one night at the property. We arrived from the airport at 12:45 and were allowed to check in early, which was a pleasant surprise since we expected to have to wait until 2:30 or 3:00. Our room contained two double beds and was clean and comfortable. We appreciated the Bath & Body Works shampoo, conditioner, and lotion since we love that brand. The front desk staff was efficient and helpful. The concierge was very knowledgeable about the city and gave us what turned out to be sound advice on how to get around. The breakfast buffet was included in our package, so the next morning, we were in no rush to get down to breakfast. We had plenty of time since breakfast was spread out over a few hours. The buffet was nicely varied and a chef was onsite to prepare fresh omelets and waffles. The dining room staff was quite friendly and courteous. Even though we stated only one night, we had an enjoyable time and would stay at this property again.

Decent hotel, can't really say much about the price since it was a business trip, but the hotel is very clean, very comfortable, and pretty much what you'd expect from a Marriott. There's a small Deli nearby, and a small grocery store a block or two away, but you'll probably need to order room service or get a cab somewhere. Friendly staff, quiet rooms, fairly close to the airport. There's a shuttle to the terminal every 15 to 20 minutes, which is somewhat convenient. Overall a nice hotel.

What was not so pleasant was the reason - an early evening flight cancellation that forced a number of passengers on various airlines to scramble for hotel rooms. I knew what the going rate was before calling and was happy that they did not jack up the price and extort us unfortunate stranded travellers.

Very new, modern, classy rooms. Nice beds, great flat screen TV, ideal location. The bathroom was small but well-equipped. I always wish there were a fridge in any hotel room, but this lack is standard in this class of hotel. I also found the room stuffy, even with the a/c turned as low as it could go.

What I was most impressed with was the friendliness of the staff. After coming from Manhattan and the shuttle ride from hell with an angry driving screaming at his daughter on the phone while coming within an inch of hitting pedestrians and careening off the freeway (not simultaneously, thank God), it was a breath of fresh air to encounter the cheerful hotel shuttle driver, the helpful front desk staff, and the accommodating security person.

I'm not sure why or if one would stay here for a leisure trip, but if you need a hotel in this area, the Marriott is on top of its game.
