“Historic inn with some charm”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

We have stayed many times here and found the charm, some quirks and some issues along the way. But, this time our stay was nice. We tried a room in the guest house and it served us well. The rooms in the main inn are much larger and have a bit more charm and architectural interest, but the rooms in the guest house are a bit quieter. Also know that there is no elevator in the guest house, just one curving staircase to get to the second floor.
All rooms are simply furnished and look nice, but the problem here is always the dim lighting. In the rooms and the bathrooms, there is not much light and that can be bothersome when trying to work or get ready for your day. If that is an issue, ask to see the room before you check in.

Know that you are staying at an historic property and you can overlook some of the faults here. The lovely wood, the unique wallpapers, the stained glass windows are all part of the charm and the reason for spending time here.

Service here is good, not great. When we came here a few years ago the staff seemed happy to have you here and would do whatever they could to make your visit more pleasant. It now seems that they staff the front desk to check you in and out and that is it. Has there been a major change in management? For such a lovely and historic property, there should be pride and a sense of welcoming here that is lacking.

Not quite as charming as I had hoped. Lots of Stickley and Roycroft furniture but the place had some issues:

The entire placed creaked with every step. OK for a while but you feel self conscious if you have to move around your room. You can also hear when folks are also up and about. Especially in the middle of the night.

Lighting in rooms is poor. Period lamp on desk was cute but too small and not enough light. Vestibule and restroom lights too dim.

Bed comfort was fair. Linens were nice and plentiful. High marks for cleanliness!

Got scalded in shower twice by toilet flushes in other rooms. Very odd feature - casement window between restroom and sitting area leftover from when they filled in sleeping porches. Cute detail but made using the commode a bit awkward.

Very nice lobby space with period furnishings but we were unable to use it one evening because there was a wedding reception that took over the lobby, restaurant, and bar - some advance notice of the event would have been appreciated. Walls are a bit thin so we heard the DJ and party go on very late. Also heard an alarm in a vacant room go off at 4am the next night.

Exterior spaces had leftover tables and linens scattered about from previous event - only linens were retrieved when I mentioned something - furniture left in disarray.

Very nice staff working the desk but no one inquired about our stay or comfort at any time during or at checkout.

The devil is in the details folks... Don't let the AAA and Conde Nast plaques fool you... They're not recent...

Overall not a good stay for price charged.

First of all , have to say there is nothing wrong with this hotel. My only caveat that unless you are a real architectural student of the arts or local history buff, the hotel does have some gaps in service and its infrastructure. Customer service at check in was lacking, again not terribly bad just not what you expect from a hotel of this reputation. Similarly with the room, hotel features and restaurant. Again not terribly bad just not what one expects from a well known and respected accomodation.

You aren't renting a room for the night - you are renting a little cottage in the midst of a soundless oasis of reminders of another time and another dream of how life should be led. If you just need a good night's sleep, a soothing bath, a comfy robe - that's a given. But if you want room to stretch out - walk around in - windows that overlook a garden and European architecture - stimulating examples of bygone dreams of a better life - this is the frosting on the cake. I hope you have time to soak it up - you may leave with more than a good nights sleep - you may leave with the idea that you should change the way you live and pursue the things you want or thought you wanted. Isn't this what travel is all about anyway?

Room Tip: Your room will have a name carved into the wooden door - a composer, an artist. Whatever room you g...

We started at Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, Frank Lloyd Write homes in Western Pennsylvania, so adding the Roycroft Inn in East Aurora was a natural. I love this style of furniture so I was in heaven. Elwood Hubbard started this place, and we took a tour of the grounds, hearing about the history was very interesting. The restaurant was amazing. We were in a four room suite: entry, sitting, bedroom, bath and it was worth the few extra dollars for the upgrade.

We saved dining at the Roycroft Inn until our last night in Buffalo and it was a great end to our visit. The greeting and the server were both friendly. From the minute they hand you the menu with it's handmade copper cover you know you are in for a treat. I had a salad with both veggies and fruit plus locally made goat cheese. It was huge! It was also very fresh and the flavors were great together. For my main course I had the scallops with a corn puree and sweet pea risotto. Excellent! No room for dessert. The table is set beautifully and you can relax in the oversized wicker chairs. After dinner we walked through the hotel lobby, bar and other dining room. What a step back in time!

Full disclosure: I really love the Arts & Crafts style (some call it "Craftsman" or "Mission"). So the Roycroft was a true destination for my wife & me. If you're not into the history, and just looking for a modern hotel with amenities like a pool, etc -- this may not be your place. It's a very historic, old inn that has been beautifully restored. Our room was huge! -- a suite, really more like four rooms: sleeping area, huge sitting room, very large bathroom, and another large open space when you entered the room. I think they combined a lot of rooms when they did the restoration, to create these large suites. Service was good, although we really didn't need or ask for anything special. We ate two meals in the restaurant, which is excellent. If you're going to East Aurora to tour the Roycroft campus, this is THEEE place to stay. We did notice that they seem to have a lot of functions, weddings, meetings of local organizations, etc so sometimes there are sections of the restaurant that are closed -- but there are always other sections that are open. We felt the price for lodging was very reasonable, considering the historic nature of the place. Highly recommended if you're looking for the historic-old-inn experience!

Room Tip: We were in the "newest" section (which is still about 100 years old!), the large building...
