“Worthy one day trip from Krakow”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Experience one of its kind really. The painted houses of Zalipie have much to offer if you give it enough credit and stay for a few hours. The museum, church, farms, even dog kennels are painted with local motives. That makes this place amazing, unique and a very pleasant experience at the same time.

You will be able to get into some of the houses as well, some of them are painted inside. Ever seen a flowery hand-painted bathroom? Say longer, look around, talk to the people and they will let you peek inside.

Highly recommended as a day trip from Krakow.

“Zalipe is Unique and Gorgeous”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

Zalipe is a very interesting village with wooden houses painted traditionally by local artists.

People in the countryside used to cook on stoves from which smoke escaped though a hole in the ceiling. Women whitened the smoke-darkened rooms spotting the sooty ceiling and walls with whitewash. At the turn of the century and modern stoves, the procedure of ornamentation became the inspiration of a new interior decoration. Instead of spots, women began to paint flower motifs on walls and on paper. This talent led to folk art painting competitions and to this day there is an annual competition immediately following Corpus Christi.

There is a museum farm and a delightful village full of painted houses, barns and everything you can imagine. We were lucky enough to find a woman in the process of painting her barn with bright colored flowers!

This town is located northwest of Dabrowa Tarnowska and well worth the visit! The pottery in the museum is beautiful and are great gifts or to keep for yourself.
