“Excellent place for a summer vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2010

A friend who grew up in lake george area suggested our family of 4 (kids 8 and 11) try Canoe Island and we were happy we did. The rooms are not fancy at all, but big enough, comfortable and were cleaned each day. The layout of the resort is such that the kids can safely go off on their own with their friends to play games, swim, or attend one of the many scheduled activities put on by the resort. Food was better than expected, good variety each night, and the BBQ on the island was a real treat. Fishing in lake george was awesome...lot's of bass to catch and even good fishing right off of the Canoe Island docks where my son and I spent many hours. Staff was excellent from the activities director, management, boat team, etc..and we received smiles and a 'how can I help make your stay great' attitude. In a nutshell a great place to spend a classic summer vacation with so much outdoor activity, swimming, sailing, tubing, relaxing by the water that our kids never once asked about going to the water park, arcade, etc...Liked it so much we are going back same week next year. Oh ya...if you golf be sure to play Top of the World...fine course, great views of lake george and short $ for 18 holes.

I cannot say enough about Canoe Island Lodge as a family vacation destination. It is a perfect place to relax and spend quality time with your family. I have been coming here with my family for many years and even though I have extensively traveled the US and Europe, there is just something special about this place.

Breakfast and dinner are included in the nightly rates, and there is lunch available for purchase on the windjammer (deck above the boathouse). There is a BBQ dinner on the island one night and a breakfast there one morning (BBQ pancakes are the BEST!) The food is not gourmet but it is good. You really don't have to leave the place - which is why I love it! Of course, Lake George Village and Bolton Landing are nearby and there is plenty to do and eat if you choose to venture out.

The rooms are clean and every year the owners make sure to do projects around the property so there is always something new and updates being made.

Most days we go to the private island owned by the lodge, go out for a sail with the friendly and skilled boat/water staff. play tennis. One other thing that is really nice about it is that there are many families with children so it's a nice place for your kids to meet other kids and as an adult who started coming here as a child, I can say that the friendships I have made here have lasted a lifetime.

We stayed (my husband & I) at CIL for the 2nd year in a row during their September Oktoberfest weekend. It is the only time we are able to get away together without our 2 young children, so we really look forward to this weekend every year. Like our previous visit, our room was very clean and spacious. We stayed in one of the mini-chalets right on the lake. Our sister and brother-in-law stayed in the other chalet next door and we were able to have the privacy barrier removed on the deck so we had a huge deck for the 4 of us. When we first mentioned it to the staff, they showed up to our room almost immediately and helped us. The owners are so helpful and friendly as is all the staff. Staying here is really like coming home! Although the weather wasn't great (rainy), we took a fun pontoon boat ride and our guide showed us the sights, thank you Tom! Also went sailing again with our friend Joseph. Food was great, wait staff will accomodate your requests if able to do so. The dining room is beautiful and homey. We also like just hanging out in the main lodge-and the bar.
Would love to visit in the summer with our children, but it is a bit pricey. Not that it isn't worth it!
We will definetly be back in September!!

We stayed at CIL for our second time and first full week at the Lodge this past July with extended family in multiple units. Three words to describe out trip: super, super and super. We all wished that we could've extended our trip another week. Staff was super friendly and accomodating as were the owners when we ran into them which was quite often. They run a tight ship there and it shows. As all the waterfront activities are included in the price of the room, as well as dinner and breakfast, it means you don't have to worry about anything except for making it to the dining hall in time. The 2 hour window for breakfast and dinner is more than enough. We're looking forward to another trip to CIL!

Like 80% of the guests at Canoe Island lodge, I'm a "repeater." My family has been staying at CIL for over the 30 years, always the same week every year. You don't find places like Canoe Island too often anymore...so if you have the chance, definitely take advantage of staying here.

What makes it great for families is that you can arrive, park your car, and never have to move it again until you leave. That's because two meals a day are included (breakfast and dinner) and lunch is available a la carte on the property as well. (If you stay off season, all three meals are included!)

Secondly, there's plenty to do - for kids and parents alike. Play on the beach, catch some sun, let the waterfront staff teach you how to water ski or let them take you sailing on the 30 foot custom made sailboats. Or they'll take you for a shoreline cruise. Want to really get away? They waterfront staff can take you over to the private island owned by the resort for an hour or two or for the whole day - there's a beach there and the water is very shallow for quite a ways out.

There's also an activities director who will do things like scavenger hunts, sandcastle contests, and arts and crafts with your kids. There's a ping pong table, tennis, and basketball courts as well.

Dinners are four courses, served family style in the main lodge - a beautiful place overlooking the lake. Bring your appetite. They ring the bell for dinner at 6, but you can wander in at your leisure (within reason) after enjoying a drink at the bar or on the porch.

And Thursday nights they bring all the guests out to the private island for a BBQ - complete with red and white checked table cloths, picnic table, BBQ chicken, steak, corn-on-the cob and lots of salads.

Breakfast: eggs, bacon, cereal, oatmeal, french toast - whatever you want. That lady that commented about not knowing about the waffles - um, I've been going for 30 years and they've never had waffles.

The meals are good, the food is plentiful. And most of us order more than one dessert:)

The rooms: all have A/C and televisions (though I can't remember the last time I ever turned on the TV while at CIL....) and there are a variety of accommodations for every size family and price range. Obviously if you want a lake view, you'll pay a little more. Wherever you stay, you're not far from the beach or the main lodge where breakfast and dinner are served.

You can't go wrong with this place - unless you're looking for a Hilton or 5 star post resort, in which case we don't want you here anyway.

There are at least 10 families that come the same week as we do and we've been friends for 30 years simply by seeing each other at CIL every year.

I highly recommend this place.

This lodge has a lot of potential. It is very run down. For the price it should have been nicer. Food is mediocre.
