“Best place on Lake George for Families”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2009

Like 80% of the guests at Canoe Island lodge, I'm a "repeater." My family has been staying at CIL for over the 30 years, always the same week every year. You don't find places like Canoe Island too often anymore...so if you have the chance, definitely take advantage of staying here.

What makes it great for families is that you can arrive, park your car, and never have to move it again until you leave. That's because two meals a day are included (breakfast and dinner) and lunch is available a la carte on the property as well. (If you stay off season, all three meals are included!)

Secondly, there's plenty to do - for kids and parents alike. Play on the beach, catch some sun, let the waterfront staff teach you how to water ski or let them take you sailing on the 30 foot custom made sailboats. Or they'll take you for a shoreline cruise. Want to really get away? They waterfront staff can take you over to the private island owned by the resort for an hour or two or for the whole day - there's a beach there and the water is very shallow for quite a ways out.

There's also an activities director who will do things like scavenger hunts, sandcastle contests, and arts and crafts with your kids. There's a ping pong table, tennis, and basketball courts as well.

Dinners are four courses, served family style in the main lodge - a beautiful place overlooking the lake. Bring your appetite. They ring the bell for dinner at 6, but you can wander in at your leisure (within reason) after enjoying a drink at the bar or on the porch.

And Thursday nights they bring all the guests out to the private island for a BBQ - complete with red and white checked table cloths, picnic table, BBQ chicken, steak, corn-on-the cob and lots of salads.

Breakfast: eggs, bacon, cereal, oatmeal, french toast - whatever you want. That lady that commented about not knowing about the waffles - um, I've been going for 30 years and they've never had waffles.

The meals are good, the food is plentiful. And most of us order more than one dessert:)

The rooms: all have A/C and televisions (though I can't remember the last time I ever turned on the TV while at CIL....) and there are a variety of accommodations for every size family and price range. Obviously if you want a lake view, you'll pay a little more. Wherever you stay, you're not far from the beach or the main lodge where breakfast and dinner are served.

You can't go wrong with this place - unless you're looking for a Hilton or 5 star post resort, in which case we don't want you here anyway.

There are at least 10 families that come the same week as we do and we've been friends for 30 years simply by seeing each other at CIL every year.

I highly recommend this place.

This lodge has a lot of potential. It is very run down. For the price it should have been nicer. Food is mediocre.

We returned from our week stay at Canoe Island Lodge last week and our stay was outstanding. CIL met and in some aspects exceeeded our expectations. Our accomodations were spacious for our family of 5 (me, husband, kids 10, 8 and 5) We had a big bedroom with a king bed and large closet. The living or sitting room consisted of 2 daybeds and a rollaway bed, with room to spare. We also had a full kitchecn area which was nice for snacks and drinks. Our stay included a full breakfast and dinner, with 3 choices for adults and 2 for children for dinner each day. If you've got kids with healthy appetites, they can also choose the adult entree. The food was good, and personally, a great choice for our family. The dining room is large and it is right there. Every evening we would leave the lake, shower, and walk over to dinner. No getting in the car and finding a resturant. A huge plus with children. CIL is a great value when you factor in not having to dine out each day. Our room was spotless and the cleaning crew did a great job each day. Our waitress Kelsy was a happy and friendly college student who my children absolutely adored. She was always upbeat and showed a real interest in getting to know my kids. The property itself is beautiful with great views of the lake. It has been run and owned by the same family for many years (2nd generation now) and has a very interesting history. Ask to see the dvd narrated by the original owner Bill Busch. Quite an amazing fellow. The boat boys are also very friendly and accomodating. We had a blast tubing and waterskiing and Henry did an amazing job getting my novice children up and skiing in no time. Canoe Island, the private island , is a hidden treasure. The beach is calm and beatiful and so private. The water was warm and the kids can wade out for quite a distance. The week we went, about 80% of the guests were repeats and most knew each other from prior years. Most of them went out of their way to be friendly to us. We had a minor mishap at the beginning of the week. My son sprained his foot on the island playing capture the flag. The boat boy took us back to the Lodge and told us Tom was a paramedic. It turned out that Tom was the owner. He couldn't have been nicer and more helpful to us. We had a long conversation about CIL and got some of the history of the place. Needless to say, it is a perfect place for familes with children. We actually got to relax on a family vacation with 3 young children. The kids felt at home and had the freedom to run around and play with their new found friends. There is an activities director who plans various activities throughout the day for the children. We all loved it and are planning on going back next year. This place is a gem.

My eight-year-old daughter and I stayed at Canoe Island Lodge for four nights during the last week of June ‘07. We arrived on Tuesday afternoon and parked the car. (This is key.)

Accommodations for most guests were cabins or suites located around the property. Since it was only the two of us, we were in a hotel style room upstairs in the main lodge. The room had a king and a twin bed, a recliner, [cable] television, and a mini-fridge. It was very hot when we checked in, but the air conditioning was sufficient. The bathroom looked new. It only had a shower stall, which was fine for us but might be an issue for a toddler. The room was spotless and stayed that way… housekeeping was good.

The resort is built on a hill which is neat because you get a great view from all the patios and decks, but it will also make you think twice about walking back from the water to your room for something you forgot. The waterfront has a good layout with two floats and a typical Lake George sandy beach.

Also at the waterfront is the boathouse with two pontoon boats and a ski boat. The pontoon boats are used to take guests to the sailboats and to Canoe Island. There was no schedule, you simply asked one of the “boat boys” to take you skiing or sailing. When my daughter wanted to go tubing and someone was ahead of her, they came to get us on the beach when it was our turn. I went sailing twice, and she went tubing three times. A row boat and canoes were also there for guest use.

Each morning after breakfast they offered an arts and crafts activity for the kids, and then something in the afternoon at the waterfront. Like the boat boys, the activity director (Kelsey), was there to do what the kids wanted. She organized a belly flop/cannonball contest, and a hide-and-seek game using the entire island.

It was possible to fill a day here and go to bed tired. We only left the property once to go horseback riding.

They serve full American style breakfasts, and there was a basket of baked goods on our table each morning. Lunch was included during this week and they provided a buffet three days and a pizza bar the third. We ate light for lunch.

Dinner is getting short changed in other reviews. With the exception of the Thursday evening barbeque, dinner includes soup, salad and desert. The first night I had pork chops braised in apple cider which was excellent, but I noticed plate after plate of fish and chips being served they also looked and smelled great. The tomato/basil bisque was very good.

The next evening they offered roast beef, salmon, or spaghetti and meatballs. Each night they had options for kids.

The last evening the choices were Yankee pot roast, snapper, or ravioli in vodka sauce. The chef changed to a traditional spinach salad with bacon and hard boiled eggs instead of a tossed salad, and the New England clam chowder is worth mentioning. Everything we had was restaurant quality, and we didn’t have to get in the car to find a place to eat.

On Thursday afternoon the boat boys made several trips loading up the boats for dinner on Canoe Island, later more staff went to the Island. By the time we headed over at six, they have everything set up and the wait staff was ready to serve a terrific summer spread of ribs, chicken, corn, brownies… Just perfect.

It didn't hurt that this was exactly the type of trip I was looking for. My daughter had fun and made friends while I got to do some sailing and snorkeling. Finally, I can’t write enough nice things about the staff.

We stayed here last summer for a week. We were very disappointed with our room and everything overall, for the prices charged. When we arrived we advised the owners that our ceiling fan did not work. No one came by until the next day and they could not fix it and did not provide a room fan for the whold week although we were promised one. A band plays until after 11 pm within earshot of rooms some nights. We asked if they could lower it after 10 pm and the owners said "NO, they play until 11 pm". I guess they cater more to adults. Our children couldn't sleep between the noise and the heat (no a/c either). The beach area was small, muddy and always too crowded to get a chair. No pool. Guests draped their towels over them to claim them for the week. The watersports (extra charge) were difficult to get to do, long lines (over an hour) and then short 5 minute rides (tubing, waterskiing). The food was average at best and it was a long wait for it at breakfast and dinner. We were never told there were waffles or pancakes for the kids- so they were having just cereal each morning. We noticed on the last day that they were served if you specifically asked- they were not on menu. They pressure guest to leave big tips for their staff. There are much nicer and less expensive places to stay in Lake George than this one.

Our family has lived on Lake George for 55 years, and we are neighbors of Canoe Island Lodge. I frequently scan Tripadvisor for properties that I am familiar with, just to see how much the reviews compare with my own opinions (almost always in agreement!) I was surprise to see only one review of CIL. This place is a treasure - it is like visiting good friends in the Adirondacks who will cook for you, plan oodles of activities and provide for all sorts of watersports. It's not posh - but what lodge in the Adirondacks should be?! It is very comfortable and clean, with terrific family-styled meals. The owners (now 2nd generation) are top-notch and held in very high esteem in the region.
