We stayed at Johannas' Motel for a couple of nights over the Labor Day weekend. If a small motel right on the highway is your thing, then you are in luck. Johannas has about a dozen rooms or so with one long building with rooms front and back and then a second row behind the first with several rooms. The rooms are very basically furnished with a decent bed, a chair, tiny TV and bed side table and a table to put your bag on. The bathroom was good size with a shower. The overall decor was minimalist and cheap but CLEAN and not at all run down. Nothing was broken, the paint was nice and the furnishings were adequate. The bathroom was very clean and the whole operation seemed to say "clean and cheap". Now cheap is a relative thing and $75 for a basic hotel on the highway would not be cheap in most of the country, but here in the beautiful hill country of NY/CT that is the going rate. My only caution is that there is a lot of noise from traffic on the highway. If traffic noise doesn't bother you then you are all set. And as previous reviewers have mentioned (and as you will be reminded when you make the reservation) this is a strictly cash business.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the back.

This certainly wasn't a bad place to stay. It has decent beds, cable TV, a sofa and armchair to sit and watch the TV. The second bed seems a bit of an afterthought, but it all still fit. They have microwave and fridge available if you ask for it. But, cell phones have difficulty getting any reception (however, it goes along with the area, they simply are lots of ills and not too many towers). It also seemed that I struggled to find an available outlet, everything had a light or appliance in it (but you don't have too much use for a laptop either, since there is no internet). As mentioned elsewhere, the walls are a bit on the thin side as well. With all of this, I would stay again.

I stayed 2 nights at Johanna's and was content. The caveats are 1) you pay in cash, they don't handle credit cards 2) there's no land phone and the cell coverage is very bad. I also could have used a full length mirror and an alarm clock. A storm took out power and water (well pump), but the owners worked through the night getting it back on for my lovely morning hot-water shower. The owners are sweet and very helpful. This is a fine hotel at a good price, but be aware of the caveats. (The walls are also a bit thin - lovers be forewarned). I loved the big bathroom!

The Johanna Motel is a gem! We attended SwineStock -a pig roast in Pine Plains. There's not many motels in the area. Most people camped out. But we made reservations 1 month in advance with Angela and "Motel Bob". We had a great time. The small motel (11 units) is comfortable and clean. Everything is updated and is in working order. We had room 16 which was fine.

Hello..
We stayed at Johanna's and had a great time. When I say our overall experience was excellent ... it was not the posh that I am referring to. It was the extremely comfy bed and the cleanliness along with a spacious and clean bathroom. And I do mean clean room and bath. The Owners are gracious and run a Private Bar area in the motel. We had time to have a drink and shared some time with them and a couple of thier guests. It was really fun with real Copake Flavor. We have been visiting Copake for years and have never had to make lodging arrangements. The Motel is conveniently located and is a sweet place to stay. It was quiet and the bed was so comfy we overslept. No one knocking on the door that it was time we leave. No clocks or phones, which was actually nice. Just a little sound of the TV and the Air conditioner and it was time to be on the road. And great brewed coffee, breakfast sandwiches and gas within a stone throw. So give it a try ! Rely on the Johanna for a clean, fairly large room at a good price. Where most of the hotels and B&B's in this picturesque area charge more than twice as much, the Johanna offers a bargain. As in most of the area hotels, there are no phones in the rooms, and cellular service is spotty. Free HBO. An added benefit is the bar area where you can have a beer before bed. There's a country band on weekend nights which might keep you up if you're located near the bar (It's never bothered me). The motel is less than two miles from the unspoiled village of Copake, which has a great diner.
