Reviewed October 23, 2013

We did the "Bed & Brew" package, and had a great time. The inn was beautiful during October, well maintained, and the owners were super nice. Everything in Cooperstown is within walking distance. In addition to the standard stops around town, be sure to check out the new Cooperstown Distillery.

Dear JJKQS,

We’ve passed your compliments about the Bed & Brew weekend package on to the staff at Ommegang. We are all so very happy that you enjoyed this special VIP package. And, you arrived in town just in time to experience one of Cooperstown’s newest attractions – the Cooperstown Distillery! Thanks for writing about that as well. We’ve just launched a new VIP weekend package with the distillery (more details on our website) and hope you might return to enjoy that as well.

Thanks again,

The inn is not luxurious but it is comfortable and centrally located with a staff that is welcoming and informative. Our room was a bit of a disappointment, being on the small side and facing the parking lot. We expected a little better for the price. We were also not thrilled with the included breakfast which featured a baked egg dish each day. Nevertheless, our stay at the inn was enjoyable.

Cooperstown itself is a quaint town, with a downtown section that you can walk in about 5 minutes. The Baseball Hall of Fame is fascinating and the surrounding countryside stunning.

Dear TuttyNYC,

Thanks so very much for staying at The Inn at Cooperstown on your recent trip to Cooperstown. And, thank you for your compliments on our staff and the comfort level of the inn. Our historic hotel has 18 guest rooms which fall into several different categories. While all of the rooms are individually decorated and each lovely in and of it's own right, our premium suite or our luxury suite might have been a better match if you were looking for something on the higher end.

When the hotel is at it's maximum guest capacity, which it has been for the summer and most of the fall, we serve 40-42 people for breakfast. To accommodate the wide variety of tastes and diets, we have found our expanded continental breakfast works best for most of our guests. The morning breakfast buffets contain a hot egg entree which varies from day to day as well as fresh fruit salad, yogurt, granola, cereals and two types of artisanal bread for toasting. In addition, two types of homemade muffins, which also vary daily, are delivered warm to each diner's table. Locally roasted, gourmet coffee, Tazo teas, as well as an assortment of juices round out the breakfast service.

Thanks again for staying with us and for taking the time to write a review.

Sincerely,
Sherrie and Marc

We booked the "Ultimate Baseball Experience" with the Inn at Cooperstown for our 35th Anniversary. We had a king size bed, 2nd floor room on the street side of the Inn. Our room was good size with a large bathroom, bed was comfy but no mini fridge (we got ice from the staff). We arrived early & our room was ready. Our engraved baseball bat & other mementos we waiting for us on the bed. What a nice "Welcome". We unloaded our luggage & were off to explore the city before our first behind the scenes tour of Baseball Hall of Fame. Breakfast each morning included Coffee, tea, fresh fruit, muffins & frittatas. Our group enjoyed the breakfast & staff was very helpful. The Inn was in the heart of the city with a Parking Lot.......always a plus in a historic town.

Dear Pamela,

Thanks so much for your awesome review of the inn and our Ultimate Baseball Hall of Fame package. For baseball enthusiasts, the VIP treatment and access to areas of the National Baseball Hall of Fame that are typically off limits with a normal museum pass just can't be beat! We're so happy that you enjoyed the package and all the amenities that our historic hotel offers.

For future reference, we do have mini refrigerators available for placement in a guest room on request.

Sincerely,
Sherrie and Marc

First I will start out by saying that I was highly concerned about staying in a bed and breakfast. My concerns were gone from the moment I opened the front door. The place was very clean. The employees were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The Inn is walking distance to the baseball hall of fame. I highly recommend this Inn. I had a great time with my fiancée, especially because it was my birthday present. If it's free it's for me.

Dear John,

We're so happy you enjoyed your birthday and your stay at our historic hotel. With 18 guest rooms, The Inn at Cooperstown is a great start for those looking for the "bed and breakfast" experience without the "up close and personal" feeling that smaller inns and b&bs can generate. Many of our first time guests have told us they truly enjoyed the "hotel" feel of our property coupled with the friendly and professional service our staff provides. Thank you for recognizing this and for taking the time to write such a complimentary review.

Sincerely,

Stayed at the Inn for two nights last weekend. Beautiful setting, right in town, walk to everywhere. Owners are very personable. Rooms were clean and beautiful. Had all the amenities you could ask for. The bed was very comfortable. I was happy with my room but some others I saw were nicer and brighter. Stayed on the 3rd floor. If you have issues with stairs, don't stay up there. I loved it. Very quiet. Breakfast was included and it was the only thing that wasn't great. Cold cereal, fresh fruit, toast, little muffins and what tasted like low-fat quiche. Loved sitting on the huge front porch. Parked the car when we arrived and didn't move it again until we left. Couldn't ask for a better location. I would definitely recommend to anyone going to Cooperstown.

If location is everything, this place is right up there. It couldn’t be more convenient to the village sights & sounds. It is a charming historic building with a wonderful front porch and large front yard facing a quiet street and a small private park. The check-in process was easy and pleasant and the woman who welcomed us was very helpful with ideas on what to do in Cooperstown.

We were taken to our 2nd floor suite which was very nice, clean and nicely appointed with a comfy bed and separate cozy living room space including a TV, sofa, chair and a wet bar with a fridge, coffee maker, coffee supplies, wine glasses and even a corkscrew. Although there was no need for AC during our stay, there were two separate units in our suite so I imagine it would be very comfortable during a hot summer’s night. Much to our delight the room features windows that OPEN so we were able to take in the fresh fall air!!

There are no elevators so unless you are on the first floor expect to walk up & down stairs (with luggage). We didn’t expect a lift so it wasn’t an issue for us but if you have trouble with steps, inquire about options.

It was quiet although in a building this old, a lot of that depends on the guests, which isn’t the inn’s fault. Maybe instead of a hang tag asking guests to reuse towels to save the planet; (IMHO extremely tacky at this price point), some signage or a note on the inn’s TV page reminding guests that sound travels in a 139 year old building so don’t act like it's prom night at the Red Roof Inn, would be more appropriate...

The inn is delightful and we had a wonderful stay but I have a few easily remedied MINOR complaints that should be considered by the owners:

First of all, while housekeeping did a fantastic job on cleaning our room & bathroom, they partially neglected the wet bar. When we arrived, a small wastebasket stashed in the cabinet below still had trash and an empty wine bottle in it from the previous guests. In addition, although I used the coffee maker each of the three mornings we were there. Never once was the coffee maker basket emptied (despite being purposely left open) nor the pot washed out.

Is that my job?

Curiously enough, the coffee was replenished and (I assume) clean mugs replaced in the storage area, yet no additional creamers were put into the fridge...??

Second, the breakfast was meh…nothing really special and to be honest, not a whole lot better or adventurous than a free continental breakfast at a Hampton Inn. I guess I was a little disappointed at the limited choices after experiencing much more at comparable inns across the country. Maybe if we only stayed a single night it wouldn't have been so bad but after the second morning of mediocrity, on day three we opted for the Cooperstown Diner which was a FIRST for us when staying at a B&B.

Exacerbating the boring breakfast, the dining area is too cramped with the food station, coffee station (depending on which dining room you were in) and two large tables in a such a small area. Maybe the food should be in a totally different room or guests should be served instead of having breakfast buffet style which really made getting your food a chore in the crowded quarters.

Or...

Why not expand the seating into the unused living room/TV area using folding tables or the checker/chess board table during breakfast so guests don’t have to squeeze past one another to get their food? While you are at it, add a second coffee station which was another unnecessary hassle. Or better yet, have staff serve all the beverages since the coffee thermos and cream decanters always seemed to be empty.

We really didn’t enjoy the breakfast experience at the inn which is half of the B’s in B&B.

Other than those issues which may not bother everyone as much as us, the Inn at Cooperstown was very nice, welcoming and a nice place to stay but it could easily be perfect.

Room Tip: People coming back late at night in the rear parking lot can wake you if you are in a back room but...

Dear Floyd,

Thanks so very much for all of your compliments and kind words about the inn. We know it takes time to write a review and we appreciate that fact that you took the time.

You are correct - the housekeeping staff should have taken care of your coffee pot, coffee items, and emptied the trash. Our sincere apologies for this oversight. Those items should not have been overlooked and it is certainly not up to the high standard of housekeeping that we consider to be the norm at our hotel. We have already shared your comments with the entire staff and re-emphasized the need to be on top of all the details.

In regards to breakfast, The Inn at Cooperstown serves an expanded continental breakfast that includes a hot egg entrée, fresh fruit salad, yogurt, assorted cereals and granola, homemade muffins, toast, assorted juices, tea and fresh brewed, locally roasted coffee. Two types of artisanal bread, sunflower-raisin and cracked wheat, are offered for toasting. The hot egg entree as well as the muffin flavors change daily. Over the years we’ve made numerous changes and improvements to our breakfast in hopes to satisfy a wide variety of guests and we frequently receive compliments on the items we serve.

Thanks also for your suggestions on the the configuration of our dining rooms. During our busy periods we frequently utilize the game table in the living room as well as the front porch (when weather is nice) as additional dining space.

Thanks again,
Sherrie and Marc

Let me start this review off by saying I have not stayed here. My husband and I saw the Inn online and thought it would be a wonderful place to stay. The reservation process was frustrating and ultimately unsuccessful. When we went online to book, we were required to input our personal information (name, address, phone number, nights we wished to book.) We received a confirmation email saying the room we requested was available, with a price quote. When we called to confirm within 12 hours, we were told that room was no longer available and the only available rooms were either twin beds or the almost $400 suit. When I referenced the email confirmation, I was told that online requests did not reserve rooms, only calling with a credit card number would. My two biggest frustrations would be I provided all my personal information for no reason and I am uncomfortable with the purpose collecting it if there is no actual reservation made. Secondly, I almost feel as if it was a bait and switch. I understand that with only 18 rooms they frequently have no vacancies but for only the most expensive and least expensive to be available seems fishy to me. We ultimately booked elsewhere and are very happy with our decision.

Dear Grifla,

We are sorry we were not able accommodate you during your recent trip to Cooperstown. Please note that the Reservation Request Form on our website clearly states the following:

"Submitting this form does not guarantee a reservation. This is a request only. We will check your requested dates and email a reply. We'll call only if you've requested it, and all guaranteed reservations are confirmed in via email or in writing."

When we receive a reservation request form, we respond as soon as possible via email with our most current availability at that particular moment in time. Summer (mid-May through Labor Day) is high season for Cooperstown and the inn typically runs very close to 100% occupancy during that period with many of those reservations booked far in advance. Fall (Labor Day through the end of October) is the second busiest time in Cooperstown, especially on the weekends. During these very busy periods the status of room availability changes, sometimes radically, within a few minutes to a few hours. The majority of the 18 guest rooms at the inn are "Classic" rooms with a queen bed. A few Classic rooms have two twin beds. The Classic rooms are the most popular. The inn does have two suites, one of which is the "Luxury Suite", a beautifully appointed 2-bedroom, 2 full bath suite with 1300 square feet of space, a large living room with fireplace and wet bar and its own private entrance. The Luxury Suite can accommodate up to 5 guests. This suite is perfect for two couples traveling together or a family of 4 or 5. While this suite is often booked because of the unique dynamics there are times where it is the only accommodation not booked.

It is important to note that we collect basic reservation information in our online reservation request form only to help make the process of booking and finalizing a reservation more convenient and efficient for our guests. There is no requirement for any guest or prospective guest to fill in this form as they can simply reach us by phone if they prefer. If we do not have the appropriate availability, all of the information in the reservation request form is promptly and automatically deleted. We take the security of our guest's information very seriously and all data in our reservation system is password protected. Our data collection process is subject to annual audits of which we pass with flying colors each year.

The 18 guest rooms at The Inn at Cooperstown are sold on a first come, first serve basis. It is our practice never to hold rooms or double book. Again we are sorry that you experienced some unfortunate timing between the email response and the time that you called to actually book the reservation. We're happy that you were able to find other lodging in Cooperstown and hope that you will give The Inn at Cooperstown a second chance should you decide to return.

SIncerely,
Sherrie and Marc
