“Centrally located, clean, and friendly, but certainly not cookie-cutter”
Reviewed October 13, 2011

I was a little skeptical when we pulled up...the hotel was (seemingly) in the middle of nowhere, and although it was clean and well-kept, it didn't look like much. However, the innkeeper was very friendly and hospitable when we checked in, upgraded our room slightly, gave us restaurant recommendations, and even gave us beautiful artwork (the innkeeper is also an artist). When we walked to our room, we noticed that the outside of the hotel had been beautifully decorated for fall with cornstalks and pumpkins, and inside the rooms were also decorated and smelled like wonderful spiced potpourri! The room was adorable, more like a B&B but without the breakfast part. The place had a nice "homey" feel, as it certainly wasn't like any of the chain hotels, but much nicer I thought. My only complaint was that the beds weren't the most comfortable. Other than that, we soon learned that the hotel was VERY centrally located (about a 5-minute drive from EVERYWHERE WE WANTED TO GO, especially the Cooperstown downtown area), and the grounds were really nice...we even played wiffleball on the lower soccer field every morning!
This place would be great for those with active kids, as there is a small pool and there are fields for sports as well, along with a basketball hoop, soccer goal nets, and a volleyball net. The price was absolutely right, (and surprising for all of the amenities offered, like a REAL coffemaker in the room and REAL coffee, and a mini-fridge and microwave that you don't have to pay extra for) and the next time I go to Cooperstown, I will be staying here again.

Found this place on tripadvisor and am very glad I did. We stayed two nights in The Texas Leaguer and were very happy. Room was very clean and comfy although the mattresses are Firm. We made good use of the fridge, microwave, and coffee pot. The owners even provide large containers of ground coffee and powdered creamer with a bunch of sweetener packets and some tea bags along with napkins and mugs. Only thing to consider is don't stay in the carriage house rooms if you cannot deal with a small shower. Eric said the other rooms have larger showers so just take one of the other rooms. Early October required heat and you could adjust the thermostat to get as much as needed. Great value and well worth it. No, it's not the Hilton with restaurant down the hall, but would you rather have posh digs or nice owners on site? I'll take the nice owners on site anytime especially when cleanliness is top notch.

We needed to get away for a few days and this was the perfect place to go. Cooperstown area is absolutely beautiful and Gateway is located in the middle of the hilly countryside, but still close enough to Main Street and all of the attractions. Eric and Lynn, the owners and caretakers, made us feel welcome from the very start, it was as if we had already known them. They were very helpful in recommending places to eat, visit, and the best directions to get there. We were pleasantly surprised when we received an upgrade to the Commissioner's Suite from a standard room. The suite was clean, comfortably furnished, and had a kitchen. It really felt to us more as visiting friends than staying at an Inn or Motel. The view from the property of the surrounding countryside is stunning. It was quiet and relaxing. We're planning to get away again to view the fall color change, and will be definitely returning to Gateway.

When about to experience a hotel for the first time, there's always a bit of nervousness.....and to be sure we were aware that some of the reviews here provided a warning. But, here's the thing: If you place a priority on cleanliness, good service and value, this is the place for you. If warm fuzzies are required, you might want to look elsewhere. Our suite (The Commissioner's Suite) was lovely - country decorated with some lovely appointments to admire - truly unexpected. Our needs were minimal - but they were met quickly by owners, Lynn and Eric. We were all adults so brought little in the way of challenges - kids, pets may be welcome but we observed no one else while we were there - although the place was booked. It was quiet, peaceful and clean. There is not enough parking unless one follows the very explicit directions of the owners and that level of scrutiny, though understandable, creates a bit of tension with the owners. If we had a magic wand we would definately create a parking lot so everyone could be comfortable regardless of where the visitors put their car.

Eric's artwork graces The Commissioner's Suite and we appreciated his beautiful work - as well as the baseball memoribilia in the other bedroom. The kitchen was stocked to meet the needs of any vacationer with some nice added touches including jams and jellies in the fridge for toast, nice wine glasses and dish soap for the guest's use. The towels were nice and fluffy and the linens clean - country quilts add to the laid back feel of the place. We found the mattress on the king size bed perfect to our liking - always such a subjective factor to evaluate. Brother also enjoyed a good night sleep in the other bedroom. Plenty of hot water was available - not so much water pressure but adequate. The vaulted ceiling have skylights and the place is so cozy you really think you're visiting family more than a commercial property. Lynn said to think of the place as our home away from home - it's easy to do! We were experiencing heat and humidity weatherwise but the AC worked well and the ceiling fan served to cool off the whole suite. TV in the LR plus one in each bedroom was a nice touch along with much appreciated cable and WiFi internet service.......we really loved that.

We appreciate all of the efforts of our hosts and will happily return again the next time Cooperstown is on our itinerary. Thank you Eric and Lynn for a lovely respite from our busy lives.

Room Tip: Can only speak about the Commissioner's Suite which could easily and comfortable hold more than...

I stayed in the Doubleday Suite, it was spacious, warm and very affordable. Lynne was incredibly gracious, and although I was late getting up to Cooperstown, she stayed past check-in hours to hand me the key (though because it's a mom and pop place, please get in town on time). Situated halfway between Main St in Cooperstown and the Ommegang Brewery, it was very convenient. I'll be sure to come back next time I'm in town.

we are normally Hampton Inn people, have never been east and been in B&B or hotels, this was a shocker. At first we were scared because of entrance. the place was nice and comfortable but owner need to upgrade entrance and mow/weed eat/appearance more inviting. It probably could be nice and inviting with flower and trimming. The room is small, tv, he got us ice in a baggy and put in refrig. Cost was half price so that was great, not in town but ok. We probably would go back here if we ever went back to Cooperstown which we won't, once is enough.

Thank you for your response. While state and municipal entities classify Gateway Inn & Suites as a hotel, we rather think of ourselves as a small country inn. Those who visit our web site before booking realize that. And those who don’t are often shocked that we are not a four story hotel, surrounded by asphalt and adorned with brick and or concrete planters. We embrace a beauty that is found in few other places than the foothills of the Catskills and in as much have supplemented the inherent wildflower base on our grounds with plantings of our own. That being said, we realize that we are not for everyone. Yet at the same, many have been pleasantly surprised by the comforts of our offerings and as you have rated us as “Very Good” or “Excellent.” We are sorry to learn that you sense a one- time trip to Cooperstown “is enough.” Considering the Hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum, Farmers’ Museum, two breweries, winery, cider mill, wax museum, Historic Hyde Hall, the Otsego Lake boat tour, Farmers’ Market and on and on and on, there is much that you missed in your less than twenty four visit. Give Cooperstown another chance and you will likely find a one day, one time visit is far from ‘enough!’

We enjoyed our stay while our son played at Cooperstown Dreams Park the week of August 13th. Our room was very clean, attractive and much of the artwork was created by the very talented and helpful Inn Keeper.
