“Can't wait to go back!”
Reviewed May 23, 2011

We've stayed at several wonderful b&b's over the past few years, but have never felt so warmly welcomed as at the Diastole. Everything is so comfortable and relaxing, you'll forget that you're a paying guest, and feel like a welcome friend. Our room was even larger than expected from website photos-the opposite of the usual experience. Furniture was comfortable-with plenty of places to curl up and relax. All is done in a super combination of the up to date, and lovely vintage accents. There is a lot to do in the area, but you'll find yourself looking for excuses to hang around this B&B! The views from our private deck were amazing. Brigitte also makes a great cup of coffee. We will definitely be going back. Do not miss the Diastole!!!!

We visited Cooperstown for the Hall of Fame and stayed one night at Diastole. Brigitte and Lou were wonderful hosts...very friendly and helpful. We drove through a bad snowstorm to get there but it was worth it! Diastole was beautiful and rustic. The rooms were exceptionally clean and comfortable. We loved the furnishings, fireplace in our room and breathtaking views from our private porch...even if it was too cold to be outside long. Breakfast was perfect with great conversation with fellow travelers. We'll be back! Thanks Brigitte!

My husband and I just returned from a wintry weekend stay at Diastole with Brigitte, our hostess, and her husband Lou. I must say that all of the reviews on this sight were accurate! Arriving on the coattails of a winter storm that delivered 13 inches to the Cooperstown area, my husband and I were greeted by Brigitte who was willing to come out to push our car (which did not have four wheel drive and snow tires) to get us in. It was immediately like being welcomed home. She was so warm and kind and even willing to go into town with us to get take out when the roads were still bad.

At every turn, our hostess showed great hospitality by offering suggestions and tips which were accurate and helpful. Mornings were delightful eating in the breakfast room with a breathtaking view of the snow covered lake through the forest. We had a great choice of breakfast food which was delicious. Overall, our stay was excellent, just what we needed. Thanks to Brigitte and Lou for sincere hospitality!

My partner and I are travelers, but we require very different things when we travel. Having just a "good" experience for either of us is important. At Diastole, we both had a wonderful experience. Granted, our stay at the B&B through Christmas may be unusual for many people and you may read the rest of this review with the knowledge that the timing of our stay had much to do with our experience.

Upon our arrival in the afternoon on Christmas Eve, Brigitte and her husband Lou, the proprietors of Diastole, welcomed us warmly. We had already had some quid pro quo via email with Brigitte regarding restaurants that might accommodate us for dinner on Christmas, but we had forgotten we'd be arriving hungry for dinner on Christmas Eve. With several recommendations to guide us, we eventually had our choice narrowed for us as there was only one restaurant in town open past 5:30pm. (Good travel sense should remind you that Winter travel, of course, will be dramatically different from Spring or Summer travel to the very same place(s). So, consider as many angles of your trip in the planning stage as possible.)

We ate at Nicoletta's - a short drive from Diastole into town (no more than 8-11 minutes). Though this car ride from the hilltop hide-away overlooking Lake Otsego might seem unappealing to some, we were grateful to have that home-away-from-home feeling of leaving the house to go out, and to come back in at our leisure. Diastole is snugly tucked in the hills off of Route 33 into Cooperstown. Its situation just outside of town is really a "plus" for its quietness and natural beauty. I can imagine that, in the Summer when the Glimmerglass Opera house and Baseball Hall of Fame are attracting crowds, Diastole is a great place to stay and to retreat at the end of the day. If you prefer to be in the center of activities and enjoy constant hustle and bustle, then Diastole may not be for you.

We were awed by not only the restfulness of the house, but the large, tastefully decorated rooms. As I mentioned, my partner and I have stayed in B&Bs before and Diastole has, so far, outshone them all. The rooms are furnished in the Adirondack rustic style and the bed was ~sigh~just right. I did not have to navigate around pointless furniture or have to pretend not to see dusty fake flowers or be frighted into catatonia because there were knick-knacks to knock over everywhere.

Our breakfast menu had all of the traditional choices (oatmeal, omelets, yogurt n' granola, sausage, bacon, toast, and the like). The settings each morning were lovely and the fruit in the fruit cup was fresh and sweet (hard to come by in December).

Christmas Day in the afternoon we were offered a drive through town and around the lake. This was a treat, something that Brigitte cannot offer year 'round or when the B&B is completely full. We, of course, felt like VIPs and this drive was the highlight of our stay. We took about an hour to see Cooperstown's many elegant houses, the place where Baseball players are inducted into the Hall of Fame (not in the Hall of Fame itself), the home that James Fenimore Cooper gave his daughter, Kingfisher Tower (a monument erected to to give the lake a medieval flavor), and many other interesting sites. We even caught a glimpse of town philanthropist Jane Forbes Clark standing in front of her home.

Diastole B & B, less busy this first Winter*, is a solid find. Though dining options in Cooperstown are somewhat limited during this season (there is always nearby Fly Creek), the lack of "too much" and the abundance of "just enough" of everything we felt we needed made our stay 100% satisfactory.

*2010 is the first Winter they are open of the decade or so the B&B has been going strong. Also, we didn't take any photos, but there are plenty of (accurate) photos on Diastole's website.

This is going to be a long review, so bear with me. See below for details, but the main take-away should be that this is a lovely, wonderful B&B that we highly recommend.

My fiance and I visited the Diastole during the first weekend of December, for a mini vacation. We chose it because of its location-- only 3 miles from the Baseball Hall of Fame, which meant we could get there easily even if weather was bad, but put us near the woods. It was the perfect choice. The B&B is lovely, with a great view of the lake. The rooms were beautiful--spacious, pretty, with a warm, rustic rustic feel. They are nicely decorated while avoiding the overly flowery or kitschy feel that B&Bs can sometimes get. We were on the second floor, where there are only two rooms, and the rooms in the house seemed far enough apart that you had your own space. The common areas were great, with a TV in one room, a beautiful breakfast area with a view of the lake, and a outdoor hot tub-- super fun under the stars on a cold night! There is a common-use refrigerator, and utensils, cups, plates, etc., are always available. Restaurants in town are good, but a great option is to bring food back and relax at the Diastole. Hot breakfast is included, and is a good way to start the day. The owners are very nice. They are knowledgeable about the area and have put a great deal of care into the B&B itself--with excellent results.
As for the location: the Hall of Fame is excellent (I am not a baseball fan, my fiance is, and we both really enjoyed the museum), as is the town itself. Plus, there is some nice hiking/walking in the area, which means non-baseball fans have things to do beyond the museum.
The only thing I might flag is that you may want snow tires or an otherwise snow-ready vehicle if there is a chance of snow (Diastole is up a hill on a back road). We had snow tires on our small car, and were fine. Totally worth it--the B&B and surrounding environment was gorgeous in the snow.
All in all, the B&B is highly recommended.

I could not put in order what we liked the most...the view, the warm accomodations or the genuine kindness of our hostess. It was truly like visiting a good friend - Brigitte made us feel like we were long lost family - back for a visit! there is no doubt that we will return, especially to bring our 10 year old daughter! We are lucky we live only half an hour away, so we can visit Diastole every season to see the beautiful changes on the lake! But,even if the trip were longer - we would not hesitate to return several times a year!
