Landmark Inn
Ranked #1 of 29 Cooperstown B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 18, 2013

My husband and I recently set off on a road trip visiting several places, big cities, small towns and everything in between... of course, our first stop had to be Cooperstown to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame. I enjoy sports but truthfully this was not high on my list of places to go, nevertheless, of we went. I had checked out b and b's before leaving and liked all I read about Landmark Inn. we arrived on a sunny afternoon and were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff. I can't say enough good things about this b and b... The location, ( walkable to all the sites) the cleanliness ( second to none) I loved the idea of having our own entrance and porch to sit on and enjoy our morning tea. The food was also top shelf.... I could have easily stayed longer , but we had many other sites to visit. I would recommend this spot as one of the best .... like the tittle says ... Landmark Inn ... very well could and should be in the B ad B hall of Fame.... keep up the great job.... Theresa

Room Tip: Our room was at the back of the house , separate entrance..was great.

Wow, Theresa... the B&B Hall of Fame? Thanks so much, but it means much more to us to be in your hall of fame. It's how our guests feel and what they experience that matters most to us. Each week the Landmark team puts time aside to ask ourselves, "How can we create an even better guest experience?" Lots of suggestions already adopted but this winter will see a number of progressions at the Innthat we think will go to even greater lenghts to assure a memorable stay for our guests. We'll keep you posted on our FB site!

We enjoyed our stay at the Landmark Inn. The location and general accommodations served us well during the three nights we spent there recently.

It gets three stars instead of 4 or 5 (wish I could do 3.5) because I don't think the jets in the jacuzzi tub, which was nice otherwise, had been properly cleaned (maybe not for a while). We used them on our last night there, otherwise we would have asked for it to be cleaned. Once the jets were turned on, build up was injected into the water.

Also, the room had an adjoining suite that was occupied, and we could clearly hear our neighbors speaking, assume they could hear us. There was no issue with noise at night, but was different than what we're used to.

Otherwise, the room was nice and spacious. I really liked having a large bathroom, dresser, and closet. The shower is luxurious. The property and home is very lovely, and we felt comfortable there. And, again, the location was perfect. Just off the main street, fairly quiet during our stay, but easy walking access to everything in town.

Thank you for sharing that you enjoyed your 3 night stay at the landmark and that our rooms are spacious and showers luxurious. Thank you for also stating that the location is perfect and that the grounds and house are lovely, and also that you felt comfortable here. Guests will be happy to learn from you that there was no noise at night, as well.

As for the jacuzzi, quite candidly, I am not sure how that possibly could have happened. Our housekeeping regimen includes the following:

1) Cycling/bleaching of all jacuzzis at any sign of use
2) Weekly cycling/bleaching of all jacuzzis even if NO use.
3) AND if a guest inquires about a jacuzzi when they make their reservation - which you did - we prep the jacuzzi by cycling/bleaching the day of your arrival.

Our housekeeping records indicate that ALL THREE of these were done. Had you stated that there was an aroma of bleach when you operated the jacuzzi I would not have been surprised, but buildup is incomprehensible.

While the vast majority of our guests remark about how quiet The Landmark - an 1856 Mansion - is. We are always looking for ways to improve the guest experience and will be reviewing options for additional sound-proofing this winter.

Thank you for choosing the Landmark and for helping us get better.

Thanks Henry! Room 10 continues to be a favorite of our guests. But what's a favorite of ours is when guests experience the Landmark relaxation that they came in search of! This past weekend there was a hint of fall in the air. The leaves on our ancient maples are beginnng to turn and flutter to the ground. As if to celebrate the changing of the season, three separate couples took the opportunity to sit in our incomparable back yard, breathe the cool air and read the paper. Please come back and see us soon. Fall is especially lovely here in Cooperstown.

We have been to Cooperstown at least 10 times in the past 18 years, this was our 1st stay at the Landmark Inn and we will never stay there again. I will say that the outside front & indoor public spaces are very nice but that's where it ends for us. We arrived at the Inn before lunch, check in was at 3:00 so we headed off in to town for lunch, etc. Arrived back at the Landmark at about 3:15 to find 4 other couple/family groups all standing around the living room area looking rather lost. The Inn has no check-in desk & there was no one there to let anyone in or give out room keys. After a few minutes my husband noticed a buzzer near the front door w/ a note saying to press if you needed assistance. We did but nothing happened. A few minutes later a woman came down from upstairs carrying dirty linens, snapped "almost ready" & walked away. Now there were 6 groups waiting to check in & still no help. Then the woman finally came back w/ someone else & they began handing out room keys. We waited from 3:15 to 3:45 to get in our room. Great first impression.
The room we had was ok, the shower hadn't seen an update since the 1980's & the sink/countertop were more shabby than chic. There was also a hair on the floor of the bathroom that was there when we arrived & still there when we left. The bedroom furniture were more guest room at someone's house than Inn.
Breakfast the next morning was fine, slow but fine. They don't start serving until 8:30-be warned if you are an early riser or if you want to make it to the Hall of Fame for opening you might want to eat elsewhere.
Later that day we had a few questions for the innkeeper but couldn't find her or anyone on her staff. Oh well, par for the course.
Breakfast the next day was supposed to be served at 8:30 but nobody got their food until close to/after 9:00.
So to sum it up, there are better places to stay in Cooperstown, we are back to the Inn at Cooperstown next time (where we usually stay but they were full as our trip was last minute).

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere!

Thank you for your passionate review. We deeply regret that we did not exceed your expectations, which we have been doing consistently for our guests since we bought the inn in February. One thing we've learned as Innkeepers is that not every guest checks out on time. We take it as a compliment, of course, when they explain that the bed was too comfortable to leave, or that the Dream Shower was too relaxing to turn off. But it does put pressure on preparing the rooms for our next guests. Afterall, only at a Bed And Breakfast can you reserve a particular room. A hotel would simply place you in an available room.

Our gourmet breakfast is prepared fresh each morning, on site, by our own chef. Our freshly prepared fruit, freshly baked breads and locally roasted coffee are always placed on tables at 8:15, with our freshly made hot gourmet entree placed beginning at 8:45. That said, we always accomodate early risers. We wish you'd asked. The Landmark breakfast is not a buffet of cereal, yogurt and store-bought quiche. While that might allow greater flexibility, it would dramatically diminish the Landmark experience that our guests love, and what distinguishes us.

It is true that the grand mansion of the Landmark Inn does not have a "front desk". This is fairly common with Bed and Breakfasts. We do, however have an office for check-in/out. We are reviewing our signing to assure its location is clear. Thanks for the tip!

As for the carrying of dirty laundry down the stairs, well, you cought us laundering our comforters and duvee's - something even the finest hotels don't do with regularity. Comforters don't fit down the landery shoot. Sorry you had to see that.

We appreciate that no one wants to write negatively any more than we wish to read it. This is our first (and hopefully last) negative review. We are learning from it. Thank you.

Our stay at the Landmark Inn was superb. To begin with, breakfast each day was so delicious. I have a gluten allergy, and the chef made muffins, and French toast for me -- gluten free! We stayed for 4 nights and no two breakfasts were the same. Those of you who have food allergies, no worries here.
Our room was spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet. The shower water pressure is excellent.
There are nice quiet places outside to sit and read, chat, or snooze. The house has beautiful hardwood floors, and it is tastefully decorated.
The Inn's location is perfect, within walking distance to shops and some of the attractions.
We have stayed at quite a few B&Bs in the past, and Landmark Inn is a winner!

Thank you Elizabeth! It's always rewarding when guests enjoy the finer details of the Landmark.

Our outside seating areas are a favorite of our guests, whether they sit for a morning on the side porch to read the Times, share a bottle of wine with friends on the back lawn, or just slide into our adirondack chairs to let the Cooperstown sun shine on the faces for a moment.

And as for breakfast, our chef Vita takes personal pride assuring that her gourmet breakfasts never repeat during a guest's stay. Please, come see us again!

Just got back from a beautiful getaway to one of my favorite places ever, Cooperstown and the Landmark Inn...such a relaxing place, unobtrusive and lovely. Our room #2 I think is the perfect room. It has its own entrance and a private porch with the most comfortable rockers. The dream shower is just that...dreamie...The room is very spacious and comfortable. The breakfast this am was delicious french toast with fresh sliced peaches.and strips of bacon cooked perfectly... You are seated at a table that awaits you with a bowl of delicious fresh fruit, ice water and a glass of orange juice. The coffee is so good..and a nice mug...that get refilled as much as you like. We love it here and will definitely be back.....It is just a block or so away from the Main Street..easy walk to all the attractions and shops...

Room Tip: We like room 2...private porch with comfortable rockers....spacious room...breakfast is 8:30 to 9:30...

Thank you to our friends from Rhode Island! And thanks for mentioning the bacon. Might sound silly, but getting bacon perfectly cooked was something we strived for from day one. We found the neatest trick along the way, and it never fails. Fred's always disappointed because there never seems to be any left over for him!

And thanks for your reflections on room#2. So many people remark so favorably about room #2 that this winter the Landmark will be adding a new luxury suite to our inventory, a beautifully appointed spacious room on the first floor of the inn. It will have a private rocking porch, a gorgeous marble fireplace (original), original coffered ceilings, fully restored oak and cherry flooring, central air, and best of all perhaps... the most luxurious bathroom in Cooperstown! An absolute retreat... just like room #2. We hope you'll visit and tell us what you think.

We had a wonderful stay at the Landmark Inn traveling to Cooperstown with another couple to celebrate a 70th Birthday. The accomodations were excellent in this historic and renovated home. The 4 of us stayed in the two bedroom suite which was perfect for our needs. The location made for an easy walk to the center of town and Robin and Fred's recommendation of Toscana's resturant was excellent. The owners Robin & Fred Scheider were very pleasant and accomodating setting us up on the outside patio so we could enjoy a celebratory glass of wine. We also enjoyed our time with them socializing, exchanging stories and discussing NY Mets Baseball ! The breakfast was great, especially the cantelope soup. We look forward to staying with them again on our next trip to Cooperstown and would highly recommend the Landmark Inn.

Thank you so much for choosing the Landmark for celebrating a 70th birthday. Fred is still talking about how much he enjoyed swapping stories with you all and how you were able to go to the hall and look up your stats from when you played rookie ball in the Mets organization back in the early 60's. "Two doubles off Nolan Ryan", he keeps saying. "Dave got TWO DOUBLES OFF NOLAN RYAN! ... IN THE SAME GAME! " Thanks a lot for stirring him up, Dave! :) Seriously, we love guests that love to laugh and tell stories. Come again soon .
