In addition to an excellent permanent collection that gives you a sense of the area's history, there are always special exhibits to enjoy.

The building itself is part of the attraction. They have a terrific collection of American Art and Native American art as well as travelling exhibits. Beautifully curated.

The museum is on the main road heading in to Cooperstown but is probably bypassed by those heading to the baseball museum. All the better for those of us who made the stop. As another reviewer said: "what a treasure"! It is every bit as impressive as one of the Smithsonian museums only on a much more manageable scale. The traveling exhibit of Hudson River School paintings is sublime. The Wyeth exhibit is almost as good as Chadds Ford. I had never seen such an extensive Native American exhibit. So many different types of clothing, baskets, carvings...simply amazing. Not only was the artwork superb but the setting can't be beat. The view overlooking Otsego Lake is stunning. And the fact that you can have lunch on the patio and take it all in is just the cherry on top!

We stopped by the Fenimore Museum on the morning we left Cooperstown. We all wished we had been able to enjoy the museum and grounds more extensively. The art and artifacts are fabulous and there is an entire wing of the (home) museum dedicated to Native American Indian artifacts. The extensive grounds are breathtaking with the lake and various items to see behind the museum worth the extra time. Would have loved to bring a picnic lunch and sit out under a shade tree and enjoy the cool breeze and lake views.

Between their unbelievable Native American exhibit - the Hudson River School exhibit and the Wyeth Family exhibit we spent over 3 hours here! A beautiful building in it's own right, overlooking the lake with rolling hills, surrounded by some of America's most influential paintings and historic artifacts, it's not a bad way to spend a day. We enjoyed the art inside and the grounds outside! Had a nice lunch outside, enjoying the view of the lake and wondering what it would have been like to live here!
Very relaxing and worth the price of admission!
