“The Lighthouse Marina Resort: a pricey, luxury hotel in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

First off, the mechanics of making a reservation: an internet search for a room at the Lighthouse Marina Resort's website consistently revels "no vacancy". Do not be discouraged: simply phone the hotel directly and there are usually rooms available. On May 13, 2012, my girlfriend and I stayed in the second floor, non-smoking, very clean Room #201 overlooking Subic Bay for PP 8,800 (approximately USD $204.00) which included all taxes and a breakfast for two adults. The hotel's hallways are carpeted, which helps with the noise abatement. The walls between the rooms, however, are paper thin because we could hear other guests slamming doors and drawers in their rooms. The hotel does have a nice working elevator for those guests with small children or orthopedic mobility issues. The room furnishings were rather disappointing and spartan for a self-described "34 room boutique hotel". The king-size bed was ultra-firm to the point of discomfort; and the bed pillows consisted of clumped down feathers (probably due to the extreme humidity of the Subic Bay environment). There was plenty of closet and bureau drawer storage space for families. Kudos for the spacious CR (comfort room), which featured an immaculately clean, over-sized bathtub which was perfect for two adults! The clear-glass shower stall had a large-diameter rainfall shower head and hand wand with nice water pressure. The shower door, however, would not close all the way, thereby creating a mess on the floor. The room also had a fantastic private balcony. We were able to sip our morning coffee and read the complimentary newspaper while watching the sunrise over the peaceful Subic Bay. We ate breakfast in the hotel's spacious and clean dining room. There was a large selection of food, which would be appealing to both Asian and Western tastes, including eggs made to order! The dining room staff, however, was in dire need of remedial training in basic hygiene: one of the workers (a middle-aged male employee) had a terrible hack cough. That unfortunate employee looked ill and apparently had never learned to turn, and cover his mouth when he coughed. He continued to cough all over the extensive selection of fruits and salads while we ate. My GF subsequently lost her appetite after watching this gross display of spreading complimentary germs! By the way, if you use the "reusable laundry bag" in the closet you will be charged PP 50. I really dislike being nickel-and-dime to death because such an item is free in any other top-shelf hotel. Another small annoyance was that there was no complimentary internet service, as guests are required to pay for internet access. There was also a small refrigerator and hot-water pot in the room. So now patient explorers, here is the bottom line: would I stay there again? Yes, because I value my safety and security--the hotel always has two doormen on duty at all times. There is also a small in-room safe for valuables. On the whole, despite the coughing dining room employee, the hotel's staff was polite and professional. I also appreciate being within a short walking distance to the Pier One outdoor entertainment complex (featuring two live bands playing dance club music every night). Another useful tip while in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone: visit Texas Joe's Restaurant (also on the main waterfront avenue) for great steaks in a family-friendly, American-western environment.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the water, not the parking lot.

I stayed here with my wife and two kids and was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the staff. The suite was very spacious and the view from our balcony was breathtaking. The beach was very close but we chose to stay in the pool where we given free refreshments while swimming. This was a place for having fun for the whole family and expect the fun to last past midnight after all, it's a vacation. This was worth the stay and I recommend this resort to anyone.

Excellent service almost always spells the big difference between a mediocre hotel from an exceptional one and this is true for the Lighthouse Marina. The hook for me had been the great photos posted on the web but what would make me come back to this resort (and made me recommend it to my family and friends who'll be visiting Subic this summer) is the genuine hospitality and sincerity of all the resort staff...from the nice waitress who helped me keep my toddler entertained so I can finish and enjoy my lunch before we checked-in to the kind security guard who advised me to stay inside the lobby because it's starting to drizzle and I didn't notice. While admittedly, the rooms need some refurbishing to make it first-rate, it was forgivable because of the over-all cleanliness of the resort.

If you are looking for a true vacation where you can simply relax and enjoy your stay, I highly recommend The Lighthouse. From the facilities to the staff, the place is a haven indeed. Although it is a bit pricey as compare with the other hotels around the area, I still believe that it is worth paying for. On the other hand, the hotel also needs a little upgrade when it comes to its amenities such as additional spa and fitness center. And perhaps a karaoke bar for entertainment can be an added perk.

Room Tip: I still believe that it is best if the traveler can check out the rooms themselves. I'm actuall...

A nice place conveniently located along the wharf. Comfy beds, basic amenities. Easy access to eating places and shopping. Relatively new I think, except the carpets in the hallway looked worn out. But rooms are clean. Amazing view of the bay by their cafe, so a good breakfast with plenty of sunshine. Their 2nd floor had a small collection of books for leisure reading. You can borrow board games too, free for guests. Accommodating and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Choose the one with the bay view. Lovely sunrise to wake up to.

Stayed here with my girlfriend while we visited the different attractions in Subic. There were only a handful of guests during our stay so we really enjoyed the privacy.

Our room was an aqua spa suite and the one assigned to us was a corner room. It was very spacious, neat, and had a great view of the sea. It has its own mini bar, dvd player, 42" TV, Ipod dock and cooler. Our bed was neatly presented and very comfy. The bathroom was awesome we even had a Jacuzzi. To most, i may be a little pricey(w/ a 10% SC) but to us, it was almost like our home away from home. We loved staying there every chance we got.

We never got the chance to go to their bar but their Sands resto grill was very good. Ambiance is nice. Food is very good, although the menu was limited. Meanwhile their pools are classy and always clean. The only downside to the hotel was the undeveloped/barren landscape surrounding it.

The highlight of our trip is their service. Service was practically second to none. Everyone was very polite and seems to even take an effort to know who you are and what activities have you done during the day. My reservations officer/s took pretty good care of us and all our needs. She was always open to suggestions regarding our activities and even helped me prepare my surprise proposal to my girlfriend.

Our stay there was a blast and we would not hesitate to stay there again when we visit Subic. Thank you very much to all their staff and reservation hosts.

And one more thing, they have a live webcam facing the bar from the pool area. Dont forget to say hi!

Room Tip: Choose suites. Corner suites are large and sunny.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The most lavish and magnificent Subic Bay experience. Like a beacon that steers boats to shore, this magnificent establishment on the Subic waterfront can serve as a venue that beckons travelers seeking world-class comfort. Our Commitment: Lighthouse is committed to creating value and improving guests' experience. We have this genuine interest in our guests' evolving needs, thus we invest in our infrastructure and our people as we strive to provide a compelling guest experience. Our company was built on serving and satisfying guests and meeting if not surpassing our guests' needs is always our No. 1 priority. The Location: The Lighthouse Marina Resort is a three-floor, 34-room boutique hotel capped by a lighthouse. The hotel is sleek and ultra-modern in its Palafox-designed architecture. Done in almost austere Italianate architectonics with its elegantly simplistic hotel façade, the hotel's main building provides a perfect compliment to the 20 meter light tower done in surprising detail very faithful to naval architecture specifications. Its exclusive location hidden in the midst of the busy Waterfront Road makes it the ultimate haven of retreat. The Lighthouse was established in 2007 to provide transient residence to executives of business locators of the Subic free port zone and for tourists who frequent the port more for its sailing and eco‐tourism than its business. Ease of Travel: Proximity and ease of travel are always a concern for many people who are trying to escape the hustle and bustle of life in the metropolis. Just less than a year ago, Subic was a grueling three to four hour drive from the city capital. Today, all roads lead to a tranquil location, a journey of heightened leisure, traversing through a scenic paved ultra majestic highway newly built to serve as the main vein of the Manila-Subic connection, the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway. For a relaxing and inexpensive travel, the flicker of light at the Lighthouse Marina Resort just got brighter. A perfect vacation haven away from home just got closer. Its exclusive location hidden in the midst of the busy Waterfront Road makes it the ideal chill out place within the shorelines of Subic Bay. ... more   less
