What to say: I had the opportunity to spend a few days at the Harbor Rose, and now I can't wait to return there!
Besides the villa's position and fascinating design, and the quality of its interiors (something that anyone can easily appreciate from the photos), I need to drop an extremely positive comment about the owners: Dierdre and Salomon surely know how to treat their customers and make them feel welcomed and valued: they understand their personal needs, and act at to their best to fulfill them. A rare quality!

My wife and I spent one night recently. Deirdre is a wonderful, gracious host and we enjoyed her company. Our room was very nicely appointed, but there are only shears on the windows in our room - beware if you require a dark room for sleeping,
We enjoyed the porch and the sundeck - but the street is very busy and the traffic noise is unpleasant.,
Of the three rooms, only one it seems, has a bathroom en suite. The other two, including ours, share a bathroom. This is fully explained on the hotel website and on booking.com, where I made my reservation.
Another issue - there is apparently no cancellation policy that I could find and I tried.
The location is poor - the driveway is on a curve, making it very dangerous to leave the premises by car. We had a close call with a car coming south and saw similar comments in other reviews. Also, you are not within walking distance of town and there is no place to walk along the road near the water unless you drive at least a half-mile into town.
The host touts a "detox foot bath" - however, it is a little disconcerting to walk into the living room after going out to dinner and finding two people sitting with their feet in baths of brown water. We were told the water was brown because the "toxins" are being pulled out of the body. If that's true - why would you do that in the living room? However, reviews of this process show that the water turns brown simply from the electrolysis of the salts in the water.
There was a lot of talk about organic cooking, etc., but the frozen strawberries in my oatmeal at breakfast disabused me of the organic notion.

We do enjoy hosting guests and sharing our home. Thank you for appreciating our nicely appointed rooms and outdoor areas. Our home has an abundance of natural light, and yes if you prefer a dark room, book elsewhere or use a sleeping eye mask. The street can be noisy for those who are from rural areas; to accommodate this we have sound machines in the rooms with natural sounds such as crickets and birds. Glad the booking system you selected accurately depicted what we have to offer with every detail. The cancelation policy can be found in your conformation email, on our web site and naturally one can always call the property. When fresh organic strawberries are not in season or not available we use frozen organic strawberries and at times other organic berries served with organic steel cut oatmeal along with fresh fruit parfaits. Regarding the footbaths… like everything else there are high and low quality products and services and to appreciate the effectiveness, one has to have the “experience” first hand. – Deirdre Innkeeper

My husband and I were planning our stay at the Harbor Rose and, since we were in the area, decided to view the property personally prior to booking.

The Harbor Rose is utterly inaccessible due to a very dangerous driveway set along a major route. We had extreme difficulty entering the driveway and barely missed a collision trying to leave as well.

Any thoughts of "strolling along the harbor" or into the quaint town, as represented by their site, are completely misrepresented as it would be impossible to walk this busy highway with no sidewalks.

Interestingly, guests who have “actually stayed with us” have enjoyed a wonderful experience. We encourage potential guests to speak with the Innkeeper before booking a reservation to be sure we are a good fit for your travel needs. Our site does not represent that a guest can walk from the property to the village. A guest can walk from our property to the CSH LABS, as there is a foot path between the road and the harbor and guests can hike on the state hiking tails accessible from our back yard and arrive in the village where there are sidewalks. Regarding the driveway, the disturbance is the responsibility of our neighbors and is anticipated to be restored shortly.

This is our personal home and a true Bed & Breakfast experience. It is unfortunate that people who have “not experienced” what we have to offer are permitted to write reviews. - Deirdre - Innkeeper

This is no place for handicapped, lots of hard to negotiate stairs and a Victorian bathtub nearly impossible to get in and out of. The one large bathroom is used by all guests who want to shower or bathe. We booked the Pricey Cictorian Suite and had to share our one assigned bath with three other gusts. That made us regret our choice. Worse was the nearly dangerous driveway with a deep gulley sure to trap your car after pulling off a busy road with cars whipping around the bend. I had nightmare about negotiating in and out of the property. On the good side, the whole inn was impeccably clears and appointed, the king size bed comfortable, and we had a private terrace overlooking the harbor. The other guests were nice and interesting to meet. Deidre, our hostess, tried hard to make a lovely visit and offered bountiful breakfasts.

Jennifer, we enjoyed hosting you and are so glad you enjoyed our comfortable beds, impeccably clean home and bountiful breakfast. You are correct this is no place for those with difficulty walking or with stairs. Our historic home was built nearly 200 years ago and resides on the National Registry of Historic Places and have no handicap rooms. Unfortunately, the driveway apron was under construction during your stay and its resolve is a dispute between my two neighbors - we hope to arrive at a solution soon. - Deirdre - Innkeeper

My wife and I have stayed at many B&Bs over the years. I booked the Harbor Rose based on the photos and reviews I saw online. On arrival we were greeted by a young girl who said she would be our guide. This was completely inappropriate and unprofessional. Her mother then came out of her office and after speaking with us was unable to find our online reservation. She then proceeded to show us the "accommodations", the Garden Room on the first floor. The Garden Room is a solarium attached to the rear of the house and is completely lacking in privacy. We were then told that our bathroom was on the second floor and that we had to share it with the family. The house is in disrepair and dirty, the rooms are substandard and the atmosphere is bizarre. We left and booked a room at the Marriot in Melville which was excellent both in accommodations and service. We contacted booking.com about a refund and have been given a runaround for a week.I would strongly advise everyone reading this review to avoid the Harbor Rose.

The Harbor Rose is our nearly 200 year old historic home and is not a good fit for everyone. We consistently get excellent reviews on service and cleanliness from those guests who actually “stay” with us. When booking a reservation it is always best to speak with the Innkeeper to be sure it is a good fit for your travel needs. We are a family, not a hotel and offer an eco-friendly non-toxic unique lodging experience that includes, personalized service, luxury Egyptian cotton linens, organic bath amenities, purified water system, alkaline water in the room and an organic farm to table handcrafted breakfast, catering to Vegan, Gluten Free and Vegetarian preferences. Additional services available include Ionic Detox Footbaths and unique learn and play packages. Our guest rooms are uniquely appointed and bathrooms are not shared with the host family.

We request that each guest notify us 1 hour before their arrival time so that the Innkeeper can be sure to personally greet them. If the Innkeeper is otherwise occupied for a few minutes you may be entertained by her “at service” daughter with a helpful attitude. If you are looking for an impersonal “cookie cutter” hotel stay please don’t book with us. Peace & Blessings, Deirdre- Innkeeper
