“Chautauqua Charming B&B”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

Six of us recently stayed at the Great Tree Inn and Stables and we LOVED EVERY minute of our stay!! We have all stayed in various B&Bs and by far, this is one of the best!! The rooms are charming with private baths. A very nice added touch were extra towels. The Inn is decorated to the "T". It was fun to walk around and see the different art work and the history of the Inn. The great room and outside deck were perfect for relaxing in the evenings and socializing. Breakfast both days was delicious (and I'm pretty picky!). The Inn is conveniently located very close to the Chautauqua institute and several good restaurants. We would definitely return to the Inn!

Room Tip: The 7th Heaven Room is located on the ground floor so you don't have to carry a suitcase up the...

We visited Great Tree Inn while visiting Chautauqua Institute. We usually choose bed and breakfasts and small country inns for our travels, both at home and abroad, due to the charm, hospitality and "little extras" which usually make these places special. This Inn was ok, but lacking in both amenities and hospitality. I found the inn to have very basic, inadequate toiletries, skimpy pillows and towels, uncomfortable bed, poor lighting and very basic decor. The Inn itself had good common space, and the breakfasts were good, but overall, it lacked charm and that "something special" which we've come to expect from places like this. In all fairness, the place has been sold, so maybe the current innkeepers have lost their passion for the place. It is a lovely old house, and it does have good potential. We felt it was over-priced considering the quality of both the service and accommodations.

Room Tip: We did have a peek at the larger rooms, and they looked considerably nicer than ours.

What a great place to spend a Chautauqua weekend stay. Sam and Louis are gracious and entertaining hosts (soon moving on to further life adventures). The rooms are quaint and charming, the breakfasts were superb, and the B and B is just a short drive to the storied Chautauqua Institution. Hopefully, the next/new owners will continue the high standards of quality we enjoyed!!

I was in town for a visit to Lily Dale and stayed at The Great Tree Inn. I was greeted by owner Sam and she showed me the house. It is a lovely place and I felt at home immediately. The grounds are lovely and there is a great place to eat dinner down the road. This is a place I will return for sure.

I booked our one night stay back in November after speaking at length with Louis about what I was looking for as a gift for my boyfriend. Louis suggested the "perfect pairing" package to go with our visit, along with a gift certificate so I could present the gift to my boyfriend. The gift certificate mistakenly identifed that the stay was for two nights - a mild error, but it was a bit awkward explaining to my boyfriend that the gift was only for one night.

Upon arrival, we were pleased with how cozy the home is. Our room (the English Ivy) was nice, but I definitely felt misled on another detail. The room description on the website and Louis's description on the phone both described the shower as being a "two person shower." This is not the case at all. Two people can definitely fit in the shower, but I think most people would think of a "two person shower" has having two shower heads and being at least as big as tub shower. This was the size of a shower stall and a half.

Within moments of opening the door to our room, we were given two glasses of sparkling wine, consistent with the "perfect pairing package." Our chocolate covered strawberries, part of the package, did not arrive.

We were invited to participate in a wine tasting before dinner that I think was a part of another package. This went on a bit too long and resulted in dinner being delayed by quite a bit. We are early to bed, early to rise people so by the time dinner was over, we were flat-out exhausted. Nevertheless, the owner of a nearby winery was on site and was pleasant to chat with.

Dinner was better than OK, but was not of the gourmet quality other reviewers have described. It was very good homemade food. I should also note that the waitress (I use that word not knowing precisely her relationship to the owners) was a bit too chatty. She told us that we could not take dessert in our rooms because of mice and also commented that certain guests and tables were annoying to her. Her intent was friendly, but ultimately her conversation needs to be refined. The last thing I want to hear when spending money on an overnight stay is the word "mice."

Breakfast the next morning was very good and I would describe it as gourmet.

I should note that this was our first vist to a B&B ever so we really didn't know what to expect. We were overall pleased with the stay.

GT-Management, Owner at Great Tree Inn Bed & Breakfast, responded to this review, April 26, 2012
We’re truly sorry that the reviewer’s weekend didn’t completely live up to expectations. We pride ourselves on delivering a superior service, as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive response record we have on Tripadvisor. I’ll do my very best to address the points raised.

First off, the welcoming glasses of sparkling wine accompanied by fresh chocolate-covered strawberries are part of a 2-night ‘Wine and Dine’ package and are served upon arrival on the Friday. Because the reviewer arrived on Saturday afternoon, and in anticipation of dinner being served, the hostess held back the strawberries, intending to serve them together with a glass of ice-wine as a post-dinner treat. Unfortunately the reviewer retired promptly after dinner and did not join other Inn guests for after-dinner coffees and the accompanying port and liqueurs, compliments of the hosting winery.

The shower referred to has two seats and is bigger than other showers in the Inn, and is why it was advertised it as a 2-person shower. We apologize for any misrepresentation as this was not intended. To avoid a recurrence of this we have modified the description.

The package that weekend included the guests visiting a featured winery accompanied by various wine tastings, including blind tastings and other participative activities. Unfortunately, as the reviewer had not participated in the wine tasting at the winery, they were unaware of the process and therefore assumed that the dinner service was late.

Whilst dinner at the Inn is not advertised as being gourmet, that so many guests equate the dishes to being of a gourmet standard is a tribute to the chef. We thank the reviewer however for their comments regarding the Inn’s breakfast, something that is echoed by many guests besides.

As for the comments about “mice”, this was in response to the reviewer requesting that they take their dessert to their room. The server responded that it was preferable that they didn’t, given that the Inn is located in the country and food spilt in their suite could be an invitation for mice to take up residence. Unfortunately, the reviewer took the comment quite literally to indicate the presence of mice, which is far from the case.

This was another great weekend at the Great Tree. My husband and I shared the weekend at Great Tree with my brother & sister in law and sister and brother in law. We had a fabulous weekend. Sam once again proved to be the ultimate hostess and her meals didn't disappoint. Another fabulous dinner and breakfasts that were awesome. The meals were also served by the very entertaining Kye. She was not only served the food, but entertained and informed on the various attractions in the Chautauqua area. We also found time to sit and reminisce around the cozy fireplaces in both of the comfortable sitting rooms. The weekend was made even better by the fabulous Erie Wine Trail Wine and Chocolate weekend. What a wonderful winter get away weekend.

My husband and I live in Canada, and often travel to shop in Erie Pennsylvania. In mid November we decided to treat ourselves to a two night stay at Great Tree Inn, as it wasn't too far away from Erie - but better yet because of the spectacular website that had drawn us in (result of stumbling across it rather than searching). Simply, we HAD to stay there! Wow! We were greeted warmly by Sam , and shown around the inn. Loved it all, and it was easy to get lost in the imaginings of the inn's history and the people , farmers, owners, and guests who had come and gone over the years of it's life. Our room, the Seventh heaven was just as the photographs had shown, we were not disappointed in any way. Breakfast was fab, hot coffee, juice classic bacon eggs, toast -- and Kie, our server, the ever cheerful gal, who is just as much a part of the whole Great Tree Inn experience as anyone or anything else. Our dinner served on the second night's stay was delicious, never had anything quite like it. Tasty. Wine flowing. Ambience. Great conversations with other guests, and later with Sam and Kie who had stories to share. It was an amazing. relaxing weekend. We were hooked, by the people, the inn and the little quirks that made this renovated farmhouse so appealing. After checking out we were able to chat with Louis who was letting the horses out to pasture. He's a giant of a man, an easy conversationalist, with a story telling gift. We left wanting more. On New Year's Eve we ventured back, stayed in the Old Country folk room - champangne and strawberries brought to our room just after checking in. It only got better after that, Sometimes, you stumble across a magical place, where everything is just right, where a beautiful black locust tree blocks a large window pane, and the world seems just right. Great Tree Inn was "all that" for us. Sam, Louis, and Kie, we wish you all the very best.
