The Chautauqua Institution has been called "summer camp for adults," but it's so much more than that. Before I retired, my colleagues couldn't believe I'd go on vacation to listen to lectures and take classes. But Chautauqua refreshes the heart, the soul and the mind. It's a nine-week summer season. I've never been able to go for more than three weeks at a time, but how wonderful those weeks are! Each week has a theme, and every Monday through Friday, there's a lecture in the morning on that theme. There's related programming; there are special courses you can take, there are recreational activities, there are cultural offerings -- all on a beautiful lake-side campus with 100-year-old trees, old buildings and lovely gardens.

My childhood memories of the Institution always seemed like a fairy tale. Our visit this year proved my memory was spot on. The beutiful gingerbread work on the houses (most built in the late 1800's), the views of the lake and the quiet streets (many blocked to vehicle traffic) were all perfect. We arrived while they were having a quilt show and in spite of the crowds, found plenty of quiet corners. A must see if you are in the area. History and beauty around every single corner!

My family tries to visit Chautauqua every summer as we enjoy the quiet, peaceful surroundings. We have always enjoyed the shows we have seen, especially Jersey Boys! We would love to see Jimmy Fortune formerly a Statler Bros in concert. The grandchildren have participated in band camps and performances at Chautauqua which has greatly influenced their lives, music playing an important part in their futures. What an opportunity!!!!! Thank you Chautauqua Institute.

Chautauqua has been a summer staple in my life since childhood. Stroll the grounds, visit the scale-presentation of Israel and surrounding mountains, take a cruise aboard the historic Chautauqua Belle. Lunch at the Athenaeum Hotel (built in the early 1900's) or spend the night if time permits. Chautauqua is unique in our history. Summer concerts in the open amphitheater are awesome.

We are fortunate to have this so near by. Many quality musical, educational, and famous performers come to this area because of Chautauqua.
