The Chautauqua Institution has been called "summer camp for adults," but it's so much more than that. Before I retired, my colleagues couldn't believe I'd go on vacation to listen to lectures and take classes. But Chautauqua refreshes the heart, the soul and the mind. It's a nine-week summer season. I've never been able to go for more than three weeks at a time, but how wonderful those weeks are! Each week has a theme, and every Monday through Friday, there's a lecture in the morning on that theme. There's related programming; there are special courses you can take, there are recreational activities, there are cultural offerings -- all on a beautiful lake-side campus with 100-year-old trees, old buildings and lovely gardens.
