We were very excited to have reservations to eat in the famous Athenium Hotel. As it turned out, there were very few people eating there that evening. The menu had only three choices for entrees - roast quail, pork, or some sort of fish. The presentation was elegant, but the portions were very tiny. For $69.00 each, we expected to be wowed! Our waiter was excellent, but in all, we were disappointed with our experience.

We stayed a week at the Athenaeum while participating in the Chautauqua Institute. Thankfully, our room was in the fully air conditioned annex portion of the hotel. (Parts of the hotel are not airconditioned.) The lakeside location is fabulous and the old veranda/porch is a wonderful way to revisit life of the late 1800's and early 1900's. There is no service of alcohol except in the main restaurant. The evening meals were quite good, but breakfasts and lunches (mostly buffets) were nothing spectacular. The staff -- consisting mostly of college-age summer employees -- is friendly, fresh-faced and helpful. If you are making your first visit for a week of programming at the Chautauqua Institute, the Athenaeum provides a central location and a glimpse of life from 100 years ago. Be warned: NY's high hotel taxes and a $50 per day "administrative fee" is going to raise the cost of a stay for a couple well above $600 per day (without counting tips and alcohol).

We are staying at the Athenaeum Hotel during a week-long visit to the Chautauqua Instituion. As a guest of the hotel, which is on the American plan, three daily meals are included in the price of the room. We are three nights into our stay at this point, and this review will focus on the dinners in the hotel restaurant, as outside guests are also welcome to dine here. The menu changes daily. The dinners are four courses, starting with a soup. It appears they have two choices each night - one cold, one hot. The soups thus far have been very good. The next course is a salad or other appetizer. All have been very good, with a few pleasant surprises. One appetizer surprise that comes to mind was a shrimp chorizo (bits of shrimp in the chorizo) that was very interesting and very tasty. The other two courses are the entree and dessert. There are a wide range of entrees to choose from, and all have been better than expected. Chef Warhol is not afraid to heat things up a bit. I like spicy food, but I have to say that last night's Cajun shrimp (over cheddar grits) was almost a bit too spicy for me. It was very good, but I suspect others might fiind it too hot. The first night the companion and I tried scallops and meat loaf - both were great. A beef short rib the second night was also excellent. Desserts have been okay, but we are underwhelmed. Some of the cakes have seemed a bit dry, and desserts that we expected to be served warm (e.g. souffle and creme brulee) are not. I understand that when you have to serve a large number of people in a short time frame, some things must be sacrificed, and I'm guessing that these desserts are made well ahead of time. I can't complain much. They've been good, but just a bit disappointing after some of the other pleasant surprises in the appetizer and entree courses. Service has also been great. We've had a few fairly young and inexperienced servers, but they've been very good and super nice. All in all, this place is a hit!

This is where we sent all our performers and speakers. They had a special table. It is a gorgeous, all wood hotel and I enjoyed my time there a few years ago when my father attended a lecture given in his name for his 75th birthday.

The mood of staying where Abe Lincoln and Thomas Edison and Franklin Roosevelt stayed, ate and addressed the audience in the next-door amphitheater. Rocking chairs along the porch, overlooking the Lake, dining in style, like an old movie.
