There are 4 reasons to go: Planetarium, Museum, Mansion and Theatre. Each is worth the trip, and together it's a real find.
The planetarium has excellent shows for both kids and adults. The projector is new and first rate. The entire venue has been refurbished. Worth a trip by itself. Shows are about an hour long.
The mansion was a summer cottage at which the Vanderbilts kept a full-time staff. You get an idea of how the other .00001 percent lived. Figure an hour in the mansion.
The museum houses a collection of the commodore's acquisitions over a lifetime of travel and exploration. Plan for an hour in the museum.
The theatre is a venue operated by the Arena Playhouse. It is the original carriage house converted to a small theatre (about 80 seats, I would guess) which has been producing plays on Long Island for many years. They moved to the Vanderbilt estate about 3 years ago. You'll have to Google their schedule to find the dates and program.
It's a wonderful place to visit for adults with or without kids. It's educational without the accompanying pain.
Time your visit depending on how much you plan to see.
