“4 reasons to go: Planetarium, Museum, Mansion, and Theatre”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

There are 4 reasons to go: Planetarium, Museum, Mansion and Theatre. Each is worth the trip, and together it's a real find.
The planetarium has excellent shows for both kids and adults. The projector is new and first rate. The entire venue has been refurbished. Worth a trip by itself. Shows are about an hour long.
The mansion was a summer cottage at which the Vanderbilts kept a full-time staff. You get an idea of how the other .00001 percent lived. Figure an hour in the mansion.
The museum houses a collection of the commodore's acquisitions over a lifetime of travel and exploration. Plan for an hour in the museum.
The theatre is a venue operated by the Arena Playhouse. It is the original carriage house converted to a small theatre (about 80 seats, I would guess) which has been producing plays on Long Island for many years. They moved to the Vanderbilt estate about 3 years ago. You'll have to Google their schedule to find the dates and program.
It's a wonderful place to visit for adults with or without kids. It's educational without the accompanying pain.
Time your visit depending on how much you plan to see.

“Visit old Europe & see how the other 1% lived during the Guilded Age.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

If it weren't for the rich doing so many incredible things with their money and then leaving their assets for all to enjoy, you'd never get to experience something that probably defies description. The mansion tour will leave you scratching your head about why someone would buy a mummy, but then it does make for an interesting tour. Can't get to Europe to visit a castle - experience one here! The Planetarium is Not the Heyden Planetarium. but then neither is the price & the kids all enjoy the star show as much as the adults. The museum filled with preserved fishy things was not for my taste, but then Jaques Cousteau has nothing on me either. Grounds are nice - I could have had a blast living here growing up as I'm sure the family did.

“Cool Planetarium”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

Very neat planetarium. Also visited the mansion. Sad that most of it was off limits. I wanted to see more! Good entrance price too.
Def see the planetarium show, but avoid during the school holidays since it gets super busy!

“Very impressive.”

The mansion tour was really interesting. Knowledgeable tour guide. Reasonable price for admission. There is plenty of things to see...enough to fill a day.
