we visited the ibhof in june for the annual induction weekend.the museum grounds consist of the museum itself and the event pavilion.the whole site is immaculately kept by the 200 or so volnteers that organise the weekend.the museum (entrance fee $9.50) displays a selection of world championship belts, gloves, robes, boots, trunks, handwraps etc from legends such as ali;dempsey, louis, buchanan, hagler, leonard nelson and basilio. the hall of fame wall features a plaque with the biography and photo of each inductee.there are several audio-visual stations showing classic fights.also featured is a collection of original fight posters and life-size fist castings.the event pavillion contains the gift shop and the ring that stood in 3 different madison square garden sites from 1925-2007.this ring held more championship bouts than any other ring in existance.the induction weekend is the best time to visit.this is a 4 day event featuring book signings, gala cocktail reception ,banquet of champions(at the oncenter complex in syracuse),night of the rising stars and much more.amongst those who attended this year were basilio, hagler, palomino, pryor, stracey.griffiths, breland, berto, paul williams, cintron, starling, junior jones, bute, leon spinks, referees christodoulou & bayliss, trainers steward & dundee, bert sugar, plus of course the 3 modern inductees, lennox lewis, brian mitchell & orlando canizales.all the fighters seemed to enjoy it as much as the fans and were more than ready to give their time for autographs, photos,or just to chat. the ringside lectures featured john h. stracey, mark breland, brian mitchell, bert sugar and billy backus.stracey also sang at the opening ceremony and the gala.he has a good voice.prior to the induction ceremony the parade of champions takes place through the village.the induction began under a clear sky.the speeches given buy the inductees clearly showed how much their inductions meant to them(these are available on u-t).orlando stole the show with his.just up the road is a great place to eat & drink - grazianos.this establishment summed up canastota-a great welcome and a pleasure to be there.there are only 2 places to stay in the viilage so some travelling will be needed (the boxers etc. and their families stay in these). we stayed in east syracuse which is about 20 miles away but this did not detract from our visit. the ibhof weekend is a must for all dedicated boxing fans.although i am fan of many sports boxing is my favourite and one of the reasons is the people you get to meet at events like this-fans as well as the fighters/trainers etc.the respect that the fighters had for each other will be one of the many lasting memories.do not hesitate to contact me for more details & stories!
