The Inn on the Lake

Traveling with our borzoi is always a bit of a challenge and a hit or miss experience. Though our hotel tastes run to the Ritz Carlton and Peninsula, we frequently find ourselves at a La Quinta or Quality Inn as a concession to our dog. On a recent trip from Toronto to NYC, we decided to stop in the Finger Lakes region on a whim. We left the highway to find Geneva, NY. After being turned away at the Hampton Inn and the lovely Ramada Inn right on the lake, we continued along the main road to check out the Microtel and Days Inn ( a recently rebranded Motel 6) which do accept pets. Neither option was what we had hoped to find so we continued to Lake Canandaigua where we were lucky enough to find the Inn on Lake.

The Inn's pet policy was limited (no water view rooms) to a standard room or a suite with a $50 difference in the price. We opted for a standard room because it had better natural light. The room was a nice size, the king size bed comfortable and the window actually opened to allow the fresh fall air in. Wifi was available in the room. The staff was very friendly and well trained. The lobby area offered complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day.

The grounds were beautifully kept with Adirondack chairs along the lake wall, a covered gazebo, outdoor pool and a cute lakeside patio bar where we spent the afternoon chatting with the locals. In addition, there was a lovely dining room and bar with outside patio service which offered the option of dock and dine.

All in all I would say this was a charming little retreat in a great town. A great break from a tedious journey. Will definitely return.

When we walked into the lobby, we noticed right away how dirty it was. It was August 2012. Our lakefront room had old dirty carpet. When my husband got out of the shower, he got water on the floor. I picked up a towel to dry it up, and the towel came back incredibly dirty. I went by the front desk on my way out and asked for the maid to come and clean my floor. While I was waiting at the desk, another woman was calling complaining about dirty dishes that had been outside her room door since yesterday. We went to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning. We waited a long while before a young girl with dirty purple finernails walked over, and with no other formalities, said, "are you having the buffet?" We asked for coffee while we decided. She brought that coffee, but subsequent refills were done by ourselves. I finally went looking for her and found her in another room, sitting with two other employees talking. I am unable to rate the service, since I did not get any. When we checked out, another man was at the front desk complaining about the dirt and the service. I had planned to tell them then, but the staff at the desk seemed to have their hands full. This place is old and dirty and the very very young people there do not seem to care. We were very disappointed, as it seemed that it once had a lot of charm.

My honey recently took me on an overnight "love" package at Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua, NY. We live very close by and had a lot of fun here nine years ago for a wedding so he thought it would be a nice birthday present for me. The food was TO DIE FOR!!!! Filet Mignon was like butter, the breakfast couldn't be beat! No complaints about the food. The rooms however left a bit to be desired. There are very few nice places to chose from on the Lake and I know that The Inn is booked solid, therefore I would expect that the management would put some of the money back into the rooms. Our doors in Suite 185 were marked up terrible. There were piles of dirty towels laying in the hall for hours on hours. The entry room in our suite always felt like there was heat on but we could not find out where it was coming from as it was not coming from the heat vents, however the only heater was in the bedroom. The entire suite could have used updating. It was somewhat sad to see such a beautiful place falling apart. The staff was exemplary! Our waitress on Saturday night, Holly, was pleasant, but our waitress on Sunday morning was so sweet! Sorry I didn't get her name! Very much went out of her way to make it an enjoyable experience.

Room Tip: 185 was run down

With its "right on the lake" location, and the charming downtown of Canadaigua within walking distance, you couldn't ask for a better spot to spend a weekend. The staff were helpful, the rooms clean & restaurant was great for breakfast. The rooms were a little dated, but the bed was comfortable all the amenities we needed were there. The views of the lake were fantastic!

We had a work retreat at The Inn and it was wonderful. My room was quiet and clean. Staff was very friendly and atmosphere was great. We walked down the Main street and shoped a little. Not many stores were open, but they were quaint.
Food was great at the resturant, bar serivce was fabulous.
Breakfast service a little slow, but we were not in a hurry.

The hotel is right on the lake where the boats doc, the LOCATION IS PERFECT. Easy walk into town with alot of resturants and pubs close by. We did some wine tasting at a few winneries in the area.
The staff working at the hotel are very nice and friendly. My husband and I have stayed previously and had a great time and once again we enjoyed our stay.
Love the "Sand Bar" at the hotel, right by the water and they have a band in the evening, its a fun place to go in the evening alot boaters and locals it is nice sitting by the water enjoying the music. They also have quite areas around with chairs along .....
The rooms could use a little updating but they are clean. It is worth paying the extra money for a lake view.
Thank you to all the staff who work hard to make everyones stay enjoyable!!!!!
We will be back again......

Room Tip: Worth the extra to get a lake view room

The Inn on the Lake is a nice hotel in a great location. It was clean and bug free. The staff were quite helpful as well, although not "over-the-top".

The dining room was something to be desired though. I would rate is a 3 out of 5. One of the items from the bar which we ordered, after being told we could have it, was out of stock. I admit that my wife and I are "foodies" and do enjoy excellent culinary experiences, and sadly this one was somewhat lacking. The wait staff in the evening was very good and accommodating.

Breakfast wait staff was another story. The food was greasy but ample. It took a long time before the waitress finally attempted a smile. She appeared quite bored with doing what she was doing, and that was unfortunate as it influenced how we felt about being there.

Check out was quick and easy.

Room Tip: Try to get a lake view room. A bit more money but worth it.
