“Beautiful Baby Shower”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2013

Went to a baby shower there in a private room. The servers were polite and the food was delicious, especially the egg plant. The room was comfortable and sat at least 50 people. We had additional food to take home. Really liked the place and we will return.

“A Shadow of Itself”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2013

We used to drive in from NJ to go here, going back to the days when it was just the old frame house with the single dining room, and once waited over 3 hours for a table. It WAS that good, but once Johnny died, the place overexpanded and went downhill fast. Still is OK-to-good, but not worth a trip anymore. Used to get great quantity & quality, even though the service was never great, but the last time I was there, nothing was the same. Still give you a lot of food, but they've expanded the menu (never a good idea, can't focus on your strengths if your chef is all over the map) and now it's all overkill. Too hit-or-miss for me now to go out of my way for, not worth the wait either. Too bad, it used to be good for both.

“Frankie & Johnnie's is Still Great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2013

Over 30 years ago I went to Frankie & Johnnies on Bronxdale Ave. for the first time. It was very good then and even better now. Hadn't eaten here in 30 years until this year. Have had dinner 3 times so far this year and every time the food was awesome. It is not only a restaurant where you get a lot of food for you money but the quality of the food is very good. I would strongly suggest avoid going on a Saturday. First time we went this year we had to wait for over a hour on a Saturday night and we had a reservation. They only accept reservations for parties of 10 or more. Been back 2 times since, on Sundays, and there was no wait at all. Service was very good even on the Saturday when the place was packed. But the major appeal is the food. Had the best fried ravioli in my entire life at F&P Pine. The meatballs are unusual. So good my niece who is not really into eating meatballs couldn't get enough of them and was raving about them for days. They were special. This is definitely a must for anyone who is a seafood lover. Great place if you are looking to go out for a large group and share. Highly recommend at least trying this place once in your life. You will likely want to go back.

“Used to be good”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2013

Now, I live within a walking distance from F &J and I go out a lot, so it is surprising that I haven't been there for 2 years.Things chnaged and for the worse. Food was sub par; the salad has gotten smaller and had fewer ingredients; the waitress was getting the order wrong and kept bringing us incorrect dishes. My friend ordered linguini with red, got the white and when the right one was finally delivered it was awful. The clams were the size of a human palm and tough. It was difficult to cut them with a knife. Wherever we go, linguini with clams is always served with little necks; they are tender and slide off the shell easily. F & J uses the chowders which obvioulsy are much cheaper and are totally inedible. Overall, it it was a very disappointing experience - with poor service (the waitress was very nice just paid no attention to what was being ordered) and inferior quality food. It might be another 2 years before I walk down the street to eat there. I want to state that prices are very reasonable so it was not a matter of money. It appears that since F & J has been concentrating on catering end of the business & large parties, the quality of food for the main dining room has been slipping. Just another average or even below average Morris Park Italian place. There are other much better and more authentic.

“It's all about the (tomato) sauce!!! (The best!!!)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013 via mobile

I hadn't been here in about 5 years. I wrote off the Pine in the dustbin of ultra-touristy destination for the "Olive Garden crowd" (people who eat dog food/Italian)..... But I down at the Botanical Garden, and said why not give it shot.
First, the atmosphere is lively. The bring out a complementary house salad. Nice touch. We started with fried zucchini. Nice portion. Then eggplant rolotini, and eggplant marinara. The pasta was al dente (not mushy). And the sauce. Wow! The sauce was fresh, and great. The best in the Bronx over the tourist traps on Arthur Avenue (Albanians posing as Italians selling terrible Italian food to Midwest hicks).
Pine Tavern sells jars of its tomato sauce to take home too. It's a classic!
