“Poe's Last Home”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

Poe Cottage was the writer's home from 1846 to his death in 1849 at age 40. It is a small cottage built around 1812 that is the only example of such buildings left in The Bronx. The cottage was recently restored, and a new visitor's center was built nearby, also in Poe Park. The cottage is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays and is administered by The Bronx County Historical Society. Poe fans will love it.

“Quaint”
Reviewed June 18, 2012

This is one of those small treasures that has watched history unfolding in its surrounding neighborhoods. Its almost as if Poe is a presence there writing some Bronx tales. Worth a visit. Ideal to combine it with a trip to some of the Beautiful Bronx's other sites. There are lots of eateries around, but I haven't visited any. Pizza or a sandwich from home are always good bets.

“A must for Poe enthusiasts!”
Reviewed June 16, 2012 via mobile

I really liked visiting the quaint cottage. A glimpse into the past and affordable -5 bucks. As a fan of Poe's literature and architecture, really enjoyed the small touches and maintenance of the structure - take your time and appreciate the details in decor and history. I easily combined this visit with valentine varian house by bainbridge avenue and van courtlandt manor by broadway

“I beg to differ....”

...with the previous 3 reviews. "Not much to see..." - sure, it's not the Metropolitan Museum or MOMA but it is the only house museum in New York City where you can get an idea of how a relatively poor family would have lived in the mid-1800s. It is also the place where one of America's greatest authors lived his final years and produced some of his most important work. Be sure to time your visit on a weekend during opening hours (Sat 10-4, Sun 1-5).

If you are not interested in Edgar Allan Poe or in historic houses then I agree about combining your visit with one to the Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, Little Italy in the Bronx or maybe Woodlawn Cemetery.

And, Joe, please don't scare people - it's really not a dangerous neighborhood.
