Wednesdays are freee or donation entry so they may be more crowded. Good place to take little children. You are also allowed to bring in a picnic (there are available picnic tables). Some of the attractions require an additional entrance fee. They are also in the process of building a tree-top adventure component. Lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes. When we went the tram/shuttle was closed (for the season but the sign mentioned the winter months). Strollers are a good idea for little kids as they do get tired from walking at the zoo.

Came here on the Friday of Labor Day weekend which turned out to be a very wise decision as the zoo was practically empty. Pulled right into the parking lot and parked close to the entrance. We were able to walk through all of the exhibits and see the entire zoo in just under six hours... we did move quickly and didn't spend a whole lot of time at any one exhibit. We could've easily spent twice as much time there had we stopped and read all of the signs and information presented.
Since I hadn't been here in a very long time and didn't intend to spend the whole day, my intention was to purchase just the general admission ticket. However, the girl at the ticket booth convinced me to purchase premium tickets which include unlimited access to all of the exhibits and amenities. Afterward, I wanted to thank her because once you get inside, you'll realize that all of the good animals and exhibits require the premium tickets to see them.

Some of our favorite exhibits were the Congo gorilla forest, Madagascar, polar bear, the 4D theater and tiger mountain. The Asia exhibit is very popular as well although not necessarily one of my favorites. It was the last thing we did that afternoon and was crowded by that time so we were not able to go on the monorail because the line was over an hour wait and we were running out of time.
They do have some food stands in a couple of locations all serving the same food… Your typical hot dogs hamburgers chicken fingers salads etc. I actually got a veggie wrap which was really quite good. It had fresh grilled vegetables with fresh mozzarella. Everything is overpriced but at least the quality was very good, better than you would expect. You can bring your own food in and eat it there as well which is certainly the less expensive option. Definitely bring water from home.
It was easily a $200 day. I probably should have looked harder for coupons or discounts beforehand but it was a last minute decision and not someplace we would go often.

1.HOW TO GET THERE by public transport from Manhattan.
BxM11 express bus. It goes along Madison Avenu every 30 vinutes and it will take 50 min to get to the Zoo.
Attention! You should have coins with you, because in the bus you can`t pay by bills (2.75 $)
This way the most comfortable coz the bus stops 100м from the Zoo entrance. After visiting Zoo you have to keep in mind bus departure time to Manhattan since the bus runs only 1 time in half an hour. It seemed uncomfortable to us and we went back by subway.

Subway. Take the red line #2 to Pelham Parkway. The metro station is a little further from the entrance than the bus stop, but you are not tied to the bus schedule, especially when traveling back. In any case, it is in 5-7 minutes walk.

TICKETS. Buy TOTAL EXPERIENCE TICKET (36,95 $) on the web site. This will allow you to get into and go to all the places that are paid extra. Besides you can get 10% discount.

THE ZOO. It has a huge territory and closes at 5 PM, thats why it makes perfect sense to go there in thу very morning.
# IMPORTANT TIP. There is a monorail in the Zoo (Wild Asia Monorail) which takes you to places that are not accessible to visitors in the usual way. If you arrive in the morning, go immediately there, otherwise you will stand in the queue 1-1,5 hours to make a 10-minute trip. You can see the rest animals after the train ride.
Also next to the monorail is Natural trek, where children will be interesting to climb.

You can closely see fur seals, birds, mice, lemurs, crocodiles, buffalo.
Many animals in the zoo are located in huge enclosures. For animals this is certainly good, but they are far away and it is almost impossible to consider them closely. Photographers need a telephoto lens.

Keep in mind that you will spend the whole day at the zoo. I personally liked the zoo in Vienna much more but In any case, it will be interesting for children.
