1.HOW TO GET THERE by public transport from Manhattan.
BxM11 express bus. It goes along Madison Avenu every 30 vinutes and it will take 50 min to get to the Zoo.
Attention! You should have coins with you, because in the bus you can`t pay by bills (2.75 $)
This way the most comfortable coz the bus stops 100м from the Zoo entrance. After visiting Zoo you have to keep in mind bus departure time to Manhattan since the bus runs only 1 time in half an hour. It seemed uncomfortable to us and we went back by subway.

Subway. Take the red line #2 to Pelham Parkway. The metro station is a little further from the entrance than the bus stop, but you are not tied to the bus schedule, especially when traveling back. In any case, it is in 5-7 minutes walk.

TICKETS. Buy TOTAL EXPERIENCE TICKET (36,95 $) on the web site. This will allow you to get into and go to all the places that are paid extra. Besides you can get 10% discount.

THE ZOO. It has a huge territory and closes at 5 PM, thats why it makes perfect sense to go there in thу very morning.
# IMPORTANT TIP. There is a monorail in the Zoo (Wild Asia Monorail) which takes you to places that are not accessible to visitors in the usual way. If you arrive in the morning, go immediately there, otherwise you will stand in the queue 1-1,5 hours to make a 10-minute trip. You can see the rest animals after the train ride.
Also next to the monorail is Natural trek, where children will be interesting to climb.

You can closely see fur seals, birds, mice, lemurs, crocodiles, buffalo.
Many animals in the zoo are located in huge enclosures. For animals this is certainly good, but they are far away and it is almost impossible to consider them closely. Photographers need a telephoto lens.

Keep in mind that you will spend the whole day at the zoo. I personally liked the zoo in Vienna much more but In any case, it will be interesting for children.

Our 2nd zoo visited in the New York area and was the best and certainly worth the money - lots to do!

BUT.
Dislikes: Quality of food leaves a lot to be desired; if you are thinking about trying the Chicken Caesar Salad, do yourself a favor and DON'T.
Another disadvantage of this zoo, lack of modern hand dryers in rest rooms. I can see not using paper towels but when I have to dry my hands on my pants, the current dryers are not doing their job.
Another disadvantage: I've been zoos in: San Diego, Chicago (Lincoln Park & Brookfield), Columbus, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, DC, Cleveland and even cape May NJ. The all around park cleanliness at these other zoos makes the Bronx Zoo look like a pig sty.
Likes: the animal enclosures and all around look of the animals is excellent. Good display of many varieties. The 4D movie and Nature Trek are worthwhile.
Will go back but I hope they clean up a bit more.

I hesitated to go on a Wednesday because I thought the park would be too crowded and out-of-control.
I'm glad I went against my instincts.

Was a little dated and felt run down. It's in a pretty location--but the animal enclosures are small and kind of sad. They also charge extra for all the cool exhibits. So--even on a free day you end up spending a fair amount of money. Best to buy the pass that includes the extras. Bathrooms were packed and filthy....
