“Lovely historic hotel , gorgeous setting”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Visted for three days in September for first time after hearing about this resort for Year's. The hotel is lovely and sits on beautiful Lake George. The staff was friendly and accommodating, upgrading our room upon request as a preferred guest. There are several activities to take advantage of , a large gym, multiple swimming pools, a rec center, tennis courts, boat rentals, golf and spa. Some of the restaurants were closed as it was just past labor day, but we did eat in three of them throughout our stay. I did not give this an Excellent rating as I feel the resort is off by a step or two. Service in restaurants could have been better, and although we were upgraded to a larger room in the main hotel, the room was a bit dated. The hotel was clean and the grounds well kept.

We have been to the Sagamore at least five times and the difference between last year and this year was significant. We arrived at 1 or 2 o'clock and could't check in until 4. The gym area had a leaky ceiling and no attendant to bring towels and refresh the bathroom. Its a shame because its such a beautiful setting. The food was still good but at these prices management will have to get their act together for me to come back again.

We stayed (with our infant daughter) at the Sagamore for four nights in August. We stayed in one of the lodge rooms, which were down from the main hotel. Although the room was nothing special, the bed was very comfortable and the linens were wonderful - so, we slept well. The bathroom was small, but had been recently redone and was immaculate. Do I think the room was a $400+ night room? Sure...you're paying for the grounds and amenities - it's a wonderful place for families with a lot of activities and things to do outside of your room. We ate off the property the first two days, but after some disappointing meals we stayed on site the rest of our trip. The restaurants were good and even the poolside food was great. Bottom line? The Sagamore is pricey. The lodge rooms are nothing to write home about. But, I would definitely go back.

The view of Lake George from the hotel property is gorgeous and the primary reason to stay here. The service is very good in most cases and the dining options provide good quality and variety for a price, though I would not consider it a dining destination.

Just be sure to read through some of the prior reviews and understand that the resort caters to families with kids and that most of the activities are geared to them. However, there is a very good spa and nice fitness center for adults. Generally things quiet down after 8:00pm and if you want to enjoy a drink under the moonlight on the terrace it can be a very relaxing and romantic setting.

Also, know that if you are staying in the lodges and not the hotel, most of the rooms face the parking lot. If you make your reservations online, this is noted, but not very clearly. The lodge rooms are very basic hotel rooms with thin walls and the heavy metal doors of neighboring rooms are so extremely loud that it sounds a little like an old college dorm.

The setting is beautiful and the facilities great for a family getaway. Fortunately for us the weather cooperated and we had a wonderful 4 day multi-generation family vacation. The hotel was filled with families - definitely not the place to go during a school holiday if you don't have children. The restaurants were well run and efficient. Unfortunately the front desk staff and housekeeping were below par. We booked rooms with lake views only to find the lake obscured by trees - what we really had was a seasonal lake view! We were told several times when we made our reservation that the breakfast plan included the children - only to be told by the front desk that it did not. When we brought these matters to the attention of the staff, an adjustment in our rate was made. But why did we have to waste time on our vacation going over something that should be clear to all!
I think the facility has great potential but not worth the money!

Room Tip: Try to get a lodge room in building 2 or 3

But now its getting dirtier - and the spa redo is an example. Four Seasons massage prices ($ 188 with gratuity for 75 minutes) with Motel 6 level facility. Over the winter they did an "overhaul" - and the result is poorer than what they had. Same space above the indoor pool, but they tried to squeeze the ladies salon and nail facility into it (this had been on the other wing of the main hotel building). So even more cramped and poorly laid out with poor interior design. In the men's "new" locker room, there are less lockers, no bench or island to sit on by the lockers to help when changing or putting something down. One stool that is where you walk in so useless and if you sit on it no one can pass. The tile is cheap looking and the lighting fixtures are OK - but the light and the bulbs are horrid. No sense of kelvin scale so it's lit like a fluorescent lit BRIGHT FACTORY FLOOR - horrid. Only 2 showers now, instead of 3, and while those are spacious, not a single hook to hang your robe or towel. Nothing! The whirlpool is gone, just sauna and steam, also small. And the "redone" massage and therapy rooms while nice and more appropriately lit again have paper thin non-insulated walls so you hear conversation in the hall and around you. The beige weave thistle like mat floor in the "hallway" to all the massage rooms is dirty and smells - wrong floor choice, wrong color. Really unappetizing before a massage.

As some reviews have noted, the new management the last 4 years has added some good features (outdoor pools, lots of chairs down on the docks), but its simply not well run, clientele tends toward the loud and inconsiderate with unruly kids, restaurants mixed results food wise - sometimes good, sometimes not - but when good too.

Only recommendation is lunch on a quieter weekday down by the docks in early June or September, otherwise, better options almost anywhere.

First time here, but have visited the Lake George area and stayed in many places over the past 60 years. The Sagamore is a Beautiful place. I found it very clean, but I did not use the indoor pool or the jacuzzi. Stayed in the Historic Hotel. I loved the "oldish" decor especially the old time, black and white photos of the Sagamore from years ago in the room and all over the Hotel hallways. Beautiful marble bathrooms, although the doorway was a little awkward. But it's an old building. Food ranged from mediocre to excellent. Ate in the main dining room, Mr. Brown's pub and the Lake House. While sitting on the "Beach" area to enjoy the sun, the wait service was great to fair depending upon the person who was assigned to service that area. My major disappointment was the amount of children there. With the price you pay for the rooms I did not expect so many families vacationing there. The "quiet adult area" was right next to the indoor pool and the doors are open, so the screams of the kids just echo out to the patio area that was designated adults only, and some families brought their children to this area anyway. So go to experience the Sagamore, I would still recommend it. The town of Bolton Landing is just a half mile walk from the Sagamore, where you can shop and also try other restaurants. Very nice that Chic's marina has a concession stand on the property so you can rent a boat right there.
