Boathouse Bed and Breakfast A Lake Castle Estate on Lake George
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 4, 2013

This is a must see on the Lake! My husband and I had our best vacation yet here at The Boathouse. It is both charming and sophisticated, and Joe and Patti could not be more gracious hosts. Patti cooks up some mean breakfasts, so bring some stretch pants to wear home! The house is immaculate, for those of you who are clean freaks, like me! Book early - they sell out fast. And, enjoy!

Room Tip: We loved the Isabella Suite!

My wife and I recently stayed at this waterfront B&B. This is a very upscale property and is very clean and well run. The rooms are beautifully furnished and the location is prime waterfront. Joe and Patti go out of their way to provide with a very good breakfast. Highly recommend this B&B on Lake George, NY.

Room Tip: I think any room here is a good choice.

I have never been a huge fan of the Lake George area. It seemed the choices were either the mass-market luxe of the Sagamore or touristy motels. But then we found the Boathouse B&B. what a place. The house is gorgeous, the rooms are comfortable, the beds are great, the view is incredible, and the breakfasts are nothing short of gourmet.

Joe and Patti are warm and gracious hosts. We felt at home from the moment we walked in, and our 3 nights there were terrific.

We'll definitely be back, and now there's no question where we'll stay.

Room Tip: The Reis Suite has the best view.

We booked the "Boathouse" for a retirement celebration with 14 close friends. From the moment we arrived, we knew this was a very special place to spend a weekend honoring our friend who retired after 30 years of business success. Renee was the perfect hostess showing us our beautiful rooms and "answer book" (as she calls it) with everything you need to know about the B&B and things to do in the area.

We spent most of our free time on the Grand Porch chatting and laughing about good times over the years. Each morning the owners, Joe and Patti, served a super delicious three course breakfast in the Great Room. Two of my favorites were the homemade Frittata with veggies and goat cheese and three berry greneda - a frozen delight -Yummy! In the Great Room, we took a few moments to browse family photographs which represent the Boathouse history and memories of their family. Be sure to watch the video on their website - awesome.

A special option for guests of the B&B is a boat ride around beautiful Lake George on "Miss Boathouse" (add'l cost). Joe (the owner) shares his knowledge of the Lake and made our stay even more memorable. The B&B is a short walk into the town of Bolton with unique shops and numerous restaurants to stop for cocktails and conversation. Our retirement dinner was at The Sagamore Resort and they offer a complimentary shuttle service to and from the B&B.

While organizing this special event, months prior to our stay, the owners Joe and Patti were very responsive to my email inquiries which I very much appreciated. Every guest was very impressed with the accommodations (including the 600 count sheets in every room) and we highly recommend making memories on the lake at The Boathouse.

I have been to many B&Bs. I have visited the Lake George region over forty times. I know what to expect from both.
When we made the reservations more than nine months in advance, we were required to leave a two nights deposit for a three nights stay. This is not consistent with our experience. I should have known better. When we registered, we were asked to sign several documents (all protecting the owners, not the “guests”).
The Boathouse Bed and Breakfast is a beautiful stone building, situated on Lake George. The view from the room is breathtaking. Even though it is a couple of hundred feet from the noise and smell of gas of a marina we found this to be a minor distraction. The room itself was attractive and clean. The bed was very comfortable. I am cognizant that the rooms of most B&Bs are retrofitted. However, the bathroom was intolerably small. I have seen larger “heads” in boats. There wasn’t room for personal hygiene.
What really turned us off; however, were the signs and rules. I felt them to be condescending and unwelcoming. Most of them were about common sense. Examples of signs in and around the room include “…Turn off the television, lights and air conditioning [of which we had no control] when leaving.” “No smoking room.” “Please no smoking on the porch.” “If the weather looks inclement, please close all your window and doors until the threat of rain has past.” In the bathroom there was a sign about towels that stated (amongst other things) that “Using towels more than once helps. We can save the use of laundry detergent and water with your cooperation.” This is a nice thought, especially for someone who is environmentally conscious. I doubt that this is the intent. The best sign was “Please do not flush [amongst other things] excess toilet paper down the toilet”. I am surprised that there wasn’t a sign that told us to use one ply at a time.
And then we opened a binder in the room which we soon referred to as “The Book of Rules”. A sampling of some of these rules included, “Please do not run the air conditioner with the windows and doors opened”. Gee, I didn’t know that. “…If you are the last to leave the porch or your room or you turned on a reading light…kindly turn off the lights when you are finished.” “Turning your refrigerators on max. cold may cause your food and drink to freeze” “NO CIGARS please, no exceptions. If at any time we smell smoke in the restricted areas there will be an automatic $300 room cleaning fee added to your credit card kept on file AND you could be asked to check out early.” Yes, I get it, you don’t want smoking on your property and I agree, but just stating “This is a non-smoking establishment” would suffice.
Breakfast is “…served promptly at 9:00AM”. Very true, but every other B&B I have stayed at had a range of time for breakfast. “Breakfast is served family style and is chef’s choice.” Well it certainly isn’t guest’s choice. The breakfast we had was more like a three course dessert. While some might like it, it was too rich and sweet for our tastes with absolutely no choice. That might work for the owners, but not the guests.
If I wanted to be controlled, I would enlist in the army. If you can go the extra money, go to the Sagamore. If you read the reviews, you will see that the reviewers with more experience disliked this establishment. This sould be a bed and breakfast, not bed and rules and dessert.

We thank you for your comments and we are sorry to hear that you were so disappointed with us and your bed and breakfast experience. We do however feel we must respond to your points and comment on them as well.

As an experienced B&B traveler that you state you are; you would know that all bed and breakfasts are different. We are not the same in style, food, and policies, etc. We each have our own particular niche and that is what makes us all so special. Bed and Breakfasts are generally someone’s home that has been turned in to a bed and breakfast and you are right, most are retrofitted to do so. We try and make our property and rooms as perfect as we can. Our rooms are not hotel rooms they are bedrooms that you would find in a home. Our bedrooms are standard sized rooms that have ample room and all with private baths. Some baths in our home were put into the rooms to accommodate our guests so they would have their own bathrooms. They may not be the biggest, but they are far bigger than boat heads. Our lake view suites are the larger rooms.

Our deposit policies are listed on our web site, these are not a surprise so if you were not comfortable with them you had the choice not to book with us, and we did get them from other B&B’s. Just because this isn’t what you’re used to, doesn’t make it wrong for us to do it that way. All paperwork that you sign upon check in is the same paperwork you sign when you check into a major hotel or bed and breakfast. That is to protect us both so you are aware of what your charges are and what are policies are so there are no awkward situations or surprises.

I am not sure why you would feel unwelcome with signs that direct you or ask to help us out. We cannot be in every place at all times and we certainly are not going in to your rooms after you to shut off a light or close a window. We do hope that you respect our home and if you did like most people do turning off a light or closing a window if it is raining really isn’t such a big deal. Our signs are taken from other accommodations that we have visited or are familiar with. They are there to make your stay more comfortable and to help out. There are no smoking signs in the rooms and on the outside areas. We have them there because although we state that we are a nonsmoking property on our website, guests have still tried to smoke in the rooms and on the property. We do have a book that has frequently asked questions and tells you how to work things in the rooms. You are told most of this upon check in but sometimes it is forgotten and you have something to refer to should we not be around. Most of the times we are on property but sometimes we are not so hopefully that information in those books will help you out in that case. Using your towels more than once sign is in every accommodation and that is a suggestion not an order. If you would like new towels, we will by all means give them to you. We take pride in our lake and surroundings and we want to keep them that way for many years to come. Using a towel again or recycling is not an uncommon practice. It is insulting for you to say that this is not a practice of ours. Flushing things down the toilet is another sign we have seen in many public bathrooms and accommodations. Many a time we have had an emergency visit from the plumber because something was flushed that shouldn’t have been. Your system and pumps may be able to take that kind of abuse but ours does not.

Our breakfasts are a sweet type one day and a savory type the other day. It is made in a family style way and is the chef’s choice. It is served at 9 am and being prompt helps. If we hold up breakfast for you everyone suffers because it will be over cooked or cold. Some people want to get on with their day; they could have a tee time or an appointment so the 9am time seems to be the best time to have breakfast here at the Boathouse. When you are checked in you are asked of any dietary issues. Although, we mostly can only accommodate a medical dietary concern, we still do everything we can to accommodate a guests preference. We sometimes can change that ahead of time if we know it ahead of time. All you had to do was ask us.

We have provided a sense of home, warmth and serenity at the Boathouse Bed and Breakfast. When a guest checks out, their comment to us is that they love how we make them feel, like a family member that has come home or a good friend that has come to visit, aside from all our “little imperfections.” We want this house and property to give you the same sense of peace and warmth as it has given to us. We have tried to make this bed and breakfast as perfect as we possibly can for all who step through our doors. We always have said, one can never have a bad day on the lake.

From start to finish our stay here was perfection. Situated on the water (literally), the boat house is simply charming. The hosts Joe and Patti were very accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable without being intrusive. Patti's cooks delicious 3 course breakfasts, and Joe assists in serving it. We brought our own boat and had a wonderful, protected slip right outside our door. If you don't have your own boat Joe has a gorgeous Hackercraft, that he offers daily tours with, weather permitting. If you don't have your own boat it would be a definite "to do". We stayed in the Adirondack Suite, not in the original boathouse but with it's own private balcony. Very quiet and private, but just steps away from the boathouse itself. My husband and I have been coming to Lake George for years and have to say we think the magnificent covered porch is one the finest places you will find on the lake. Have booked two more stays there this season, and are looking forward to our return.

This bed and breakfast has taken over the #1 spot on our personal B&B list. Let's talk about the inn first - rooms were beautifully decorated, bed was comfortable, the bed sheets, soft as butter. Then there is the porch! You can sit on this porch with a good book or your laptop for hours. Situated on the water, you can simply watch the world go by as you relax and relax and relax.

If all this isn't enough to make you get to the Boathouse, let me tell you about the breakfasts - 3 courses, some days "sweet"; some days "savory", every day DELICIOUS!

There's plenty to do throughout the area, no matter what the weather.

Oh, and if you decide to take my advise and spend some time at the Boathouse - you'll hear about a boat ride from Joe - I highly recommend it!

Joe, Patti and Renee have left nothing undone in this B&B from soup to nuts.

Room Tip: When we made our reservation, Allaya (without a water view) was the only room available in our price...
