Boathouse Bed and Breakfast A Lake Castle Estate on Lake George
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 4, 2012

I recently stayed at the Boathouse Bed & Breakfast again....and again, I left happy and rejuvenated. I have been visiting the Boathouse for several years, and each time I go there, I am in awe of the accommodations, the views, and most especially Patti and Joe's warmth and attention to every little detail. There are not many places that find their way into your heart, but this one does....I am already planning my next visit!

Pros
The boathouse itself is beautiful and the hosts are friendly. Breakfast each morning is delicious (made by the Mrs) and the common space and porch are beautiful. The location is great, allowing guests a five minute walk to the Sagamore (where you can use their fitness facilities!) or five minutes in the other direction to the main road of Bolton Landing with its shops and restaurants.

Cons
The room you choose truly defines your stay. Unfortunately, I stayed in one of the two smallest rooms (Allayla) with a bathroom that was across the hall... sure it's private, but it's not ensuite and I wish that had been clear on the website. The room itself was clean but quite small. What's more... the walls between the rooms are paper thin. I heard every conversation, every cough... not exactly the rest and relaxation I had hoped for. Sadly, we paid $200+/night... shell out for the larger rooms (which look lovely) or stay somewhere else.

We find ourselves rarely thanking our travelers for their comments and suggestions for other Trip Advisor travelers to review. Let us take this time to do just that. We appreciate our guests and we feel that without them the Boathouse Bed and Breakfast would not be such a success. We have met many wonderful guests over the years and we hope when you leave that you felt like you had just visited your friends or family.

We would like to address the cons that this traveler has commented on. The Allayla room is a standard size room. The walls are thick, made of lathe and plaster and are as sound proof as we can make them. The Allayla Room’s bath is right outside of the room literally within an arm’s reach. It was the original master bath of the house when this home was built in 1912. The bath is private and quite spacious and well stocked with amenities as well as our rooms are-We hope to think that if you forgot something traveling it is there for you and more often than not it is something that you would have never thought we would have provided being a small inn. The home is unique and our hope is that you feel the price was worth the amount paid by all we offer you and not just based on the room chosen. We have priced the rooms by size and view to accommodate all budgets
.
We hope that this traveler will come and visit us again. If you were not completely satisfied with the Allayla Room hopefully next time another room or suite will be much more to your liking.

Boy have we found a little piece of heaven on earth. We wanted to find a place to celebrate our 8th anniversary that was peaceful and beautiful. We love the water so when we found the Boathouse on the internet we just knew it was the place for us. The Boathouse is directly in the water of Lake George, you can't get any closer than that. The property is immaculately kept with flowers everywhere. The docks have rocking chairs on every corner, the lawn has chaise lounges, and then on one spot there are Adirondack chairs. You can find a peaceful and private spot or if you want to chat with the other guests, the front porch is the place.

We stayed in the Isabella's Suite. Joe, one of our hosts, said that it was a romantic room and considered their honeymoon suite-very romantic indeed. Every amenity that you can think of was in that suite. The bed was most comfortable and lush, love the sheets. The bathroom sported a very large shower and two person jacuzzi.

Breakfast was great and gourmet. Patti and Renee did a wonderful job. Part of the enjoyment of a bed and breakfast stay is the conversation and the meeting of new friends. Joe, Patti and Renee were a great help in finding things to do and places to eat. In fact you really never have to drive for shopping or dining, you are with in walking distance to about 7 great restaurants and some local shops.

After breakfast we took the boat trip on the Miss Boathouse. Joe is very informative about the facts and history of Lake George. We then went over to the Sagamore Hotel, again within walking distance from the B&B, for a massage. The Boathouse has a membership at the hotel that gives you free access to the fitness center and with that pass you also get 10% off of you dining. We did dine there on our anniversary night, great place to celebrate something special.

We use Trip Advisor when we travel and depend on past guest experiences to help make the right choice. We have found that this Bed and Breakfast is a five star experience, with five star accommodations and five star hosts. If you are looking for that special spot to celebrate any occasion this is the place to go. We have no doubt that your experience will the same as ours.

Room Tip: The lake view suites are pricey but worth the money spent.

What a find for us all the way from OZ. Location & outlook perfect. We stayed in a suite 17-20 Sep. It was beautiful and spacious. Went out on Joe's boat on a magnificent day. Only way to see the lake. Hosts were very friendly. It's far from cheap but was a wonderful treat.

Hurricane Irene hits the day we are to arrive to celebrate our anniversary. Calls from our local legislators called a "state of emergency" and ordered us to stay indoors and not to drive. Impossible to get to the B&B that day. Joe & Patty, innkeepers were in Florida and had no idea of the actual situation as Bolton Landing and Lake George was virtually a ghost town with no power. We told them of our situation and Joe basically said "Too bad". You booked the room, we're open, if you don't come, you lose the night and the money you paid for it". We asked him to be fair, told him we would be risking our lives if we drove, the calls from our local legislators. He didn't care at all. We set off the next day amid floods and downed trees on the highways. Unbeknownst so us, we had received an email from him that day stating “Do not come to the B&B, we have no power”, We found this email on the way up on our Ipad and we called and the answering service stated: "DO NOT COME", WE ARE NOT OPEN". Joe and Patti via phone (when they deplaned from Florida) told us to "Go somewhere for 2 hours" until they got to the B&B to see what was going on. We were 10 mins away, where were we to go with no power anywhere? Joe said "The first thing you gotta do is get rid of your dog and into the kennel" (verbatim) yet we spent 3 days watching their two dogs run all over the property and listening to them bark and yap. We could not leave our dog at our usual boarder at home as there was no power, so we all drove up together. Renee, the manager told us they had to close on Sunday as they had no power and people went home. It was becoming overly stressful, and we didn't even know if we had a room yet. We arrived and the power went off as we stood in the dining room. It was a shaky situation. We tried to talk to Joe and Patty, both were adamant that we would not be credited for the hurricane day, nor given another day gratis or add a day on to the end of our stay. We called other hotels and they did give refunds and credits. Power was off for a week in some areas. These two individuals/innkeepers are interested in revenue, not hospitality or doing the ethical and right thing when running a business, a B&B that is supposed to accomodate people especially during a state of emergency! We were aghast as most people are when we tell the story. He explained how "hurt" they would be financially if they returned our money yet out of the same mouth came boastful conversations about his three other homes, his boats and what a wonderful life they lead.

Our room was adequate however the ear plugs that are left on the night stands are absolutely necessary due to the constant noise of traffic passing on the road to the Sagamore and people walking by after a night out on the town in Bolton Landing. Their barking dogs that lived below us and ran all over the property barking and unleashed did not lend to a pleasant environment. Not everyone appreciates dogs running about when you are trying to relax. It was very very noisy and very very early in the morning and late at night with traffic, people and their dogs. Our floor was wet and a towels were placed in strategic areas. Patty is an ice queen and very unfriendly, just tries to play the part and Joe has no part to play, he just is an arrogant, selfish, unethical man. I have never written a review like this, but they are very deserving of it.

The food was horrifyingly unhealthy - freeze dried B&B food either overly sugared or overly salted. We made the best of our trip, had fun anyway but would not recommend this place ever to anyone. I think Lola, my pup had better accommodations and service at The Pooch Palace. . Go to The Sagamore which is exquisite, first class real hotel with amazing views and where they make you feel welcome and the service is immaculate or Erlowest where we dined and saw every exquisite room, which puts this B&B to shame.

After some less than appropriate communications with this specific reviewer and although we are disappointed to see a negative review posted, we also are not surprised by this reviewer’s comments. As much as we feel very badly that they chose not to travel for whatever their reasons, we were still open and running and didn’t close down the bed and breakfast.

Instead of going point by point, let us just say as owners of this unique property, we strive along with our staff to provide an enjoyable experience from the moment you call us to book a reservation until the day of check out. Our property inside and out is immaculately kept, the staff is friendly, and the breakfasts are hardy and delicious ready to start you off on your day whether it be to visit and see the area attractions or just to sit on our front porch, docks or grounds to take in the beauty of the lake and mountains. As efficiently as this business is run, we look into ways of always improving whenever we can.

We do have our policies posted on our website. Because of those policies, we feel that is one of the many secrets of our success. We travel as well and do purchase trip insurance. In this time of more weather related issues, we feel it is a good investment for not a lot of money.

We do not allow pets here because we do have two adorable miniature dogs already on property. They do have access to the property at times, but not the common areas or rooms. We have and continue training them so they are well behaved. They are never unsupervised. If we feel they are disturbing guests in any way they are removed and taken inside our owner’s quarters. Many times our guests are looking for them to enjoy because they are so lovable and friendly.

We believe that our guests are savvy travelers and can see through what is factual and what is fiction. We welcome you to come and enjoy our bed and breakfast as you can see that many travelers have already by the glowing reviews posted. Our goal is to try and make all our guests feel like they are visiting friends or family. Should you have any questions or concerns about anything here at the Boathouse Bed and Breakfast, please give us a call or email.

We always enjoy our family vacations in Lake George in the summer, but REALLY look forward to our weekend getaway (w/o kids) in the fall! The Boathouse B&B is just the place for such an escape. Joe and Patti are awesome hosts; they made us feel quite welcome. What adds to the atmosphere is the feeling that so many memorable occasions and gatherings have occurred there. There are pictures of their beautiful family all around inside the house - the property is THE gathering place for their get togethers in the off-season. And it's easy to see why...it's the ideal location on the lake - so scenic (esp. to view the gorgeous fall foliage) and close to most anything you'd want to do any time of year.

The B&B is run very efficiently (almost effortlessly it seems). The morning breakfast gathering will jumpstart your day: great food, socialize with other guests, and enjoy the "Patti and Joe" show (she cooks, he serves, and there's humorous exhanges along the way).

We didn't get to go on Joe's boat (a stunning Hacker btw) tour because the weather didn't cooperate, but we're sure it would have been terrific. Maybe when we're back next year!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Ciara room - it was the only room available when we booked our trip. It was probab...

My husband and I spent a long weekend here (Sept. 15th thru 18th) and just loved it. The accommodations are great - with fireplaces in each room, refrigerator, coffeemaker and each room is decorated in it's own "theme". We stayed in the "Isabella Sweet" and the bed was extremely comfortable and I'm sure the beds in the other rooms are just as comfortable.

Joe and Patti serve a 3-course breakfast each morning at 9am and all three days it was delicious! They are the owners and they are extremely gracious and very welcoming. They are very helpful when trying to decide on things to do during your stay. Their two staff members couldn't be nicer.

My husband and I will definitely be booking a return trip!
