Great collection of old boats; well worth a detour in itself. Also fine reps of how people lived once upon a time. Loved the private RR car. Great layout, nice staff. Beautiful setting. Out of the way, but well orth a detour.

Care for a course on the Adirondacks? This is your place. The Adirondack Museum bills itself as a place for an epic visit, and it isn't kidding. We stopped for about three hours to see it, and then had a leisurely lunch overlooking Blue Mountain Lake, which is spectacular.

This has buildings big and small spread over a large campus. Sample subjects are boating, logging, recreation, and transportation. You can climb a fire tower and see a luxury railroad car.

It's all very well done, telling the story of the region in relatively complete fashion. There's lots of material on what the 19th century residents did to live, and to be fair that may not be gripping to some. In other words, I'm not sure if kids will have the patience to spend three hours here. But they will certain learn some things if they do.

This museum's wonderful combination of outdoor exhibits and indoor displays gives visitors the opportunity to both visualize and understand what life was like in the Adirondacks of yesteryear. The history of logging--from the business end to the way of life for loggers--is displayed through artifacts, videos, photographs, personal mementos, along with explanations by museum curators and experts. The boats, carriages, and even a restored luxury railway car are strikingly beautiful. My daughter and I particularly enjoyed going through the Adirondack house that is filled with furniture made out of materials directly from the northern woods. A number of buildings house the exhibits and the park-like setting provides the perfect atmosphere for a glimpse into the history of a fascinating region. An added bonus is the lovely gift shop that has a wide array of Adirondack-related items and books.

What a gem of a regional museum! Terrific displays putting all things Adirondack into perspective - the natural landscape, the history of logging, the camps, transportation. Favorites - the life sized and very early Smoky the Bear, the ornate and beautifully restored private rail car, and the very informative and visceral display on the dangerous but important logging industry which made the Adirondacks so important for for generations.

We just spent about 2 hours at the Adirondack Museum and it wasn't long enough, but we arrived mid-afternoon, so we did the best we could. this is a very well presented museum showcasing the Adirondacks and all its different facets- forestry industry, boating, horses and transportation, art and so on. I'm not a fan of boats per se, but seeing the beautifully hand-crafted canoes etc is almost like viewing pieces of art. I also enjoyed all the examples of rustic furniture and the rustic cabins. There is a lot to see- and it's all pretty interesting. I highly recommend a visit, even if you have to drive a bit
