“Good value for a nice get-away weekend”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

Could be called faux "roughing it". Situated at the base of an amazing and hikeable Catskill mountain. Great location if you looking for some mildly challenging mountain hikes. Great place if your bringing your dog(s). The pool is refreshing and the environment is friendly and casual.

Based on the other reviews and pictures, I'm sure this is a LOVELY place. Sadly I can't say for sure if that is the case. When we called to confirm our reservation, the man who answered the phone (owner? employee?) was completely rude. He answered the phone saying "why are you calling?". Never have I encountered a place of business answering the phone like that, no matter what the time! We called the published business phone number at 10:01 PM and the confirmation we had said they were open until 10. We hoped we'd catch someone still there... As unpleasant as the phone call was, it's best we talked to Mr. Sunshine because they didn't have our reservation, nor would he look up our confirmation number (past his bedtime, you see...). He was so rude and unprofessional and I'm relieved we took our business elsewhere. I'd recommend you do the same.

Back in the 70's when Bob first got the place I hunted there 3 years in a row and bagged a deer every year. I got my heaviest buck to this day there....he was a 7 pointer and dressed out at 192lbs. The place was great and Bob and his wife were great hosts. Bob would probably remember me as the guy with the home videos that brought out the whole town including the whole fire dept. It was something at that time that only very few people had a video camera and they got a great kick out of it seeing themselves on TV. The years have passed and now I have my own log cabin with 50 acres on the very top of a mountain about an hour away. No more 4 hour trips to the top anymore...lol I enjoy our place every time we get a chance to get to go up since we live on long island. My times at cold brook are great memories. We went there this afternoon and it has been 30 years since my last stay there, and I was looking for Bob then I went on here and saw that he had sold it. At 61 years young I still have fond memories of this great place. Stay well in retirement for the second time. Regards, Jim

This place is great for both families and those seeking private time with someone special. We stayed in cabin 1 which was close to the swimming pool and office. The lodge is under new management and is undergoing a face lift, which we think is much needed. Brad and Stu (dog) are always around to chic chat and guide you to the fun stuff to do in the area. We took our dog (yes, this place is very pet friendly). We did some hiking right in the back on the mountain. Our family 2 boys (10-12) and dog, had so much fun that we did the hike twice. Brad recommended it, and boy were we extremely happy that we did. We swam with our dog, in the stream after the hike; which was very refreshing. The restaurant and bar at the lodge was not in operation at the time. We got to play some pool, badminton, volleyball and swimming for our three days there. This place is a gem but really need some TLC. Brad, one of the owners, told us that they are working on updating and remodeling the cabins. There were some damages done to the property by hurricane Irene. This can seen in many areas other than Big Indian. Despite all, we will be visiting this place again in August. Its perfect location, ambience and lots to do, it's well worth the trip and every penny. It's not expensive and I highly recommend this place for families and those looking for private time or rekindling.

Room Tip: The pool is deep, 8 feet on the deep end so please take floatation devices for kids who do not know...

We just returned from a two-day stay at this location. This place has some exceptional characteristics and lots of potential and once the new owners have more time to make improvements and add some final touches this place will really be superb.

We used the lodge's online reservation system to book our stay. After sending our reservation through their system we received a personal response within 24 hours saying that our reservation was accepted and giving us more information regarding our arrival.

After arriving at our cabin we were greeted by Brad and his dog Stu. Brad gave us the rundown of how the property was laid out, showed us around our cabin and told us where the nearest convenience/liqour/grocery store was located in case we needed anything. Stu was a good dog. He checked us out and let us pet him but wasn't overbearing at all (as some dogs can be). Brad and Stu came by a couple more times during our stay to make sure everything was ok and to see if we needed anything.

This property consists of six cabins/cottages and a main lodge with a bar and restaurant. I don't think the bar and restaurant are open yet but to fair we can't say for sure because we didn't go check. There is a pool on the property with a deep end of 8 ft and a shallow end of 2 ft. The water was clear and clean. However, some of the decking around the pool needs improvement. Next to the pool is a volleyball and badmitton court and I noticed there were balls, birdies and racquets provided. Behind the cottages there is a large open area with some kids swings off to the side. Bordering the back of the property is Esopus creek which is fun for kids and adults of all ages to explore. There are hiking trails leading across the creek but we didn't venture out that far.

The cabin we occupied (#6) was a two-bedroom cabin with a double bed and two twin beds. There was a wood-burning fire place but we didn't use it. Wood was provided. The small kitchen was fully stocked with utensils and cookware. Everything seemed pretty clean. This is a cabin folks so don't expect the level of cleanliness that you would expect at a hotel. However, for a cabin this one was fairly tidy. The linens and bath towels were freshly washed but we don't think the bath mat and hand towel were washed prior to our arrival. Also there were some unexpected items in our cabin that were nice additions. There was a pack-and-play which would probably be useful for those traveling with little tots and there was a portable fan which was nice to have in the bedroom at night. The only thing lacking was there were no small shampoo and conditioner bottles, but there was a small wrapped bar of soap.

There was a nice porch/deck on the cabin with a picnic table and I was pleased to find that a small grill, charcoal, lighter fluid and some wood for the campfire were all provided. Right off the porch was a stone fire pit with a couple of adirondack chairs. There were a couple of bag chairs provided too in case additional seating was needed. The picnic table and adirondack chairs have seen better days.

Overall we were pleased with our stay. We wanted a couple of days of relaxation and that's just what we got. Sitting by the campfire at dusk sipping on a few beers was priceless. We wouldn't hesitate to book another stay at this location and we're confident that it will be even better as the new owners make improvements. Also, while we didn't bring our kids this time, we are positive they would enjoy the place too.

Just returned from a weeks stay here with friends. Needed a bit of peace after a manic week in NYC. Lovely spot, peaceful and quiet. Great campfires and amazing stargazing. Went for a couple of hikes, well marked trails but a bit hot for mountain climbing! Nice little towns nearby but would suggest bringing most of the food you will need. Cabin reasonably well equipped, snug for 4 adults and not enough comfortable chairs. Cabins need a bit of TLC, and I think the new owners have a renovation plan. Brad (manager) could not have been more helpful, and great company! if you want a nice cabin in the woods experience, but not too far from everything, then this is your place.

I have been going here since I was a kid, always a great trip. New owners are making improvements while retaining the wilderness feel of the place. Attention hunters: come the fall make this a stop spotted big bucks up the back mountain and if you go for turkey, they are all over the clearings up the mountain. Leave the city attitudes behind and go up, have a beer and relax by the campfire!
