“Always a pleasant day”

Always go for Octoberfest when there are vendors, sometimes in between-love the zoo and the walk. It has a lot more to offer than we take advantage of (hiking, water craft, picknicking, historical sites, swimming, etc) so don't miss out just cause our favorite is the zoo.

“Large and mostly unspoiled”

It is probably the closest park to NYC where one can hike without hearing roar of highway noise. With connected Bear Mountain and Ramapo parks it is very large area to hike. The typical 2-3 hour hike would be from information center on Seven Lake drive uphill along the brook toward Pine Meadow Lake. For more serious hiking get a park map in the same information center when it is open in summer.

this place is beautiful to look at with the scenic mountains, you can ice skate and sled during the winter and swim during the summer. The restaurant is finally open so you can now enjoy lunch or dinner too!

“Views are worth the effort”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Hiked around hessian lake, and then took the Major Welch trail all the way up to the Perkin's tower, crossed over to the white appalachian tower and walked down back to the hessian lake. This route is about 3.6 miles and took about 3 hours via leisurely pace. I am not an experienced hiker and in average shape. Going up Major Welch trail is most challenging as it gets steep very fast with rocks replacing trails at certain points. Be careful of ice. Take your time and watch your step. Once by Perkin's tower, it would be a good idea to stop for pictures and for lunch. Stay well hydrated. Going back down from the tower via the appalachian trail is not challenging. It's rather easy and pleasurable. On my hike I found what appeared to be bear tracks so exercise due caution in bear country. We did not see any bears. We did see a whitetail dear. Great hike. Would love to do it again.

This is an absolutely beautiful park with something for everyone, just a short drive from NYC or suburbs. Don't miss the hike to the top of Bear Mountain!! Bring a sandwhich and a drink and prepare to enjoy the incredible view for a while
