Great well maintained trail network, with lots of lakes. There is generally a short steep climb when entering the park via the east end. After that, the terrain levels out with lots of options for additional climbs or hikes to beautiful lunch spots on a lake.

I have been going to Harriman for years. It is especially beautiful in the fall. The colors are amazing. It's hard to believe this vast park is so close to the city.

At just a little over one hour from New York City, this is a large and very beautiful park. There is abundant wildlife here including deer, turkey and yes bears. You probably won't encounter a bear but its an odd day when you don't run across several deer. The fall colors here rival Vermont and the view from the top of Perkins Drive is breathtaking. A word of warning, try to come on a weekday in the fall, but if you can't, it's worth the trip anyway.

Barely an hour away from New York City, Harriman State park offers excellent outdoors around the year. If you are into hiking and boating or other outdoorsy activities, this place is a must go. The best part of getting here is the accessibility - the 'Seven Lakes Drive' Road cuts through the park and gives a pretty good coverage of what the park has to offer, as the name suggests you get to pass through seven lakes along the Drive and hit multiple hiking trails as well - all in about 45 minutes from end to end before you reach Bear Mountain bridge. There are about 30 lakes and well over a couple of hundred miles of hiking trails within the Park with facilities for camping and fishing as well.

How long you spend in the park is up to you but you can definitely enjoy a lot even in a day trip to here.

Fall is probably the best time to be here (October 1st - 3rd week if you are keen on Foliage/ leaf peeping). This Park offers absolutely beautiful foliage views.. I drove for Six hours to see it in Stowe, Vermont a month ago which was totally worth it, but here was just as exciting with much less driving.
