“very disappointing”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

We used to take day trips to Bear Montain often, many years ago. When we heard that the Inn was recently renovated, we thought what a perfect way to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary - back to a place we always enjoyed. Our anniversary is July 4th. We understand that Bear Mountain is a State Park, but we never thought we would be stuck in the amount of traffic we were in. This led to our first negative experience because we were told that the parking lot was full - REALLY? - what about your overnight guests?! When we finally got the attention of one of the State Troopers blocking off the entrance and told them we were guests, they let us through. Checking in was another nightmare. About 2 weeks prior to our arrival, I had requested early checkin, was told they would try and get us our room as quickly as possible. The young girl checking us in had not knowledge of this request and of course, our room was NOT ready (this was about noon). I made a bit of a fuss. She disappeared for about 20 minutes. Upon her return, she looked at my husband and said: "may I help you?". My husband said you were checking on our room. She said oh yes, it's ready. YEAH! When we got to our room, the maid was just about leaving and made some rude comment about how the room was not supposed to be ready until 3:00pm! We reserved the King Suite, and though the room is big - separate LR and BR, it's lacking in amenities. For example, there are 2 TVs, but only ONE remote, the lighting is very poor, the air conditioning was hard to regulate, there wasn't any "hotel guide", and though there was a coffee maker, they supply you with grinds for a pot of at least 4 cups, yet the pot only brews ONE cup!!! REALLY? Also, if you are a tea drinker, well, you're out of luck. Let's fastforward to checking out. We were supposed to get the AAA rate. As a matter of fact, the young woman who had checked us in, took my husband's AAA card for proof. Well, you guessed it! - they were charging us the full rate!! It took about 15 minutes for the woman checking us out to make the correction - unbelievable! On a final note, the continental breakfast was awful - the danish were stale, the selections were minimal, and they did not offer any juice. We really wanted to love this place. We really wanted our 20th anniversary to be special. Unfortunately, the whole experience was terrible. By the way, we stayed at The Inn, not The Lodge.

Thank you so much for your review, and please accept our most sincere of apologies for your disappointing experience. The service you received is not at all what we expect of our team members, and we hope to have the opportunity to make this up to you.
Parking is sometimes a hurdle we face - Bear Mountain is a state park, and during summer weekends, and particularly holidays, it fills very quickly. We are always working with the State Park and Park Police to best mitigate issues like this for our overnight guests and we will continue to try to help improve their operations.
I have forwarded your comments directly to the management team, as many of these instances can be and must be fixed immediately. However, in order to best assist, I would like the opportunity to speak with you directly, and encourage you to contact me at your leisure.
Thank you so much for your feedback once again, and I am so sorry for your unacceptable stay.

All the Best!

We stayed one night, on a Monday. This was a tough review to write, because it's a nice place but in the end if they don't provide an environment that allows a decent night's sleep they have NOT done their job.

The good -- beautiful surroundings, on a Monday no crowds, very helpful staff, restaurant surprisingly good and reasonably priced.

Not so good -- restaurant closes at 5pm Mon- Tues so ordered out. No Internet in room despite promises. Bath drain plug didn't work. No restaurant in AM until 11.

The ugly -- air conditioning had no in room controls. Started up with a Loud bang, a snap and a growl every 20 min or so all night. Basically no sleep. A decent set of HVAC controls, including any of on/off, fan-on-full-time, a low fan speed, would have taken care of this. The control in the room had only a temp setting and an occupied/unoccupied switch, neither of which worked.

This hotel is owned by the ny state parks, and the rooms were recently renovated. The HVAC system and several other bits struck us as having been selected by lowest cost bid, without adequate care for basic requirements. The management seems to be in learning mode but they seem motivated. If they install proper HVAC controls at some point we would go back.

My husband and I traveled midweek with our three kids so we could tour West Point with our rising senior. We were so glad we booked Bear Mountain. The area is beautiful and the lodge was very nice. We stayed at the State Game Lodge in South Dakota several years ago and it remided us alot of that lodge. Our room was huge...2 double beds and a sofa sleeper. It was basically 2 distinct areas, but no door in between. Our room had a small fridge, microwave and even an Amish fireplace. The only drawback of the hotel was that the restaurants were not open so we had to drive across the Hudson for dinner. But, it was a nice, short 10 min drive. The complimentary continental breakfast also left a little to be desired, but we usually do not partake in free breakfasts so it was fine. My girls (15 & 12) asked if we could come back and spend more time there. We were very impressed and will definitely be back.

I just spent a one night stay at the inn, and was satisfied with the value using a promotional deal. Just a few things to mention, the Front desk seemed short staffed. The young lady did a very good job handling everything though! We had a few minor issues but she promptly fixed them. Now to the room, Please do not place guests in room 310 until the issue with the AC unit is fixed. I could not sleep at all with the unit cycling on and off every 10 minutes, I am very skeptical of a return stay even in another room due to this Major annoyance! Lastly, more towel hooks are also necessary.

Room Tip: Avoid room 310 at all costs.

Our room, a double-queen mini-suite, was very nice and quite reasonably priced. The Inn itself has been renovated and is sparkling inside. We enjoyed the hiking trails and the proximity to other attractions and shopping. Sunday was marred by the large number of day trippers from NYC on the grounds, but Monday and Tuesday were quiet and relaxing. We ate one meal in the Inn restaurant, and both the food and the service were acceptable. Now to the bad: The service, or lack of same, from the Inn staff, was remarkable. We had no maid service while we were there and there was no sign of any. When I reported this to the desk clerk and asked if we could have replacements for the in-room coffee service and toilet tissue we had used up he shrugged and suggested that I take it up with the desk clerk on the next shift (arriving 3 hours hence). This wasn't just one indifferent employee. Another person checked us in and didn't welcome us or offer assistance with our luggage -- "credit card and ID, please" was the extent of it. Neither did the person who checked us out engage in simple and expected pleasantries such as hoping that our stay was enjoyable. I got the feeling these guys and a gal were moonlighting from their regular jobs manning counters at the department of motor vehicles. Other issues include the lack of a view from the rooms, excessive litter on the grounds, no outdoor sitting area for hotel guests, and a continental breakfast on the second day that featured the leftover and very stale pastries from the previous morning. There is no obvious reason that the Bear Mountain Inn couldn't be a great destination but the hotel operator doesn't appear to care.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 305, which was nice except for lack of a view and absence of screens on the windows.

We were so happy to watch the restoration begin on what was once a glorious building and property.
We decided to stay and experience a memory from the past and were 100% disappointed.
The concern of safety was great. Not only are the elevators opened to the public which included some homeless folks it seems to be a great way for people using the grounds to find a bathroom other then the one provided by the lake.
Later in the evening we joked that we felt like we were in The Shining! Scary dark hallways and rooms scattered in an odd fashion. The lobby seems to be a flop house for people that have hung out at the lake for the day.
The fireplace area equally as disappointing. Huge groups of people that pulled several tables together sharing coffee while those of us paying a nice size room rate couldn't find a chair.
Sadly this place is far from together and the writing is on the wall.

Thank you so much for your candid response. We are appreciative of all feedback received. We are sincerely apologetic that we did not meet your expectations, and will continue to strive to offer the best possible services to all our guests.
I would be remiss if I didn't observe that Bear Mountain State Park is a public facility to be enjoyed by all. And the Inn, at its core, welcomes all - including those who have enjoyed the lake and park facilities for the day. While there is a fine-line between being a public facility, and offering exclusive services for our overnight guests, we attempt to walk it to the very best of our abilities.
We apologize that the fireplace room (now Restaurant 1915 and Blue Roof Tapas Bar) was not the experience you were anticipating. Many were eager to experience the room post-renovation, but we are confident now that renovations are fully complete (and all facilities open), that you would find the fireplace warm, inviting and a haven at any time of day.
Please accept our apologies for your disappointing stay. We hope we might have the opportunity to welcome you to the Inn in the future.

The architecture is grand and the location is beautiful but this historic lodge has some problems that take away from the pleasure of a visit. Our room was large and nicely appointed with a beautiful new bathroom. Some details still need to be addressed - hooks in the bathroom? Areas of the hotel have been nicely restored and there are many comfortable seating areas spread throughout. But the exterior needs the same level of attention - parking lot and sidewalks are crumbling. Repairs are being made to many outdoor areas but that now they are loud and impossible to use. Our room looked out over the garbage area, which might be kept cleaner given the dozens of vultures that flock there every morning. The Inn is full of promise - and we hope it lives up to its potential.

Thank you so much for your review of the Bear Mountain Inn. We appreciate all feedback. It is with great excitement that we report that New York State Parks was just awarded grant funds for the specific purpose of giving the Inn a facelift and manicuring of the landscaping, driveways and parking area. Timelines have not yet been set as to when this work might begin, but we are hopeful that this work will be complete soon - so the external façade looks just as beautiful as the internal improvements.

Thank you again for your response.
