We had a wonderful stay at the Swann Inn. It was great for a little weekend getaway to Beacon. Owner Neil picked us up from the train station and made us feel right at home. The house is charming and well decorated and our room was clean and comfortable. We stayed in the Green Room, and our bed was just right. [Based on a Sept 2010 review here, I'm guessing that we were the first guests to enjoy the new bed after an earlier guest had concerns about the older bed. Kudos to the owners to responding so quickly to the prior guest's comments]. Neil gave us some good advice about the area and was always ready to help. The breakfast was fresh, hearty and declicious, and was served in a pretty dining room with large bay windows.
We didn't have a car. The Inn is located about a ten minute walk from town and a five minute walk from hiking trails. The Dia is probably a 20-30 minute walk, and Neil was happy to give us a lift when he was heading out.
It was the perfect place for a last minute getaway from the city. As B&B travelers know, it is often the little things that make a difference. The warmth and friendliness of the owners, coupled with the charm of the house and a great breakfast, made the Swann Inn a great find for us.

We stayed here in early December whilst on a trip to Dia/out of town NY and thought the Swann Inn was lovely. A picturesque B&B with very warm and welcoming hosts, Neil and Darlene - nothing was too much trouble. A short walk to main street with a great selection of shops and restaurants. We stayed in the Red Room which was a lovely room, a home from home with comfortable beds, we wouldn't hesitate to return. Thanks again.

We just returned from a weekend trip to Beacon, NY and stayed at The Swan Inn. From our experience there, we can thoroughly recommend this Bed & Breakfast. The proprietors, Darlene & Neil were friendly and accommodating, even offering to pick us up from the train station, as we weren’t traveling via car.

The house is charming, and there is even a little garden to take a stroll through. We stayed in the front ground floor suite, which felt like a romantic time travel journey to a Victorian parlor. Although we were at the front of the house, it was very quiet and private. Everything was very clean and comfortable. The small en-suite bathroom (although still carrying an antique theme to its decor) was modern and the shower felt luxurious.

The breakfast was fabulous! In the sunny breakfast room, we were served fruit, coffee, juice, and Darlene’s delicious (and surprisingly healthy) oat bran pancakes filled with apples and cinnamon, and a sampling as well of her equally delicious spinach quiche.

Additionally, what distinguishes this B&B from the others is that staying there is a true Beacon experience, because Neil is the Director of the Bannerman Trust, which is preserving the fascinating legacy of the local Bannerman/Pollepel Island (you’ll find out about it on your visit). It sort of makes you feel like an “insider” to stay with this lovely couple, and makes for a memorable experience.

I know that I am not in the majority of reviewers here when I say that my husband and I were disappointed by Swann Inn.

The Pros:
Rooms and bathroom were very clean.

The location is great! The inn is a 5 minute drive from Main Street where we were able to grab coffee and visit a needed bike shop to fix our bikes, and a 15 minute drive from Boscobel in Garrison where we were seeing the Shakespeare festival.

The innkeepers were friendly. They told us when the bike shop closed, offered a tarp for our bikes in case it rained, and served yummy banana nut pancakes for breakfast.

The Cons:
We stayed in the Green Room (and perhaps the other rooms do not have this problem) and the bed was extremely uncomfortable. We sleep on a Full sized bed at home, so size was not the issue here. The bed frame itself was unstable and squeaky/noisy -- every time my husband or I rolled over, the whole bed shook and we woke the other person. And, the mattress was just uncomfortable. Neither of us got more than an hour's worth of sleep and forget about anything "romantic" occuring in a bed like that, especially when the walls of the room are thin and you can hear people running up and down the stairs outside of the room. I understand that the bed is 50 years old, which adds charm and character, but perhaps it needs some reinforcing and a new mattress?

Dear Guest,

We welcome our guest comments and work hard to accomidate their needs. The Monday after your stay, we took down my mother's bed and bought a sturdy Victorian style bed complete with a brand new queen size mattress and box spring. If we had known that you were uncomfortable with the bed,the night before, we would have given your our bedroom that we often book when we are busy.
We wish you the all the best.
Neil and Darlene,

My husband and I traveled to Beacon this past weekend for the first time as a guest instead of a resident. My husband rented an apartment on Main Street for years and we recently settled into a new apartment together in Manhattan. We had spent a lot of time in Beacon on the weekends exploring the community as well as the surrounding towns. I was first introduced to the Swann Inn last fall when some friends from out of town needed a place to stay for the weekend to attend our wedding in Cold Spring. I recommended the B&B and worked with the onwer Neil to make their reservations. He was very helpful and accommodating and they thoroughly enjoyed their stay. I remember them raving about the breakfast!
This past weekend we decided to spend the weekend in Beacon to get out of the city and we had tickets for the Hudson Vally Shakespeare Festival at Boscobel. Given the 2 night mimimum stay on weekends, we were lucky enough to book the Tranquility Suite room for only one night based on availability. Our room was ready early and we were able to check in and drop off our bags in the afternoon to continue on with our day.
The Tranquility Suite is a private room on the top floor with a queen size bed and in-room bathroom. This room is probably intended for guests who might be staying longer as there is also a small kitchen with stove, refrigarator and microwave. The room was perfectly comfortable and quiet and we slept well in what felt like a friend's guest bedroom.
Breakfast the next morning was plentiful and delicious with a lovely fresh fruit platter, orange maple french toast, coffee, tea, juice and mini cinnamon buns. We were stuffed by the end and definitely felt well taken care of by both Neil and Darlene. The Inn is conveniently located within walking distance of Mt. Beacon for a hike but would probably require a car ride from the Beacon train station. You could walk to Main Street but it would take at least 15-20 minutes from the house. Main Street has a lot to offer for an afternoon like the Artisan Wine Shop, homemade ice cream parlor, coffee shop, Mountain Tops hiking supply store, art galleries, Beacon Cycles bike shop, and small eateries. Since we have a car we spent a lot of time in Cold Spring as well, the next town over.
Overall the experience at The Swann Inn was very pleasant and I defintiely recommend it to future travelers visiting Beacon or Cold Spring.
