We went to the refurbished cafe/bar in the spa. The food was good, as was the service. What was off-putting were the 8 people in their 'robes' (aka dressing gowns). I don't know of any other cafe or bar, that is open to the public, where guests are allowed in wearing this sort of clothing. I appreciate that people having treatments would like to have lunch without getting changed, as happens in other spas. What is different here, is that Hartwell Spa cafe is a public area.

Shame, because the rest of Hartwell House is lovely.

Booked a one night stay at short notice for a treat for the wifes birthday. Only wish we had stayed longer or took advantage of going early and making a full day of this fabulous building and what it has to offer. It's great to see a building of this beauty being kept in such good condition. All the staff were excellent throughout our stay and we could not wish for a better experience. A special thanks to Cathy for the upgrade on the room which was fabulous. All in all we received a 5 star service and will return again.

My partner & I wanted a special place to stay for our wedding night & after much looking around & pre-viewing we booked Hartwell House for 2 nights.
We checked in (with friends) on the day before our wedding & the momment we booked in we were treated like royalty, our bags were taken to our room & refreshments sent up soon after. As it was a special occasion we booked the largest room in the Hotel & was not dissapointed, the views were fantastic & there was everything we could have wished for. After unpacking & sending my soon to be husband back home, my friend & I took a walk along to the swimming pool & enjoyed a relaxing swim, spa & sauna. A truly stunning place with lovely surroundings!
The following morning, breakfast was brought to us & although it looked lovely it was not to my taste ( I am very fussy).
The wedding preperations began & the staff were very helpful, showing haridressers, make up lady, flowers, photographers, family etc to our room, carrying & tending to all their needs as well as mine. A Very special extra mention must go to Henry as he was FANTASTIC! Once the weeding car pulled up, the staff all wished me luck & waved us off.
Returning at nearly midnight as a newly married couple, we were seen in by the night security man, who had a lovely chat with us, even as we sneaked back dowmstairs in our dressing gowns to have some 'fresh air' before going to bed.
On the second morning room service came with a suprise, they had managed to get hold of our wedding ribbon from our favours & decorated our tray with it. (we still dont know to this day how they managed to get this).
The bath was fantastic, sitting there with a coffee, looking over the land.
On check out the staff were lovely & again very helpful & bringing the car around to the door for us. they cannot be faulted.
We would love to return again but it is rather expensive, although worth every penny!

A little bit old fashioned in terms of decor for my tastes but that was clear in the website so I knew what to expect. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the spa treatment was fab, the pool area nice and the food good. All in all a nice break if a little pricey. We were given an upgrade to a huge room - a bit too big really for 2 people.

We went to the restaurant for a special meal, but were VERY disappointed. We had the 'Taster Menu' which was around £70 per head without drinks, but we expected that. The coures were quite small but the worst thing was that everything had been precooked and reheated. I had a dish of cooked beef - cooked, but cold - which had to be sent back. There wasn't one dish we could say was nice. Even the petit fours were over sweet, lacked flavour and were all different shapes of the same thing.

The staff are off hand and inattentive. We had to wait almost 30 mins after being seated in the lounge before we were offered a drink.

The setting is however, amazing. The house externally is really beautiful and is also very nice inside.

We won't be back.

We decided to go down to Oxford as we hadn’t been for years. Looked into which hotel to book but couldn’t decide, a friend then suggested Harwell House, he said it was just half an hour drive and he couldn’t recommend it enough, so we booked a room there. After a long day getting reacquainted with the sights in Oxford and dinner we drove to Hartwell House. As we arrived the sun was going down, so we didn’t see much, we stop the car in front of the main entrance and we were welcomed by a porter who carried our luggage, a lovely girl with a contagious smile checked us in and asked us if we wanted any refreshments to be sent to the room and informed us that we had been upgraded to one of the royal rooms. As we were escorted to our room in we had a chance to look at the interior of the house and to describe it, all I can say is WOW, it was absolutely magnificent . The room was beautiful and there was a tin with some biscuits (I guess they leave them with the turn down service) that were delicious. The room was decorated in a very traditional style matching the house itself and it felt absolutely luxurious. We were very tired, so we went to sleep. In the morning, in the light of day, we realised that the room was overlooking the front of the hotel, the grounds were absolutely stunning. We had breakfast in a room overlooking the grounds and paid our bill. Then we had a walk in the grounds and then went to the Spa, we used the swimming pool, relaxed in the sauna and the Jacuzzi, and then I was lucky enough to have a massage. We asked then if we could possibly be accommodated for lunch, so they took us to the Spa Cafe, a lovely room overlooking the swimming pool, and had a great lunch. We went then to pick up our luggage, put it in the car and unfortunately leave the hotel, but we left thinking this is a place we will definitely be coming back. The house is beautiful, but what set Hartwell House apart from other hotels, in our opinion, is the staff, everyone we found was really friendly and willing to help, always with a smile in their faces, the obviously enjoy working in such a beautiful place.

Hartwell is a magnificent country house hotel and a wonderful place to stay, but the restaurant is really poor. It's such a shame because the house deserves something so much better. What an opportunity for someone to take over the kitchen and turn into a top class operation. I know we are not on our own in this view.
I mean to post this review ages ago, but have been prompted to do it because Hartwell is promoting a summer offer at the moment.
