“Great for the money”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

I booked this hotel for Labor Day weekend to visit the NY State Fair. There are hotels closer to the fairgrounds, but Microtel was significantly cheaper with only a 10-minute drive to the fair, which was definitely worth it. I found no problem getting to other attractions in the area via car; downtown Syracuse was only 15 minutes away. The location is right near the highway which is very convenient.

PROS:
- We booked a queen bed room and it was spacious and comfortable for two adults.
- The bathroom is a great size and clean, although the towels are small (typical hotel fare).
- The window seat provides extra seating, storage, and gives a nice atmosphere to the room.
- Bedding was comfortable (no ugly "hotel" blankets!) and the room had plenty of electrical outlets. Free WiFi is a definite plus.
- Amenities we didn't use were: coin-operated laundry on the 2nd floor; 24-hour coffee available in the lobby; free computer terminals in the lobby.
- The hotel staff was courteous and friendly.

CONS:
- This is a pet-friendly hotel, which can be great if you have a pet, but be careful if you have pet allergies. When we checked in, a Pomeranian was scampering around the lobby & front desk, barking loudly. If you have severe pet allergies, don't assume animals are restricted to their hotel rooms; you might be safer booking somewhere else.
- The continental breakfast is sub-par: pre-packaged bagels and muffins, and all of the creamers for the coffee were spoiled. There is nowhere to sit for the breakfast; you have to go back to your room to eat.
- Only one ice machine in the building, at the front desk; we were on the second floor so it was a walk to get to the ice machine.
- The room had an old television with a fussy remote (the TV is atop the closet so you can't change channels from the set). It'd be nice if they update to flatscreens.
- There is no neighborhood atmosphere: it shares a parking lot with a bank and there are abandoned warehouses next door, which look scary at night.

It's not a 5-star hotel by any means, but it was a great stay for the price, and relatively close to everything we needed. If I were going to the fair I'd stay here again.

Room Tip: The hotel does have an elevator, so bringing luggage to the 2nd floor (or requiring wheelchair acces...

We arrived in August, at the height of summer heat and humidity. We got up to the room and it was stifling. The keep the air off to "save money."

I had a prepaid reservation through Hotels, com. I asked the clerk if they couldn't at least turn the air on for pre-paid rooms. "No" she said, it is too expensive.

So is this hotel at any price. With no air and a filthy room, you are better of sleeping outside.

Room Tip: There is no way to have a good stay here. Avoid it,

When making reservations the Gentleman (Joe) was outstanding as
a Customer Service rep. We were happy with our two night stay the
staff was kind and friendly and made our brief visit pleasant. The room was on the first floor and bed was comfortable and clean. Hot

From the outside it looks new, nice and affordable, BUT. The room (handicapped) was large, plane and would accommodate a wheelchair easily. The room was only so-so clean and had a lot of spiders. The bathroom was large, the shower too. But the shower curtain was too short, so the bathroom floor would get totally soaked and slippery when you showered, The TV was only a 19 in., above 6 ft. tall and the remote was non working except for on/off. The bed was just OK but the one chair included, was like sitting on a park bench. The worst thing about this place was the SMELL! It was so bad that after just a few minutes I went to talk to the man at the desk about a new room. He said he new of the smell (it was in the halls too) and it was just the new carpet that was put down in that room after they renovated because of a broken water pipe, over a year ago! I asked for a different room, but he said he was all booked up and he could not give me another one. I had to sleep with the window open and the AC on all night (it was a calm night) to make it bearable. It was my worst night in a hotel ever.
The price was OK IF, but being as far from anywhere as it is and the SMELL, I will look else were and spend a few more dollars to not have to smell #@$&. I will not return here!

I have been to other Microtels, that have a variety of food options for breakfast that aren't prepackaged. There is no seating for the patrons. You have to get your prepackaged muffins and coffee and bring it back to your room to have a table. Very inconvenient.

Stayed here early July 2012 on a long weekend (Canada Day). Rate was about $75 per night (avg). The single room we got was very small, but we spent most of our time outside anyway, so it wasn't really a big concern. We came to do some shopping in Syracuse and to visit some nearby state parks, so we were ok with simple accommodation. The staff were generally friendly with one notable exception (that person, who was working at reception, did not really seem to want to be there). In terms of location, it was about a 25 minute drive to Syracuse (Carousel/Destiny mall) and a similar distance to Green Lake State Park. The immediate surroundings of the hotel are not visually appealing - the hotel overlooks a large parking lot and a large abandoned building. It is in plain part of Baldwinsville. On the plus side, there are super markets and stores nearby.

Big drawbacks for us were: 1) continental breakfast has to be eaten standing up or at a small table with bar chairs. If you're there with a baby or toddler, breakfast is a real challenge. 2) there was sand or something similar in our bed. We let reception know but did not want to switch rooms, since we had unpacked, etc. The person at reception gave us sheets and we changed them ourselves (housekeeping was not in). 3) Walls are thin. We had trouble sleeping because we could hear someone having a phone conversation in the adjacent room.
