Shinde - Ker & Downey Botswana
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 2, 2013

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Shinde. The location is beautiful - under the trees, near a lagoon. The camp provides a combination of land & water activities - game drives, boat trips and mekoro.

As other reviews have explained, you are assigned a guide who organises all your activities. we had Bee who was excellent. We enjoyed a different activity each morning and afternoon.

Ker and Downey have a great formula. Everything works very well. We would definitely recommend Shinde to other travellers who are keen to experience the wonders of the Okavango Delta.

We had wonderful 5 days in Shinde and saw lots of animals. Our highlights were Baby-Hyenas and an elefant shaking the palmtree for the fruits in the sundown. The staff is very friendly and polite. We had the first days our personal guide, who made nearly everything possible (jumping out of the boot to see four male lions with the jeep). Also the time spent with the other guests during the common dinner, at the fireplace and during gamedrives was enjoyeable. The camp is really inside the wildlife with hippos passing during nighttime and elefants in front of the tent. Also the food was various and creative. As the landscape is extraordinary beautiful we took spectacular pictures of the many animals.

Shinde was simply sublime. From the moment our light plane touched down we felt very special for the next three days and nights. We knew we had come across a unique experience with Chenna's bright introduction. We left our activities to the recommendation of our guide "Bee" Binotswe who kept us enthralled as he took us on game drives and a successful fishing expedition. The morning mokoro expedition was idyllic punctuated by an elephant's antics collecting palm nuts on an island. Bee's passion and knowledge of the okavango was a highlight, we felt like family and that we belonged.. The "tents" are luxury, raised on polished teak floors and with all amenities . The beds were extremely comfortable with lovely little touches that were appreciated in winter nights such as the hot water bottles that appeared mysteriously when we returned after dinner. The sherry decanter set up as we returned to the tent was also a nice and welcome touch after an afternoon's game drive tracking for leopards.

The staff were all engaging from the management teams through to the support staff and the guides. I must make a special mention of Snookie who supervised meal time. With guests coming and going we were amazed that Snookie would welcome us by name.

The camp design fits within the mangosteen, marula and palm trees with lounges on timber platforms at different levels amongst interconnecting ramps. The fire pit is the heart of the camp with views across the plains and to the nearby lagoon.Guests would sit by the fire after dinner and reflect on the day's activities around the fire with managers and the guides, a lovely way to finish an enthralling day.

Our day would start with a tea and coffee brought to our tent and then breakfast. Morning tea would be served at a scenic spot during morning activities. We would return for a buffet lunch and then have a much needed siesta until afternoon tea. Sundowners of our choice would be served to complete the activity as we were one with the red African sunset in the tranquility of the delta. We would then steal ourselves for the fabulous evening meal courses before retiring to the fire pit and then to bed.

The hippos entertained us on our last night as their calls came from the lagoon and their munching around the camp. A real African experience.

An experience we will never forget. Thank you Ker and Downey and particularly the Shinde team.

We love the staff, food activities and total vibe of Shinde. Great managers and loved our tents. Our guide,Paul, specializes in family safaris was so great for us. He made bows and arrows with the kids, took us on boats, 4-wheel drive safaris, tracking leopard and watching hippos. Our stay was one of the highlights of our trip!

Exceptionally well-run safari camp -- the staff is friendly, flexible, and eager to make the safari experience an enjoyable one for the guests. Activities included morning and afternoon game drives as well as an afternoon mokoro ride. The food is good -- and plentiful! Many thanks to our guide, Adam, for providing us with such wonderful sightings. The Delta experience is so different than Chobe -- each is amazing, and we are so glad we did both.

Shinde is located in an idyllic setting and is very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and the food was good, but not outstanding. Our first guide did not really work out for various reasons, but management was quick to identify this and reassigned us to another guide. I skipped a game drive one afternoon but our second guide (OP) went out of his way to return to camp to collect me when they sighted three leopards. There were a couple of other really nice touches along the way, which made our stay more enjoyable. However, the camp was very busy while we were there, which is no fault of theirs, but undoubtedly detracted from our experience.
