Shinde - Ker & Downey Botswana

We love the staff, food activities and total vibe of Shinde. Great managers and loved our tents. Our guide,Paul, specializes in family safaris was so great for us. He made bows and arrows with the kids, took us on boats, 4-wheel drive safaris, tracking leopard and watching hippos. Our stay was one of the highlights of our trip!

Exceptionally well-run safari camp -- the staff is friendly, flexible, and eager to make the safari experience an enjoyable one for the guests. Activities included morning and afternoon game drives as well as an afternoon mokoro ride. The food is good -- and plentiful! Many thanks to our guide, Adam, for providing us with such wonderful sightings. The Delta experience is so different than Chobe -- each is amazing, and we are so glad we did both.

Shinde is located in an idyllic setting and is very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and the food was good, but not outstanding. Our first guide did not really work out for various reasons, but management was quick to identify this and reassigned us to another guide. I skipped a game drive one afternoon but our second guide (OP) went out of his way to return to camp to collect me when they sighted three leopards. There were a couple of other really nice touches along the way, which made our stay more enjoyable. However, the camp was very busy while we were there, which is no fault of theirs, but undoubtedly detracted from our experience.

The welcome, scenery, friendliness, location, staff, food and experience is just first rate. Our recent 3 night stay at the end of March 2013 was one of the highlights of our trip to Botswana, Victoria Falls and the Rovos Rail trip back to Pretoria.
Other recent reviews cover the experience very well in our opinion with the exception of the delta and its tranquil waterways. They are just as enjoyable/interesting. With a few other guests we also had a fun afternoon fishing (most had never fished before) managing to catch enough fish in the pure waters for the restaurant to cook beautifully for us that evening. Memorable.
Praise should also go out to the husband and wife management team who are so involved and so part of all the activities of the camp. They give the feel of being the perfect hosts. We loved it.
If you plan to stay in this part of the world there can be no better choice.

Shinde is situated on a private concession which means that there are no other lodges or camping sites for miles. When you stop to view animals you are often the only vehicle there. The lodge is in a clump of trees and in the dining and lounge areas you feel as if you are amongst the trees as they are built on high platforms with wooden walkways joining them. The accommodation is very comfortable and the cuisine is of a high quality. Activities include game viewing, boating in makoros and fishing. We saw two leopards very close up. They were on an anthill early one morning. Other guests had good lion sightings. One evening at "Four Pans" we saw abundant bird life. As well as seeing some very rare red shanks we saw:

many African skimmers
Wattled cranes
Day old plovers
fish eagles
spoonbills

How can you describe such places. The setting is fantastic, the accomodation is brilliant and the service is unbelievably good. The food is amazing. Once you are used to the animals wandering round the camp at night there is nothing to detract except that you have to leave. Make sure you have a very good insect repellant and then you will have no hastle. All the Ker & Downey lodges we stayed at will launder your clothes the same day and so you needn't carry many with you. The guides are excellent particularly Relax.
