“Wonderful exotic safari camp”
Reviewed November 15, 2011

My husband & I stayed at Shinde as our last camp on safari in Aug. 09 - can't believe I didn't review before now. We booked this camp through Kerr & Downey and were not disappointed. Our room was well appointed, quiet & private until an elephant showed up at our back door at 2 a.m. which was quite an adventure. The food was wonderful and we particularly enjoyed a surprise lunch under the trees at the end of one morning safari. Our guide Adam was simply the best - knowledgeable, friendly & fun. We saw lots of wildlife on morning, afternoon and night safaris and also enjoyed a walking and water trip. On our last night when we were the only travelers in camp and quite happy to make it a casual night, the staff arranged a candlelit dinner for us by the pool... really beyond our expectations! Wonderful adventure and we hope to go back to Shinde someday!

We have enjoyed two wonderful days at Shinde Island Camp after a week of tented safari. The luxurious tents and the friendly staff were a treat, nature and wildlife stunning. The visiting elephant Edgar kept us awake on night eating flowers from the roof of our tent, but then again where can you experience being so close to nature :-)

We stayed at Shinde for two nights in late August and loved it- especially the staff and our guide Relax. The wildlife was great but the food and the local staff was excellent. We had rare cheetah sighting with three cubs and large numbers of antelope, baboons, zebra and giraffe. We also had a very close elephant encounter stare down which was amazing. Check it out below. One of the attractions of Shinde is the opportunity to take a mokoro canoe safari. This was something completely different and was a beautiful experience with lots of birds, elephants in water and miniature frogs. I also recommend the speed boat trip to the bird sanctuary. Did I mention how great the food was and the beautiful local staff?

As first time visitors to Botswana, Shinde Camp wowed us with everything from food to service and wide variety of activities. Falie, Magda and their team made us feel very welcome and took great care of us from beginning to end.
We stayed in the Honeymoon chalet, which was spacious with a large bed and had several 'special touches' such as a tree in the bathroom and various books in the room about the local wildlife.
They offer more activities than your common game drive like fishing trips, mokoro rides and sunset cruises in the Delta. Our guide Bee really impressed us with his knowledge and experience!
The camp is 5 minutes from the airstrip which is very convenient and makes it less stressful when you have to catch your flight. It was too bad we only spent 2 nights, because we really wanted to spend more time in this wonderful camp.

Shinde was our 2nd camp on this first-ever trip to Botswana, & possibly our favourite, mainly because it was run so well by Magda & Fahlie. Every night they worked so hard to create a real dinner-party atmosphere in the stunning tented dining room with the amazing modern enormous chandelier overseeing us all. Unlike our other camps the food was served at table - not a buffet dinner - & there was a choice of delicious wines with lovely dessert wine to follow - & then more drinkies & chat round the camp fire for those so inclined. And although their tented rooms are quite elderly now by other standards, they were still supremely comfortable & fit-for-purpose. And the game drives gave us more than we could possibly have hoped for - with a first-class guide, Relax, who knew exactly where to position us for the best pix - the leopard & lioness there we will always remember, as also the marvellous boat trip which for bird-watchers like us was sublime. We were taken to a heronry breeding island where the sheer numbers of birds & fledglings was unimaginable. All in all a perfect stay & I cried when I left!

We stayed at Shinde at the end of our honeymoon. It was probably the camp we felt most at home, because of the great hosts Falie and Magda, and also because we had a great guide (Kione) who did not only have a lot of knowledge, but was also able to share it well (besides he had a great sense of humour). So we can highly recommend it, provided that you know what you are looking for.

People who want to go to Shinde only because they want to see a maximum number of animals may be disappointed - the camp is really in the middle of the wilderness, and wilderness is not Sea Word: you may be lucky or you may not be lucky to see animals. If, by contrast, you just would like to enjoy the feeling of being in the wild, and still enjoy a maximum of comfort, here you go.

I would also recommend it rather versus the end of the trip, not at the beginning - you may want to start with a more game reserve type of area, like Chobe, which has a maximum number of animals on a relatively small area. So you can take all your "must-have-animal-photos" there, and when you are in Shinde, you have the photos you wanted and can relax and concentrate on enjoying the little details and the atmosphere of being in Africa.

The camp is a Kerr & Downey camp and you can feel their strong influence - so if you have been to other Kerr & Downey Camps (like we were), you will recognize a lot of things - they seem to train people very thoroughly on how to greet guests, how to talk to guests, what to cook and how to cook it, etc., so it is pretty similar. In some cases, this may come across as a bit artificial and/or standardized, even though I believe that due to Falie and Magda being totally natural, you feel it less in Shinde than we did, for example, in Okuti.

To sum it up, we really enjoyed it and would go back again.
