Starting each game drive with a boat ride through the channels of the delta makes for a unique safari experience. Milly and Hamish, the lovely young couple that manage the camp, are enthusiastic and dedicated to their guests. They managed to insulate the rest of the guests from a small and rather loud tour group, which is a real tribute to their hosting skills. Madala K was a super guide and made his guests feel that he took a special interest in showing them as much as he could, driving for miles to get to the wild dog pups who had been sighted near Vumbura Plains. Do plan a visit here; it's a lovely setting with terrific game viewing and wonderful staff.

As others have mentioned, this is not the place to go if all you want is to spot the big five. The experience of the delta provides so much more than that. To get to the camp our land rover was driving through deep pools, before we transferred to a boat for the final approach to our island home. The welcome was so friendly and the managers Hamish and Milly encourage all the staff to interact with the guests. So they announce the menu as well as serving it and on Monday evenings the meal is held in the boma, with singing and dancing beforehand. The chef showed a great deal of imagination in producing African tapas, and at breakfast there was always freshly made pancakes, fresh fruit etc. once we had a surprise brunch served up in the bush and one evening a sundowner was enjoyed on a neighbouring island after our Mokoro canoe trp. We also had a speedboat ride through the meandering channels of the delta with a very informative guide. Our three game drives produced sightings of two lion prides, zebra, giraffe, elephants bathing in a waterhole and many antelope species, plus birds. Our one remaining wish was to see a leopard, but despite our guide,s superb tracking skills this was not to be.
It,s a wonderful place to stay, comfortable, large tents, friendly, efficient staff, good food and guides. It was a wonderful contrast to the dry environment of the Kalahari wher we had stayed before arriving here.

Permanent water with more than enough game. Tends to be more experienced safari goers who don't want the plush nonsense that operators Wilderness put into their Premier camps that seem designed to make Americans come to Africa without leaving Four Seasons on 57TH.

This is a wonderful little camp. The travel agent was very keen on securing this one so I even moved around my order of travel just to make it. It is romantically only accessible by boat and, after some of the other hot, dry camps, the lush greenery of the Okavango and papyrus reeds was beautiful. Luxury lovers, be warned, it is very much in the middle of the bush, has only six tents and certainly is a ‘classic camp’, with resultant more limited amenities and quality and variety of food and drink. The water-front tents are large and luxurious with outside fly-screened showers (possibly cold in the winter, but perfect for my super-hot visit). There is a great variety of wildlife, and although this was my fourth camp I had still had many new sightings. There is a particularly wide range of birds. Some of the staff were outstandingly friendly and competent, but our guide seemed to have a massive chip on his shoulder and particularly clashed with an (admittedly somewhat annoying) man in my group. I think for some people, there is definite use-by date in the service industry and it’s bad when it’s your guide as they are so essential to the safari experience. Nevertheless, this camp is still a great quintessential Botswana experience.

Room Tip: Some of the tents are quite some distance from the communal areas and you definitely need your night...

Thank you very much for the wonderful feedback you posted on Little Vumbura and that you thought it was a wonderful little camp. We are sorry to hear that the guide placed a damper on the safari experience. We really do understand the importance of a superior guiding experience as this is the main focus of the safari and a great deal of time is spent out on game drives. We would like to address the problem and would require the name of the guide so that we may look in to this. We sincerely apologise for any awkwardness this situation may have caused you whilst at the camp and trust that you ultimately had a very enjoyable trip to Botswana

Enthusiastic staff, good food, great cabins and very good wildlife, even wild dogs. Skip the canoe ride but game drives good, extra touches for guests all add upto a good time. Water based is nice, and an elephant that walks by as u are having a shower in your cabin

Loved getting to this camp by boat every day, dodging the hippo pods. We enjoyed the water experiences here--we did both a mokoro ride and a boat ride in addition to the game drives--and really loved the laid back environment. Unfortunately, the camp manager who was there our first night was about to leave for her break, and it showed. We had a blind stuck down in our tent and we were only able to get it fixed for our last afternoon there. Once the staff change occurred, we felt like the service was better (others who had arrived before us concurred.) A special lunch was set up for us in the bush prior to our flight out and we felt like a king and queen as we sipped our rose champagne. On game drives, we often drove quite a distance before coming across things, but still really enjoyed the highlights: seeing sable herds, watching spotted hyena pups, and a glimpse of a honey badger. This was the first camp we stayed at in Botswana and it was fabulous. I'd looked at the premier lodges and wasn't sure that they offered the level on intimacy that I wanted from a safari camp. This was the next down in terms of facilities and was excellent. It was small, friendly and fun. The tents were beautiful the communal areas were stunning. Plus the camp seemed to attract the odd elephant who liked to wander through, wow!

A lot of how you enjoy something like this depends on the staff as well as the travellers you meet and they were both incredible. Our guide Savara was exceptional! How he managed it I don't know but in 3 days we were lucky to see 3 different leopards and a pack of wild dogs, plus loads more. The guys at camp were so friendly and the quality of care, from being met with cool towels from every safari to the great smiles every time we walked past people, was stunning. Great little shop too!

This lifted the expectations I had which were high having done a huge amount of research on where to go and stay. My experience of 3 camps under the Wilderness Safari banner has set the standard for everyone else. I will look to them first when we go back to Africa.

Room Tip: All rooms look out across a marshy area that has animals just wandering by.
