Tau Pan Camp - Kwando Safaris
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 22, 2013

Along with Kwando's Lagoon Lodge (see separate reviwew) Tau Pan is the best lodge I've stayed in over 32 years of safaris in Africa. It is superbly situated on a ridge overlooking a permanent waterhole. From the deck of our luxurious tent, we saw a pride of seven lions visit the waterhole at dusk, a honey badger, jackals, gemsbok and clouds of sand-grouse. Despite the ever present wildlife and the evidence of nature red in tooth and claw (and often very close up) there is an amazing serenity and peace to the Central Kalahari which the beautifully-sited and constructed Tau Pan Lodge does nothing to disrupt. On the drives to the various pans in the desert - including a long but totally rewarding ten hour day trip to Deception Valley and back - we saw lots of wildlife and gained from the knowledge of Chris and PK - our guide and tracker. The real attraction of Tau Pan and the Kalahari is huge vistas, stunning desert scenery and the quality of the wildlife - Kalahari lions, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes, jackals, leopard tortoises, martial eagles, steenbok, gemsbok, springbok and much, much more. The camp was very well run with great accommodation, wonderful food and superb hospitality organized by Moses, the camp manager. He and the other staff made us feel part of a big family and made our stay absolutely memorable. Already working out when we can go again.

Tau Pan was our first safari camp. What a peaceful, beautiful place! The bungalows were large and comfy. I slept well except for one night when lions were very close and very noisy (not complaining, that's what we were there for). The staff was warm, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Loved the food and dining experience; we ate very well. Learned a lot on the game drives and really appreciated Vosco getting us to good game photo spots. I'd love to come back.

Tau Pan presented us with friendly knowledgeable guides who were willing to please. Delightful bush tea and sundowner with animals on view. Learned so much about the San bushman from our tracker- PK. Lucky the guide took us to see places that felt like we were in a lost horizon movie.
Visited there at end of March-2013 before we went on to Kwando Lagoon. Right off we had a lion resting in camp. The first night two lions roaring back and forth and found them later on in the day. So many animals- the great variety of antelope including the Orex were a treat. Watched a wildebeest left behind by his herd near a lonely tree. Lucky showed us at night the constellations in the sky. The feeling the Pan area gives you is remoteness and the land left dry by all the indicators of the pans. We did not feel this in any of our other two camps. Lion and birds came down to the watering pond in the evening. Want to go back.

Room Tip: Very serene. It felt as if you were the only ones for miles and miles around. Looking out on the va...

TAU PAN Camp Botswana tips the Kahalari desert offering a unique opportunity to experience fresh early morning drives glorious sunrises. The bungalows are huge, well appointed and the beds oh! so! comfortable. The indoor/outdoor shower adds 'bush' to the experience. The guides are articulate, knowledgable and sensitive to the needs of photographers. Sightings, this is always being in the right place at the right time ... and we drove to get there once alerted. The chef met a host of dietary requirements - IMPRESSIVE! No one went hungry. The staff could not do enough for us. Loved sitting on the veranda almost touching the game making their way to the local waterhole. I will return!

Room Tip: This is not necessary - all the bungalows are well positioned, private and spacious

Was in tau pan 2nd week of April and we had fantastic sightings and really enjoyed our stay.
Like other reviews I would say this is not really for first timers and it is a barren and sparse landscape with not huge amounts of game, BUT we had fantastic sightings of cheeta both in front if camp and at salt pan , lions drinking and fighting in front if camp, 2 quick sightings of leopard, as well as giraffe's play fighting and more.
Couldn't have asked for more
Camp well run, food lovely and staff great

We have been on safari quite often and go for the light, the skies, the sunsets etc and not for chasing the big five at an open Kruger Zoo. If you share our view of why you go to Africa you will enjoy this camp a lot. We drove 12hours one day - saw very few animals and yet had a very memorable experience.

We drove to Tau Pan Lodge in late December and we were exhilarated by the beauty of the landscape in early rain season. This is a part of the lost garden of Eden. If you go there by 4x4 - some 120 km of sand and mud road from Gatwe - you recognize how remote this place is and what effort it must have been to construct this beautiful hideaway in the middle of nowhere.

We celebrated new years eve with the staff and had a terrific party dancing around the fireplace. Gamewise it may be shy of the of the abundant wildlife of Okawango, but the beauty and serenity of this place is unique.

The San guides can show you amazing secrets about the Kalahari - don't miss the guided walks.
