A wonderful start to our Botswana experience

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 25, 2016
Our expectations were very high indeed but this beautiful lodge met them all. Amazing sightings of animals and birds was the foundation of this enhanced by outstanding guiding (from Metal). In the space of 26 hours, we saw all the Big Five, Food, staff and Management were all first-class

We stayed three nights at Savute. The room/chalet was spacious and comfortable and the staff very friendly and eager to please. We were assigned a guide (called Metal) who met us, took us on all the game drives, and escorted us to and from the main lodge after dark. The setting right by the water hole meant that there were always elephants and often other animals to watch. The water is pumped from underground and they use solar power and a generator to top up the power so we had plenty of hot water and electricity. We found the area around Savute rather arid and sparsely populated with animals, after having stayed near Kasane by the Chobe river, but we did see a reasonable number of animals, including many lions. The lodge is nicely appointed but somehow feels a little false, like an act for the tourists. The food was imaginative, but stay away from the beef, which is gristly, and the kudu, which is dry and tasteless.

Room tip: Check to see if your room is near or far from the main lodge if this concerns you.

Dear JanSNJ
Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your stay at Savute Safari Lodge. We appreciate the feedback and will address these matters accordingly with the team.
This year we have experienced very late rainfalls all over Botswana and the animals have had to move around to find water. However we have had plenty of rain in the last month and the water levels are slowly rising.
Thank you for choosing to stay with us.
Kind regards
The Desert and Delta Safaris Team

Our family recently visited Savute Safari Lodge in Botswana . To access the camp you have to be flown in by a small aircraft . This is daunting if you suffer from air sickness . I recommend you take dramamine or Sturgeron before flying . The camp is located along the Savute River which is currently dried up . There is a water hole in front of the lodge and many animals , most of which are elephants congregate here . The temperature at the camp was very hot ( Dec ) and the rooms were equipped with fans , the problem is that at night the generator gets turned off when everyone goes to bed , this means that the fans don't work. We were advised to close the sliding doors so this meant that the room was extremely hot with very little air moving through it . I would recommend going when it is not as hot , this will alleviate that problem . The staff at Savute were amazing and couldn't do enough for us . For game viewing our guide OBI was very accommodating and patient . We saw a lot of game even though we were restricted to traveling on the allocated roads , no off-roading allowed . If you are used to South African safaris where off roading is permitted then you will find this restricting . We were lucky to spot leopards , wild dogs , lions , cubs , cheetah and lots of elephants and great birds . The vehicles were well maintained and comfortable . The food was delicious and very filling . The laundry service was an added bonus. There is no wifi or cell service so it means that you are completely off the grid in terms of communications .

Room tip: All rooms have great views and are all private with no rooms facing them .

My visit to Savute Safari Lodge was one of the best travel experiences I have ever had. The staff were eager to please and they thought of absolutely everything, from start to finish. From the cute little personalized card that they left in your room upon arrival, welcoming you to the lodge. To ensuring you had the right cocktail for the "sundowner". My room was extremely comfortable and clean. Baba was my guide, and he truly was exceptional. The safety of the guests, along with the animals' safety was of utmost importance. He was extremely knowledgeable and during our first safari drive, we saw lions eating on a buffalo and drinking out of the watering hole, and a pack of wild dogs with pups. Baba was very friendly, had a great sense of humour, and always had a smile on his face.

We were welcomed at the airstrip by a member of staff. He provided us with water, and on arrival at the lodge we got provided with cold towels which was very refreshing. The lobby area was very comfortable and welcoming. The African themed ambiance got us excited for the days to come. They were continuously offering us drinks and snacks and no request was too large. The lodges slightly separated from each other with a deck view of the water holes for mainly elephants, although other animals came from time to time such as wild dogs, zebras, buffalo and impalas. The room was spacious and comfortable even for 3 people. They had a ceiling fan and 1 standing fan (we asked of a second one) because it was so warm. Mid afternoon after the morning safari it was extremely hot, which was a struggle with no AC but that was our only negative from the whole trip. The meals were delicious and varied every day. Any request was met! The most accommodating staff I've ever had, so attentive and friendly. They all knew you by first name. Chief was our tour guide and he was very knowledgable about both flora and fauna of the area! He could read the animals well and positioned the vehicle for the best photographs and visuals. He was always the first guide at the sighting and he was very enthusiastic and passionate about seeing the animals which got everyone in the van even more excited. I would recommend it highly!!!!
