“Charming Chobe Experience”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Muchenje Safari Lodge was our 3rd Lodge experience in Africa & is a cracker !
No1 is the people with Joy & Rob just the perfect hosts sharing their knowledge, life experiences & providing the most personal friendly service that is humanly possible.
The other manager Peter is a fabalous guy who was always there for us to provide information, guidance & a happy outlook every day. Lips , Jackson , Ocean, & Nic thanks guys for your care !
We soaked up the the atmosphere of very comfortable accommodation, beautiful open lodge facilities, open bar & most enjoyable was the 6.30pm gathering around the bar to share your days experiences with fellow guests & the hosts. drinks & nibbles a treat.
On day one we we treated to a suprise visitor by the pool in the form of an elephant & many babboons frequenting the pool. Never spare Rob had a stern word to our animal friends when we elected to enjoy some poolside time. My wife & I elected to chill on day two in the twlight & sat on the lower deck with our beverages & binoculars watching the local animals migrate to the water hole. Very special indeed !
The game park visits were brilliant with Chobe being elephant heaven.
The meals were buffet style & offered great variety for each day. If you like a cold beer Rob is the master of serving an icy beer on a hot day, Thanks Rob !!
We can recommend this location & have total praise for the entire team. One guide took us into his village to visit their living conditions & the medical centre...WOW amazing to share some time with such happy & cheerful people. Thanks Signet.
Thank you Rob & Joy for extending your beautiful hospitality to 2 Aussies who will cherish the memories for life. ( PS I will forward the sunset photos soon as possible)

The lodge is in a beautiful location a little way from Chobe National Park.
Our hosts Joy and Robert were lovely and the food was good.
However, personally I preferred the longer safaris (Chobe closes at 6.30 pm) of the camps in the Okavango. I also preferred the uncovered vehicles, as sitting in the back of the covered vehicle your view was not so good as you were high - near to the roof. Certainly not so good for my photographer husband who was photographing birds.
In Chobe the vehicles are not allowed to go off road so there is not the freedom we had had. Also, there seemed to be no limit to the number of vehicles, and certainly not when you were stationery, watching the wildlife. In the Okavango it is limited to three vehicles at one time - as a new one comes (if) one must leave. This is a criticism of Chobe though and not Muchenje Lodge. We did find however, that the guides were not as knowledgeable as those we had had in the Kwano Concession.
The individual lodges are extremely comfortable and have a lovely terrace where you can sit and watch the Chobe river and the vervet monkeys and baboons around the lodges.
We had a lovely day on the Chobi river, watching the many elephants and hippos, plus the myriad of wildlife on the river bank.
All in all this may have been better at the beginning of our trip as our expectations wouldn't have been so high. Logistically this wouldn't have been possible as we ended our trip with Waterberry Zambezi Lodge near Livingston.

Room Tip: The lodges 1 to 7 are in a much better position to watch sunsets than those numbered 8 upwards.

Our 3 night stay in late March at Muchenje was a wonderful experience. Not only did we see lots of wildlife but the staff could not have been more welcoming. Our hosts, Joy and Robert, were 2 of the nicest and most interesting people we have had the pleasure of meeting!! They really make the place extra special... the rest of the staff was great as well. From the welcoming smiles, cool towel, and cold drink the whole experience was most memorable. Other guests commented that it was the best of 8 lodges they had tried over the years. The boat safari was awesome; hundreds of elephants, a lot of them cavorting in the river...The 'sundowners' by the water, the enthusiastic guides, lively conversations over appetizers and drinks, delicious meals and impeccable individual lodgings were awesome! Mosquito nets, repellant and spray are provided although we only noticed a few mosquitos outside at night. Each chalet is serviced daily, robes provided. Bathrooms are lovely; the double sinks even have an elephant motif. The pool gets the occasional visit from a friendly elephant and there is a big fire pit for after dinner drinks and conversation, as well as a watering hole to watch.
What is really great is that Chobe is an unfenced park, so that you are seeing the animals in a more natural setting than the fenced game reserves. the entire experience was truly a pleasure.

Muchenje is just a couple of kms from the Chobe National Park. Each room is a thatched chalet with large comfortable bed. There is a verandah attached with stunning views over the Chobe river. You can see deer and elephants from there. the baboons will be round the corner somewhere.
There are safari activities from 5 am to dusk and beyond. You can tailor your trips to meet your needs- we asked for a trip to the Namibian border after seeing the local village and school. Lips was our very helpful and knowledgeable guide. All staff are very helpful and friendly.
The point of coming here is to see the animals -- if you want all the latest mod cons like television high speed wifi then it may not be for you.
The meals were ample but it was largely a set menu.
Assuming its the safaris you want then I dont think this place can be bettered.

We had a nice start to our venture into Botswana with the crossing from Zambia by small boat across the Zambezi where we were met the other side and taken to the lodge. The welcome was superb and before long we were out by land-rover looking at all the animals and birds everywhere.Back at Muchenje lodge the food was excellent and we were looked after so well by the staff and by Joy and Robert.Breakfast was a highlight with made to order eggs and omelettes. With the bar and food in ample supply we forgot our waist-lines for a while and enjoyed our stay more than we can say.Thank you everyone and a special word of thanks for our guide Nick.

We stayed here in early February and had a wonderful time. The accommodation is just lovely and the food is very good. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make you feel at home. We saw some superb wildlife, with more elephants in one day than we had seen in a whole holiday previously - mind blowing!!! Having a mixture of water based and land based safaris was just great. Thanks to our guide Kabelo, for being so informative and such good fun.
As the lodge is one of only two lodges on the west side of Chobe it means that you don't have as many vehicles on this side of the reserve which is lovely. Wish we going back tomorrow.
Enjoy!!

Room Tip: Room 8 has a great view of the flood plain.
