“Awesome Chilwero”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2012

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Chilwero. The room was beautiful, the food excellent, and the staff incredibly friendly. They all introduced themselves upon our arrival and used our names at every contact. The game viewing was absolutely fabulous. Although the guides cannot go off road in the Park, we saw incredible things. The viewing by boat was a huge highlight. The sunsets with elephants will stay in my memory forever! Mushe was a great guide. He was up to every challenge and taught us so much. I recommend the spa. I had a wonderful scrub with massage at an incredible price. Go to Chilwero! You will not regret it.

We had two great days here. The service was top notch, food very good, and the game viewing excellent. My biggest complaint had to do with our transfers to and from Livingstone. No one alerted us to the fact that the transfers were by van, then water, and finally open land rover. Also the timing of the transfers meant we lost two game viewing opportunities.

Room Tip: If walking is an issue, ask for a room close to the main building.

i can really recommend this lodge to anyone. Amazing accomodation, tremendous staff, (thank you Lesego) unbelievable food (thank you Phineas) and an exceptional guide (thank you Rodger). this lodge was impeccable. Our room at Chobe was very luxurious, with air conditioning, vanity and sitting areas, indoor/outdoor showers, mini-bar, etc. There is even a front deck overlooking the Chobe River. This camp has 15 rooms and they are individual buildings rather then tent buildings. There were Springbok and monkeys walking around the property and elephants just on the other side of the fence.

We arrived a bit early to the camp and since our room wasn't ready yet, we were treated to complimentary foot messages........really nice!!! After unpacking and high tea, we set out for our afternoon game drive. We were lucky because we saw a leopard which is really hard to find, and also saw many other animals.

After many game drives in a jeep, the boat safari was a great way to see the animals.......no bouncing around on the uneven roads, no dust and wonderful cooling breezes as you cruise around the river to get a better look. We saw many crocodiles, hippos, elephants, etc., etc.

We really enjoyed Chobe Chilwero.

The last stop on my safari was Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero in Botswana’s Chobe National Park. We were enchanted to be greeted with smiles and warm lavender towels by what appeared to be the entire staff of the property. We knew we had chosen the perfect destination to end our journey. The main lodge area is so warm and comfortable, with staff ready and waiting to grant any wish. The property was expansive and spectacular with baboons and other wildlife to be seen everywhere. On our first night we were treated to a performance by native musicians and dancers. We had such a blast singing and dancing with them that we asked them to return and entertain us another night during our stay. We had three meals a day plus afternoon snacks on property and the food was delicious. All of the rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated in local style. The beds were some of the most comfortable on which I have ever slept. The most unique feature of Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero is the evening game drive by boat. We did morning drives by Land Rover and evening boat drives on the river. Viewing wildlife on the river was amazing, particularly at sunset. We saw elephants and hippos crossing the river and numerous varied wildlife everywhere we turned. If your journey includes a stop in Botswana, I highly recommend Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero.

Everything at Chobe Chilwero is top notch – if you can find the lodge!

We were on a self-drive and the directions to get from Namibia seemed very straight-forward.
“Chobe Chilwero is just off the M10, signposted” Really, the most important thing to a traveller is a sign – just a small indication that one is on the right track can make or break an experience. We drove from Namibia through the National Park and expected to see our sign to Chilwero shortly after the park exit points. No sign was found. We kept driving looking for it, and ended up in town. We asked at a major lodge, and we were told to look for the Chilwero sign near the airport sign. Now tired, after 4 hours driving we became frustrated when we simply could not find the sign. We then asked at the park gates. They indicated that our world-class-resort could be found by turning left at the big tree a few hundred metres down the road. The road at the big tree was deep soft sand. We had signed not to take our rental car off-road. By this time we were angry, lost, frustrated and ready to book into a town hotel. We had wasted hours. We saw a local taxi and asked the driver if he had heard of Chilwero. He said to follow him down the sand track that really only looked safe to drive in a 4x4. We came to a fork in the track and the road looked perilous. Certainly frightening to be in the bush, on sand tracks and seemingly lost. We kept going at the insistence of the taxi we were following and eventually ended up at the back entrance of the lodge. A dirty, run-down horrible looking destination. The manager appeared and tried to reassure us that we were at the right place, but by this time we were beyond tired and frustrated. How can any establishment be so arrogant as to not have one sign from the main road? The road is not safe and most guests apparently fly into this destination, so are met at the airport. We would advise people to only arrive here by plane, it is not safe to drive, it is not signposted and the experience was hard to recover from.

Room Tip: Seriously - do not go by car.

Thank you very much for your valuable feedback.

While I trust that overall your stay at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero proved to be enjoyable, I was concerned to hear of your problems with finding the lodge. We always give very detailed driving directions to our guests on self-drive as our lodge, as you have pointed out, is not well sign posted. I am sorry if your travel agent in Australia did not pass this information to you. When it became clear to the lodge that your arrival was delayed, the lodge did try to contact you on the telephone number provided without any luck.

We are very sorry you found the lead up to your stay with us frustrating and we would like to apologise for the inconvenience. We will certainly look into a putting a sign post up to avoid similar incidents in the future; we deliberately have not put a sign up at the road since we normally like to ensure that we meet all vehicles at the road by prior arrangement to escort them safely to the lodge.

Thank you for staying with Sanctuary Retreats and we hope to see you in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Chobe Chilwero is WONDERFUL!!!! 5 Star Service! Gorgeous accomadations! Excellent staff! From the moment we were greeted at the door by our wonderful hostess named Brenda, we felt like we had just landed in paradise! Everyone was soooo friendly! They were so genuine in their efforts to please us and make sure that every request was accommodated. The safari's that we experienced on the river were by far the most spectacular of all our trip. Herds of elephants crossing the river with the babies being pushed along by their mothers is an indescribable experience that if possible you must witness in this lifetime! We Loved every second of our stay here and would HIGHLY recommend this lodge as a MUST visit destination. It was so fun!!! And, beautiful!!! And we absolutely LOVED the staff at Chobe Chilwero. We took our kids 13 and 16 and they both said it was the best vacation we have ever taken!!! The rooms are beautifully decorated and extremely well appointed with exceptional amenities! 5 STAR!!!

Room Tip: Every room is BEAUTIFUL!!! You cannot go wrong!
