A wonderful place with African feeling

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Nov 21, 2015
The Ghoha Hills lodge was the highlight of our trip to Botswana. Besides a wonderful view into the valley and the participation in excellent safaris the personal leading of the lodge by Abram and Nanette with their lovely staff made our stay to an outstanding experience. We had a pleasant home in the bush! The interior of Ghoha Hills was very tasteful.

We spent two nights in Ghoha Hills in October 2015 and from the first hour it was a very special experience. While we were being welcomed we saw elephants and kudus at the waterhole. The room was very comfortable and welcoming, (thank you Kay for the special message) the food was excellent, the hosts could not have done more to make us feel welcome. Abram anticipated our needs during the stay. We had wonderful drives with guide Bafana, who was himself quite surprised to turn a corner on the drive and see two male lions (one with a yellow mane, the second one huge with a striking black mane) sitting within 5 meters distance. Luckily he did not switch off the motor, one of the males made a lunge for us! We also stopped under a tree when Bafana thought he had seen a leopard tail. He was right - the leopard climbed down the tree to greet us. And how often can you experience a guide change a tire within 7 minutes? We loved our stay and if we are in the region, we will certainly stay here again. Thank you Abram and Nanette!

Room tip: all rooms are fantastic, wifi at the very comfortable lodge with super views

I had the pleasure of organizing another safari in Botswana for this past August/September. Last time I was here was in May 2014. Of all the places we stayed last year, this is one of the places I wanted to come back to the most. The location is beautiful, the wildlife viewing, even during the dry season, is great and everyone at camp has such great hospitality. This is a wonderful place to stay since you can visit nearby watering holes, make a day trip to the Savuti Marsh or just relax at camp and take in the spectacular view from the hilltop. The tents have also been improved since last time by adding a nice veranda so you can take in the overlook of the African plains from just outside your own room. The tents are spacious and the lounge area is very nicely laid out in different levels, so it never feels crowded even when many guests are there. The food was as delicious as I remembered and they cater to any dietary needs. They have comfortable, well-maintained game drive vehicles and their guides go out of their way to give guests a great safari experience. Like having a picnic lunch at a water hole, while watching elephants and other animals visit.

Room tip: The tents are spaced apart, so if you don't want a long walk to dining area, ask for a tent closer to the main lodge building.

What an exceptional experience!

We are South Africans and have toured Africa extensively, including Botswana.
At Ghoha Hills the terms meticulous organisation, are displayed at its fullest. Our three night stay proved to be a 6 star experience and by far the best in Botswana.
The lodge is located high on the Ghoha hills in the northern section of the park, with an awe inspiring view overlooking the whole Savuti. The waterhole at the foot of the hills hosts a steady stream of wild life such as elephant, buffalo, impala and warthog.
We found the staff well trained, courteous and effective. They gave attention to all our needs without great ado.
The game drives are well constructed and we enjoyed many exceptional sightings. A highlight was the sundowner: watching the sun set behind eight massive baobabs.
The accommodation in tents with built-in inner sections is spacious and tastefully designed with beautiful vistas through the large mesh windows. Here we could wake up and experience the real Africa in luxury!
The main lodge, built on several levels, as well as the interior décor and design, contribute to the overall atmosphere of the lodge: presenting Africa at its best in understated elegance. The dining as well as wine are excellent.
We found Abram a truly outstanding host, attending to each guest with gracious care. On the last evening before we left, he gave a presentation on the layout of the Savuti, some of its history and the game of Ghoha Hills - very enlightening.
Thank you Abram and staff for an unforgettable stay. We will be back!
