Review of Livingstone Trails

Livingstone Trails
Reviewed April 1, 2011

I was unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident (the driver fell asleep) in a Livingstone Trails tour bus. Accidents do happen, but their response was terrible. It was over 6 hours after the accident before any member of the company even tried to track the passengers from the accident, and even then, it was the understandably traumatised driver rather than a company representative who could do anything for them. Post accident, they have refused to communicate at all around hospital fees, etc. I would strongly recommend you avoid them.

The company doesn't care about customer, and if you complain, they might just hang up on you, like they did to me... money money money... so it really depends on the guide you travel with, the first one with had, David, was charming and was really doing the best he could possibly do to accommodate everyone. The second one, Sydney, was just a rough guy, a robot driving like madness. The equipment was poor and not looked after. They pretend it is budget, I would say it is high cost for us and good business for them.

Just come back from a 4 day safari in the Kruger Park with Livingstone Trails. We knew it was a budget safari and so didn't expect the luxury of a top price trip. But all the guides we had were excellent, friendly, helpful and flexible. We couldn't have seen more animals than we did even if we had paid luxury prices, saw the Big 5 three times over, and they were very knowledgeable and obviously interested in the environment and animals, they answered all questions that were thrown at them. The room we had at Timbavarti Safari Lodge was in need of some updating, but was clean, and although not a lot of choice at the evening buffet dinner, the food was well prepared and tasty. I would definitely book with this company again and have no hesitation in recommending them.

After doing a 3 day Kruger safari tour in December 2008 which we thought was amazing... loved Timbavati, saw the big 5, loved the sites we stopped off at en route like God's Window and The Three Rondavels, we decided to book ourselves on another tour last year. In September 2009 we did the 5 day Johannesburg to Victoria Falls tours which was equally impressive. Yeah the first day was heck of a long day - getting from Jo'berg to our lodgings in Botswana was one mean drive but we met some amazing people on our tour and were amazed by Zimbabwe. If you do get as far as Victoria Falls the 1-day white water rafting adventure is a must!

Traveled with LT over Christmas 2009. Family of two adults and one eleven year old daughter travelling to Chobe/Vic Falls, then another leg to Kruger. The distances we covered were quite large, requiring long drives and early mornings, but it was helped greatly by having good people looking after us .

We would like in particular to thank Andre who we travelled with the most and who had to get us to put up and pack up our tents and the camp sites. He was always very pleasant and patient, knowledgable and enjoyable company. Also an honourable mention for Dion and Elson - we only had them for the briefer Kruger leg, but again they were v. informative and great in terms of knowing about the animals, and how to spot them. Good company.
And the trip itself was great - we had a limited time and budget and it met our expectations very well. Over eleven days we camped where the elephants roamed, saw lion and leopard, rhino and calf, canoed with hippos and crocs (at a safe distance of course), had a great time at Vic Falls...all-in-all, the itinerary was accurate. Our eleven year old daughter came with us and also thoroughly enjoyed herself - despite early starts and long distances.
But - taking into account earlier blogs - you have to be prepared and flexible. Visas: check it all out yourself - your responsibility. Yes, some of the equipment was elderly, but (for us anyway) all quite serviceable. We had to do a few running repairs, but all part of the adventure. And yes the right guide does make all the difference. Possibly we were lucky, as all our guides were great.- bar one driver, which we have discussed with LT separately.

In our case everythying went to plan and we would recommend Livingston Tours for a budget option.
